    Re: Today's clean car

Oh! By the way! Whats the m.p.g. of those various vans? I'm guessing they're all very reliable and cheap to run and/or are there any geeky car types could tell me what is the best van (2nd hand!) re: m.p.g.

I was thinking of Merc Vito or Renault Traffic (as Vauxhall/Nissan one)

    Cheers!

My Scudo does about 40 mpg if that helps? It is the higher spec 2.0 16V JTD engine, so not the most frugal but powerful enough to tow two horses in a horsebox safely...

My Peugeot Expert HDi does between 39 & 42 m.p.g. according to the journey / terrain and how I drive it ( I clock then average out every tankful ). Avoid Vitos like the plague - the bodywork is not that clever and spares ( particularly engine & transmission parts ) need a mortgage.

What Hann, expect a poser in a 4x4 to get his 150 m.p.h. motorway tyres and alloy wheels all slutchy? From bitter experience I've concluded that the best technique in a narrow lane is to stay in the middle until the oncoming traffic has slowed almost to a halt, then pullover. If you pullover too soon, the oncoming driver sees that as a green light to coming barrelling throught at an unabated speed; hence 2 offside mirrors gone at £100 apiece ( without fitting charges - did that myself ).

Our Octavia was only properly clean on the day we bought it.

Whilst I'll give it a 'once over' & scrub all the brake-dust off the wheels, I won't spend hours 'detailing' it like some of the contributors to 'Briskoda' do.

Having said that, I'll vacuum it out each week & clean the windows, as I like it to be clean inside.
It could have a 'crust' on the exterior, but I don't sit out there.

My Land Rovers only ever got washed when it rained, barring a couple of wedding atttendances in the Discovery

On the flip-side, when we had the XKR it was polished..... by me too

Got home insurance with esure a few months ago and the other day received 12 vouchers to have a 'Level 3' car wash at an IMO car washing place, one a month. That means it'll be being washed roughly 11 more times this year than last! Bonus.

Yeah, this is exactly what happened, only, it wasn't just the mirror, it was half the front of the car, twice in 3 years! Similar level of tosserdom in a similar car

Never a problem with the locals, we slow down, push ourselves into the hedgerow and pass each other, ususally winding the window down asking: how is it going... To which the answer is: 'not so bad', or 'middling' or more ferquently these days: I wished it would bloody stop raining!

    Re: Today's clean car

My car had its first wash of the year when I lent it to my friend to go and see his mates in Wales. It came back looking like new and he had had one of my brake discs replaced and paid £50 towards the £130 bill (he refused to accept me refunding him). He also gave it a mini service. Hope he borrows it again because it needs a good vacuum inside and I reckon he's the man for the job!

Oh ekkk... brake discs replaced? I don't keep my car clean, however, it is always up to date on its services and mechanically sound! As we speak it has been serviced and is being given a new cam belt!

    Re: Today's clean car

Don't worry Hann, I have mine serviced every year and unfortunately have had to have loads of work done this year. I bought it second hand and some damage from the previous owner's crash came to light after two years of me having it. I used to share it with my friend and his girlfriend and then I bought them out when it became apparent that we both needed it more than one week in every two.

The disc was weird, just one had worn a lot and my friend noticed it when he was swapping my tyres around (I have winter wheels on the front in bad conditions but ordinary ones on the back and he was swapping them over for me). The mechanic that deals with my car couldn't see a reason why it had worn so much and has now given it the all clear. Got to get some clonky bit changed soon too...he did tell me what it was but I've forgotten. Thank god its economical fuel-wise because it certainly costs a lot to maintain!
