Don't apologise "tele" as I agree with everything you say. I was being a bit flippant with my example as all the caveats you mentioned applied to my run, steep rocky accents rough fields for the decents would just muck up the times.

From my race at the weekend, its interesting (and probably bleeding obvious) that GAP is at its worst on tricky descents. I don't like the new view of the route and profile by the way on strava

    Re: Strava: FRA club..

I thought I'd share these interesting comments I recieved after one of my rides last week. It kicked off after this gentleman recieved a notification from Strava that I'd just beaten one of his KOMs....

Hill reps with a good rest in between again? You use strava differently to 99% of the rest of us. Average 14.9mph? You should try going for a proper ride sometime. See how you fare. You’re obviously a fit fella. But no outstanding cyclist. Cheap KOM’s. No kudos.

    Apologies. 14.5

And that’s how everybody who looks at this sees it. Go well.
    So I responded...

Hi there, I'm a fellrunner. I'm currently an injured fell runner, hence using the bike so much recently for training. I'm also in a full time job, have kids and have to squeeze in training where I can. Normally after they've gone to bed, so I was out tonight, in the dark, with a headtorch. I don't have time to put in lots of miles like many others. I've always used hill reps for my running training, and it transfers well to the bike. It was great to discover Strava as it has kept me motivated this winter. It has been good fun. I don't see it is a problem that I use it differently to others. I'm sorry that you do. Each to their own. All the best, Alastair.

That’s bollocks. I took your castle KOM and you were out the very next day to get it, having ridden about ten miles. If the KOM’s weren’t important to you, then you wouldn’t record hill reps using strava. Like I say. Each to their own. Your 1/24 hill rep KOMs bear no credibility. So why bother? I work full time (shifts even). I have three children. It pisses me off to ride 60 miles and nail a good KOM to find some waster has sat at the bottom and chilled himself to a low HR and bagged it just because he wants the KOM. I see your KOM. I disregard it. As do all the other cyclists who rally against it then view the overall ride. Have ‘fun’.

If I wanted the KOM for Kirkstone Pass, then I could get it tomorrow. (I’m 4th). I could sit at the bottom and wait till everything was good and go nail it. But i don’t. I’ve been chipping away at it as part of a ride for months now. When I get it. And I will. It’ll be a KOM I ****ing earned. In keeping with the others in the top ten. Are you with me?
I spent some time down in London last year, for the Olympics. I took the bike and went riding in Surrey. I met people queuing at bottom of ‘climbs’ to try for the KOM. It was all a bit soulless. You are bringing that to Kendal. Nice one.

and get a proper bike light.
Or just stick to fell running

It just devalues Strava. That’s what i’m raging against.I’m tempted to ride in the same vein as you and take your KoMs apart piecemeal. But frankly i’ve better things to do.
Having had plenty of experience in dealing with idiots on the internet, I thought the best plan of action was just to ignore him. That took a lot of willpower!

24 hours later, and after a lot of supporting comments from people generally saying that he shouldn't be taking it all so seriously he actually came back and apologised which was good of him. So it all ended happily!

What amazed me is that someone can take so much offence to someone breaking a rule on Strava's use that they appear to have made up entirely themselves. I don't think there are many cyclist out there that go out and do hill reps.

I have been having a go at the Sandy Hays segment on Kinder. (for me breaking into the top 10 would be amazing) I most definitly take it handy on the decent to the start of the climb before having a blast at the segment. I done a local segment (hill climb) 9 times last Friday night, in preperation for helping out on a BG attempt this weekend.

That's a good one. Glad to hear he's apologised. Plenty of people go out for a run/ride and give it some on certain CRs/KOMs... that's half the fun of Strava.

What a brilliant idea Strava is! I only discovered it today, so went about uploading various decent runs and rides that I did towards the back end of last year before getting injured.

Ive managed to bag a few local KOM's, but I cant work out how you can check exactly which "mountains" you are a king (or queen of course) of.

If I go on "My profile" and then "KOM/CR" Im met with a generic list of every segment that I am part of, but cant find a "bragging rights" button to show me in black and white where Im the top dog - or is this just not possible.

There seems to be a few bloody rapid cyclists around my neck of the woods, recording some impressive times of the local hills. This summer I will be out claiming these hills as my own!

Great conditions tonight, I took over a minute off to jump 3 places to 7th, that is with a good rest before attacking the climb.

What a "waster" you are HHH! Hahaha that's made my night! Maybe you should invite him up to Alva next year and show him how much of a waster you are! Reckon some people need to get a grip!

It sounds like you are looking in the right spot. I've had a look and they are on there. It starts with your most recent ones.

I've been on a couple of months now and it has been a right hoot. Really motivating throughout the dark, cold months. I've been going out bagging KOMs instead of plugging away miserably on the turbo. Far preferable.
