After the Low Faggergill checkpoint, all the routes I've seen on the interweb follow the road past Whaw then the bridleway back to Great Punchard Gill. Is there any reason not to take the footpath direct to the main road from Low Faggergill, and then cut across country to pick up the bridleway higher up?
Its rough going on the moor above Whaw, much more prefferable to run up the road through the Hamlet. I always turn left where the roads meet, for about 50metres, to pick up the start of the Bridleway. I find its easier to keep moving this way, avoiding the path through the heather which I find hard going.

Id be quite happy to come for a trot round with you if you like, I have a lot of experience of the run, Punchard and the terrain above there, can be confusing if you aren't familiar with it, Ive known people with years of experience of the route, still get it wrong from time to time

Thanks for that. It's looking unlikely that I'll get another chance for a look before the event itself - where do all the free weekends go?! - so I'll just have to keep concentrating (we went wrong mainly because I assumed that we'd pick up the path just round the corner - didn't realise that there wasn't one!)

Managed a quick (slow) trot round on Sunday - much easier route finding when the paths aren't under snow! Have revised my target downwards though, rougher going than I'd expected - will be happy if I get in under 6 hours!

The rules say we have to take an OS map (1:50, 1:25, or 1 inch to the mile)!
Anyone know if a Harveys is acceptable, and if we can carry a photocopy or need the whole map?
I emailed the organisers but haven't heard anything.

Id imagine as long as the map your carrying covers the whole area they can't really object wether it is os or harveys
