Over the last couple of weeks I've been aware of multiple skeins of geese flying high overhead towards the south. Definite sign of winter approaching.

Also, this year in particular, the rowan berries have been magnificently abundant, and the hawthorns are equally laden with berries. Folklore would suggest we're in for a harsh winter - you heard it hear first

    Similar abundance in Derbyshire, Mossdog.

I was only looking at a wonderful crop of hedgerow Rosehips yesterday and am just waiting for the first frost before I pick them for syrup.

I hope you are right about a harsh winter as I don't recall many cold, crisp and blue sky days in the hills over the last couple of years.

Yes, I have noticed the rosehips, and in the past I have been known to simply pick a few and eat them there and then. Do they become sweeter after a frost?

I am told they do. I have never eaten them "raw" though.

Presumably you squeeze the seeds out and just chew on the flesh and skin. I'll be taking the dogs out shortly so might try one!

Apparently rose hip syrup is very rich in vitamin C. I've not made it for years. I might give it a go again - given the abundance in the hedgerows.

Goldcrest, flitting around the birch tree in my garden. It stayed long enough for me to dash into the other room to get my binoculars.

Great spot. A bonus of having coniferous woodland nearby.

Spotted a Red Kite on the hills outside Shap this afternoon, and a Heron at Eamont Bridge, just to the south of Penrith.

Rookie mistake. I keep my Carl Zeiss Soviet issue in the drawer with the tea towels.

Oh, and Gary the kung-fu fighting Wood Pigeon is now quite tame and will eat nuts that are thrown at him.
