Is a vet still 40+?

Yes and in the relays ladies must be 40+ to run in the vet's team.

I take it you can't have a mixed open team?

With only being a small club, we don't have enough ladies interested to make a ladies team and none of the ones that would run are vets.

Also will the fell ponies be allowed to field a team with not being affiliated?

Yes it has changed. There are now 3 classes:
Open - any first claim member of the club, male or female.
Ladies - any lady first claim member of the club.
Vets - any first claim member of the club over 40, male or female.

There were a few mixed teams in last years event. I think there was a last minute change as a lot of teams were entered and a lot of athletes withdrew from running.
I had a quick check of the results to confirm my suspicions.

For the record, whether there is a specific "mixed" category or not at the FRA's, a mixed relay team MUST of course be comprised of 6 men and 6 women.

To win a mixed prize then yes - a balanced team
BUT not just to run that is why it is OPEN not MIXED
Several clubs have a few ladies but not enough for a ladies team and not always enough for a mixed team . In most cases there will not be any undue advantage of a lady running with mostly men in an OPEN race, we statistically are slower on the whole, but it will give some a chance to run that otherwise might not get to run.
