    Everest Marathon

Will anybody be doing this race in 2007? Has anybody done this event before?

The Race Route must make it one of the highest mountin races in the world.

For those who are interested in long distance challenges, the eleven races reports make great reading. A bargain at £33!

I remember Jack Maitland winning it one year and didn't Mrs BillJ win the ladies race once?

Yes, Anne still holds the ladies record (5hours 16mins) and was 8th overall when we did it in 1997. If it had been a bit further she'd have overtaken the final couple of ghurkas who were ahead of her and who she was steadily reeling in.
I kept with her until the halfway point and then had to let her go and came in 37 minutes after her.
Hari Roka (professional Nepalese runner) won it that year, I think.
It was minus god-knows-how-much at the start and a blizzard - if that had been the weather the day before, the race would have started from a lower point, but since we had to get down they decided we might as well run down! It must have been tough for the leading runners breaking the trail in the fresh snow.
Then by the time you get down to Namche Bazaar, its warm(-ish), so you start in loads of gear and gradually strip off as you get down.

The race was great, but we found the 2-3 week trek to the start line very frustrating. In order to gain altitude slowly, each day as a group we would only trek a few miles up and then stop. Anne & I were fit and raring to go, and wanted to walk a bit further each day, then come back to the camp but we weren't allowed to because their insurance wouldn't cover it. So we did find that frustrating.

I would recommend it as an experience, though.

Kath Harvey of Hayfield from Pennine Running Club did the race and has written a great account of it, she also had an awesome run.

Luvshack may have some more details he can post here.

Kath is a long time member of Altrincham & District A.C. who she still runs for on the road and country.
She runs for Pennine on the fells.

    Re: Everest Marathon

I see from the website that the runners no longer do the 2-3 week trek to the start from Jiri that we did, due to political unrest in Nepal. A shame in a way - although the slow pace was frustrating, it was interesting to see the country we trekked through.
