    Big Stiff Toe (Halux Rigidus)

A grand name for an arthritic toe joint. I am nearing decision time with mine. Other than live with the pain, i could have the joint fused or scraped. The scraped option, (if no complications) seems to offer me the opportunity to be as active as now. Can anyone comment from personal experience or know someone who has had this problem. I am 46. Thanks

Both mine are knacked. My friendly surgeon says that if he does anything to them I can forget hill running! So, I'll live with the pain ta till I can take it no more then its onto the bike. I am 51.

FWIW, I have Hallux valgus (ie., crooked big toes and bunions) on both feet and the specialist I went to see pretty much warned me off the operation. He said 'if they are not causing you extreme discomfort, don't bother'.

But maybe the op for your particular condition is less full-on, I dunno...

This is what I suffer from due to OA in the first metatarsal jointon both feet but one side is worse. I have been seeing a consultant at Rochdale for about 5 years now, Mr Baxter Wilde, and he is excellent.

Had some injections into the joint with an artificial synovial fluid. His approach is to be as conservative as possible and then progress step by step. I thought that this time he might decide on the initial op which is to clean out the bone ridge that is actually stopping my toe bending, but he has given me another year.

He always manipulates my foot and reckons that keeping movement as long as possible is the best way forward. This bit is painful and the nurse nearly passed out last time, never mind me!

Going back in a week or so for some new orthotics. I get some pain but main problem is trying to get shoes on, have given up with wellies.

    Good luck.

I had this problem 25 years ago and had the big toe joint fused. I have been running fell races without a problem ever since. The operation is relatively quick to get over although you would have to put up with a pot on your foot for several weeks and no driving. Our club secretary had the same operation last year and he was back running in no time at all. There are nowadays several other options as mentioned but I think you may be simply putting off the inevitable. If you want to contact me I can give you the name of the surgeon who specialises .......

indeed, it's surely sensible to have it done at the start of the winter

Re: Big Stiff Toe (Halux Rigid

    Hey up ambush
I had a similar affliction on the top of my toe joint.

The surgeon cleaned it up and also removed a piece of bone, that had been floating about in there.

2 months later I managed a 40 mile challenge walk/run without any real problems.

I dont have the full 100% range of motion but its not far off. It feels slightly strange at first but the pain is infrequent and much more bearable.

The surgeon said the joint will probably need to be fused in the future. I will hold out as long as possible for that.

    Hope this helps.

    Good luck
