Ditto x2
Hello Sue - I've just finished reading the 'Ghost Runner' and have to say that it really, really moved me. In my opinion what happened to John Tarrant casts a long, guilty shadow over British sport.
For anybody who hasn't read the book, I highly recommend it. It is the story of John Tarrant of Salford Harriers who when asked if he had ever taken money for sport honestly revealled that as a not particularly good boxer he won £17 in prize money.
For being honest he was doomed. The book tells his story. It is a story of a working-class bloke in a fight that he couldn't win against a load of chinless toffs running British sport. As the ghost he gatecrashed races all over Britain (winning many of them) and in South Africa he contributed to the toppling of apartheid by running as the only white man in outlawed black races, a "ghost among ghosts" to quote the book.
John Tarrant was a real life hero and his story would make for an astonishing film.
