Run loads of ultras! Use vaseline on heels & toes & anywhere else that rubs. And if you get blisters consider going up half a size in shoes.

Surgical spirit has been mentioned to harden feet up - that it certainly does, I know of a guy who hardened his heals up too much and after a long day out in boots pulled his socks off and several layers of skin all came off in a oner from his heel. A nice heel print in skin !

I would suggest plenty of room in your shoes and vaseline your toes and heels.

Does anyone use a pumice stone on their feet? Or should I just leave old thickened skin where it is?

I use a "ped egg" to grate the tough bits off. Much more effective than pumice.

I file down the really thick stuff that forms under my big toes, to keep the skin flexible. It seems to reduce the chances of a deep blister. I don't use pumice though - you can get proper files for this from the chemist that are easier to use & more effective.

Maybe I should invest in an industrial sander!

Yes, file it off. I use vaseline for races although have been using that bodyglide recently and seems ok. But I rarely get blister nowadays (probably get one on saturday at 3 peaks now I've said that!) so hard to say. But not vaseline in desert / sandy conditions. In the MDS I used johnsons baby powder. I had no blisters my second MDS - which is unusual. (My feet were macerated on my first MDS which was a painful lesson)

Lanisoh cream works well for me on any potential or starting hotspots.
