Amy - I reckon your best bet would be to aim for this superb event:

    http://www.tideswellmvc.co.uk/peakers-stroll/

    first Sunday in July
    similar area
    23 Miles
    no time pressure
(they do welcome runners, not just walkers)

oh, and as a "stepping stone" fell race, do Kinder Downfall in April...
Scramble the rock face through the glare of morning sun — to run

also go to edale and run first half to mam nick to check your time against the cut off. if you can do this easily and you have running still in your legs you should be strong enough. not much point entering if you can't??

I'd agree with this advice. I wanted to run the route but not race and used the Mam nick cut off point as a guideline as this was my longest run to date. first attempt I got to mam nick in 2:25. when I ran the full route I did 4:20. I definitely slowed on 2nd half but with long training runs in my legs it was good to know what my time at mam nick was going to be....I reckoned on double the time and was chuffed with the actual time

Thanks all. Have got married and had a very lazy, over-eaty honeymoon since posting, so need to get back out and regain some lost fitness first (whoops!). Brilliant bits of advice and ideas for routes too. What lovely folk you are

This looks very appealing. Any idea where/when I can find an entry form and a date?

I was going to suggest the KD. It really is a Peak District classic.
    For details-
http://www.cs.man.ac.uk/~temples/hc/ on the FRA site http://www.fellrunner.org.uk/races.php or if you join the FRA it will be in the handbook & Fixtures Calender. It is well worth joining the FRA .

I am guessing the final dates and details will be posted in the new year.

Here is an account of my first Skyline http://sbrtrfr.blogspot.co.uk/2011/03/rescue-me.html

Thanks for the blog post - pictures are fab and led to 20 minutes of poking around various accounts of the two races (imagine if I used all my noodling-about-on-the-internet time for running. Heck.)
