Wasn't Road Tax abolished in 1937?

Don't we (car owners) pay Vehicle Excise Duty? Although I can't really think of a good reason not to replace it with extra fuel tax.

Abolish VED, increase tax on fuel - most will agree this is a good idea - but the PM who institutes it will forever be the person who massively increased the price of petrol/diesel.

That's the problem. Simplifying the tax system doesn't ever come to the top of the "to do" list and it doesn't win votes. If anything, most minor changes that would benefit 99% of people would also hit adversely affect 1%. And most politicians are canny enough to realise that there's the potential for lots of people feeling sorry for that 1% and blaming the politicians for meddling.

There is a section of society that believes money is the root of all evil, except government money which is the antidote. If you got into a conversation with them about the merits of the NHS for instance they'll tell you that without it the poor would die in the alleys and gutters of the cities and the elderly will decay into their floorboards. Point out to them that the majority of visitors to surgeries and hospitals today are dissatisfied with the care they or their families have received and you get that look that "oohhh you can't say that about the NHS." Oh and these same people are quick to buy private medical insurance. Of course they buy it to save the NHS for those who really need it. Yes that old chestnut.

The truth is the NHS has been well financed for years. Tony Blair certainly didn't short change it during his stay. Yet the more money they seem to spend on it the worse things seem to become. It's a similar story with education. Youngsters spending over a decade in state schools and they come out barely able to think let alone read or write.

There's a good reason for the above. Thinking individuals would not consider the Tories 'scum' and Corbyn 'God.' They'd be able to see through the santa image and see him for what he really is - a danger to freedom. Indoctrinate kids in the power of the state from an early age and all but the strongest will succumb to the socialite vision. Think you're an exception to this indoctrination? Think about your beliefs in regard to the merits of the state then think again.

Think people are chosen to be trained as Doctors based on merit? No chance! If you don't demonstrate your socialist conformity you'll never get a training place. Speak up for the virtues of private medicine and your chance to become a Doctor is doomed, Einstein or not.

This is why I'm all for tax avoidance even though it's unfair on the poorer people: Less money for the state to waste. Enough said.

You love it on here Graham. Anyway I was just setting the progressives like Noel and Mike-T straight on a few things. Can't have them smuggling their anti capitalist ideas into the arena.

Absolutely. There's a lot to be said for benevolent dictatorship by the captains of industry who generate the wealth etc etc.
