It was a bit battered and curling up at the edges, just like me.

Talking of sandwiches, I had the tuna sandwich from the New Bridge checkpoint on Sunday for breakfast. I really needed it then; it went down a treat.
I've just uploaded a few piccies, though not many due to pushing so hard for a fast time.
I thought I was brave eating my marmote sandwich on the way homer- by Sunday I'd have binned it!
Odd how the legs were not affected - eiter we were not running hard enough or it was just tough and slow
If I do it next year I am going to investigate an alternative to the tarmac- it was sort of easy but... not sure about your route Nick , I had wondered about a lower route on paths without the climb.
Glad you made it round Nick and sorry to have disappeared before I got chace to chat to some of you but Iknew I had to get back before I was sleepy. Had intended to come out and help you and karen with flags but... I'll explain next time
Marmot sandwich Karen? Steady on there. Should have stuck to Welsh Rabbit or Ratatouille surely...
Oh Splatcher you tease! I did titter meself, like.
Karen, interesting what you say about no leg soreness. It's because you fuelled well throughout, which also enabled you to do a fast time. I have found that if I run on insufficient fuelling or hydration, my legs get trashed very quickly, which can take a few days to recover from with worse DOMS. On top of that is a much slower time and much more self pity along the way. I have finished a well fuelled 100-miler (Western States) faster, feeling fitter and with fewer after-effects than much shorter races where fuelling went awry. From that evidence I have to assume that, in the absence of sufficient fuel, the body starts to eat itself, but I'm surprised that it would start on the leg muscles.
Ha Ha Andy- spelling (or typing was never my strong point)
Some might say marmots would taste better than marmite but I carried as I usually crave something savoury.
sounds like a good time by all. i missed out, as was feeling carp, so decided to stay nearer home and try to defend my Caythorpe Canter trail marathon title (3rd)
But I will be following you all next year now you've sussed the route nicely :sneaky:
twinkletoes, you are a very bad girl for running with a virus. tsk. might do your heart in. :)
Looking FW to seeing the results. Dunno how the eck I got sub6 last year. Did Brenno do it? I now realise he was joint? 2nd at the Canter 2010 with my m8 (who is same speed as me) the one year I missed it. We would have had another good tussle.
Had to miss the Hike as I thought it would be a really good idea to do the Edale Skyline with man-flu, which totally wiped me out until this week. Did the Caythorpe Canter in 2010 as prep for the Old County Tops and the Lakeland 50 - was the only one carrying a full pack with wet weather gear, food and water. Was also the furthest I had run at that point, enjoyed it though as the weather was very nice. Think I just snuck in ahead of your mate (was from a tri club?) although he was catching very quickly as I was ruined.
bad luck brenno. being a first timer, and the navig not being idiot proof, i assumed you had run in together for the last part. so my numpT tri m8 was third then the lying g1t :p
i reckon you just sit and watch this forum all day until i mention you. i was interested in your and TToes times as it would have been a gauge of my own, had i bothered to turn up.
Results up........... http://www.calderdalehike.org.uk/results/2012.html
Thanks Steve, good call. I can finish me blog report now.

Hope that helps mate.
That's the one said cheers steve spot on i'll send him it .
Mark, as far as I can tell so far they are, but they have been known to make mistakes....
old un, call me slow but I've been racking my brains for months trying to recall who you were. I would never have guessed you were he and he was you. You learn something every day (and in my case forget it the next). :o
i am that man indeed nick :Dit has been a few years between since we last run together( snowdon marathon or rotherham again i think ?) and rotherham when we reaqainted last year, just glad i didnt owe you any money........ we can have a good chat on fellsman no doubt
Seriously looking at the map here... Marked the checkpoints for the 37 mile route according to the website, but there seems to be a dazzling array of route choices.
Looks like the potential's there to go well and truly wrong:o
I'll probably just take the plunge and keep an eye on the map and who's in front of me....and there'll be plenty of those!
I'll trawl through the old posts to aid map marking and route choices.... Taking into account the fact the route alters...
Who else is likely to be there?
Well I will be, & a good few others from the forum I imagine. The route changes every 3 years I think, & there was a new route last year. Navigation around Calderdale's always an intereseting challenge. I was injured & missed it last year, but I think a lot of it is the Haworth Hobble in reverse. I must have a look at the map myself now it's the next running event on my horizon. See you there Simon - maybe I'll even work out who you are & say hi!
I've just been having a look at the route on the map. There are a good few route choices, but I suspect for most of them it won't make much difference which you take, as long as don't get lost.
Start to Nab End. Looks clear enough, along Moor Bottom Lane.
Nab End to Erringden Grange. Minor path choices, but essentially as close to a beeline as the fps let you.
Erringden Grange to Stoodley Pike. Obvious route.
Stoodley Pike to Lumbutts. Down path SW to join London Road.
Lumbutts to Cross Stone. Aim for canal bridge at 951244, either on road or fp. I'll probably take the fp to avoid climbing the road hill. Follow someone who know the Hobble route up to the golf club! It's not obvious.
Cross Stone to Mount Cross. Along track & join Calderdale Way. Keep right on main track when CW goes left.
Mount Cross to Hoof Stones. Road to county boundary bridge 913282, then path to trig point.
Hoof Stones to Widdop. This is the one where choice of route may make quite a difference. The only way I already know is north on wet ground along the boundary on a trod. Join the Gorple Gate track down to the CP. But, would a beeline via Wicken Clough & the Gorple Upper dam be faster? I've no idea.
Widdop to Top Withens. Obvious route. The only choice is which side of the lower reservoir to go. Unfortunately the NW (road) option is probably slightly quicker, though I probably won't take it myself.
Top Withens to Tom Stell's Seat. There are a few options, but they all appear to be about the same distance & the same amount of climbing (ie not much).
Tom Stell's Seat to Grain Water Bridge. Obvious route via SE corner of Leeshaw Reservoir.
Grain Water Bridge to New Bridge. Route obvious. Don't miss the path down through the wood to your left as you near the car park at the end of this section.
New Bridge to Delf End. Up path by the toilets to Pecket Well. Up track from 997295 or 997296.
Delf End to Jerusalem Farm. There are a few options, all looking the same distance. I'm tempted by the lower option after my time in the snow at the weekend! That's via Low Bridge, Catherine House, Spa Wood.
The rest's on road, unfortunately.
What we need is some spring weather for this one!
Thanks for that Andy. I don't know the area at all well, hence the apprehension....but shall mark up the map and hope for the best. See you on the day:D
I did it last year and got a shock when I realised the route had changed. managed to hang on and find others who had some idea plus a bit of map reading too. Had hope to do a rcee last Sunday but decided too much snow and stayed more local. Might get a bit of a recee early in easter hols if snow gets less
people went more than one way from E Grange to S Pike last year! (on the first bit and then all met on London road)
It was on moor towards end before dropping to villages and main road that was trickiest I think
I knew you were Steve, but I am not likely to see very much of you unless you hang around at the end:o
Looking forward to it the more I think about. Just want this chuffin' ice and snow to go....right, back to the map. Hope the prep's going well mate.
is there closing date for entry as i cant commit until after 7 th lots of hill and speed work before then but i would like to do long route
thanks DT just checked its 9th so i will be booking later thats as long as i hav,nt been eaten by the peat bogs on the allendale or marsh down sour milk
DT...put me out of my misery... Who is the face of the new avatar?
Vaguely familiar, but I've not got it.....
Looked up old Sal... Hope you have more luck than he did!
Can't really see the likeness myself, but as you say, maybe it was a while ago.;)
don't supose anyone is planning a recee of part of this either tomorrow or Thursday? Although I ran it last year there are bits that I really cannot remember- probably because I followed and prayed.
was thinking park in Tod. and join route up above cross stone somewhere. was wondering about checking out route near Gorple Res? then after Widdop short cut back to New Bridge as we know the bit out to Withens from Hobble. Pick up route again at New Bridge thru to Luddenden foot. Ideally up to start but could always short cut to Nab End then want to try Nab End to Erringden as I am sure people went lots of ways there last year. then either over Stoodley or not and back to car.
Sounds a good plan. Where in Tod? The market car parks aren't free, but there are a couple that are just up the Burnley road: Dalton St & Stansfield Rd - according to the www. No idea whether there'll be space in them, but there are residential streets around there anyway. How about meeting by the railway bridge by the market, on Burnley Road? Name your time & I'll see you there. I'll have Merlin with me.
pm'd you
how about 9.30? I can look up those car parks you suggest or try to leisure centre near High School (where relay change over is)
