Thought Wharfeego was back for a mo:)
Well done Wharfedale, saw Ted Mason on leg 1 with a smile on his face, usually a mask of sheer determination, mind you he was going downhill;)

SALFORD SALFORD SALFORD
After years of trying, after years of getting lost, after years of the team falling apart on the eve of the event, today we pulled it off!!! Well done to all 12 of the team and the B team who would have been used if problems happened. Wet conditions under foot made some sections interesting. I am really pleased we have finally managed to win this event. Thanks to all the organisers and the marshalls on route. Sorry I couldn't stay longer at the presentation but had to get back to sort things out.
Good effort to you Andi and your team;)
Well done Salford, Dark Peak Bridesmaids again:(
The Dark Peaks vets were 14th or 15th overall + 2nd Vets I think. Superb conditions if a little damp under foot. could have done with a bit of fog;)
Merry was that you that said hi as I "ran" up the last climb of leg 4, I was in griting my teeth going up there and wasn't seeing too clearly.:o
It was good fun though and one of the best social runs of the year.
A bit dissappointing to see this thread has dried up already...a bit like the weather yesterday.
No contoversy this year???
I agree with you totally Andy........The event and the organisation of the day was superb, as it always is. But it's a pity the presentation hadn't happened earlier.
Most of our team had had to go too. My wife and I had to leave before our little one suffered a complete meltdown. A real shame as I'd run an early leg then gone home and we all travelled back over to Mytholmroyd specially for the presentation.
Despite that ......thanks again to ALL. I'm also really impressed with the Stoodly Pike Memento:)
Ok Controversey possibly.
Does it not say in the rules that competiters running together need to stay together.
rule i) Each pair of runners must stay together at all times.
I was at a couple of change overs where runners were out of sight of their respective partners in excess of 100m. This is has to not only dodgy if your partner falls etc but perhaps more importantly the relays are a team race, there is no team work in leaving your partner, if my partner had left me i would be very p!ssed off. Those runners should ashamed if not disqualfied!.:(
Controversial enough. discuss...
We had a chat about this in the car on the way back.
If you are the stronger of the pair it is your duty and responsibility to get the best you possibly can out of your partner - that is your job!
You do not run off the front to prove how much faster you are than your partner - you can prove this at the local X-C League or 10k or whatever.
If you get more than say, 10 or 15m ahead of your partner, he/she is liable to think 'fvck you' and slow up even more.
I have been both the weaker and stronger half of a pair in the last couple of years but on both ocasions we ran as a team and did the fastest time we could as a team.
I seemed to spend the whole of Leg 6 about 4 or 5 metres behind my speedy partner, but fortunately I was also 3 or 4 metres behind the lovely Bingley duo of Natalie & Victoria so that encouraged me to keep going faster than I usually would have done!!
Totally agree, I saw one pair who might as well run as individuals, the first lad was well away and paying no attention whatsoever to his "team mate". He did eventaully wait for a good long time at a gate but I think the damage was done. His partner looked in bits!
Incidentally, where's the thread describing in detail how Marvin managed to drop our baton and didn't notice until he'd run another 3/4 mile, thus having to go back to for it? I can't find it anywhere.
One guy was doing a grand job of encouraging his slower partner up West Lane on leg six. By running backwards in front of him.
Thank god my partner waited for me, I was in bits yesterday. Think I left my legs in the car back in Leeds. She literally pushed me up the hills most of the time and they weren't even that steep...shocking performance by me but awesome team work from my partner, couldn't have asked for more support. would never have made it round without her...!!
Had a Great day yesterday, although now i'm suffering with a cold. Does anyone have any full results yet, or happen to know how the 'Mighty Sale Harriers' did on their debut? We had 2 teams in it, a mixed and a mens team. Thanks.
I have experienced this both ways. Two years ago I ran with a faster partner -- who was also a mate -- and had a miserable day. He ran his own pace, didn't look over his shoulder, and simply stopped and waited 50 yards from the finish of the leg so we could run in together for the handover. It almost put me off Calderdale for good (or at least off running as a pair ever again) and was so disspiriting that I actually walked up one hill...the only time I can ever remember having more or less stopped performing in a race.
Yesterday, in contrast, due to a number of late changes and emergency step-ins, I found myself with a significantly slower partner -- also a mate and also a great bloke. I will be honest and say I found the run very difficult. I never found any steady pace...was stop/start the whole way and though I enjoyed the day/event, I found the leg itself very hard work. Even when I "jogged", within seconds I was moving away from him and we really were very, very slow. With that said, I stayed on my partners shoulder the entire distance, let him dictate the pace, encouraged him to pace himself sensibly rather than push early for my sake and I think he thoroughly enjoyed his first Calderdale (had a nice e-mail this morning to that effect.)
The point, I think, is that in a 2-man team you really have to put notions of "racing" as we know it aside and get something else out of the day. Yes, if you're a potential winner in a very competitive team then that may be different, but for us mortals it seems to me that Calderdale is about something else. Incidentally, I also saw at least two other teams yesterday in predicaments similar to my own and, in the main, in each case the faster runner was doing a stellar job of encouraging the weaker one.
Personally, I would be happy to have marshalls spread around the course (because you don't find this stuff out at the handovers) disqualifying teams whose pairs really were to a significant degree running separately from each other.
I was going to mention your finish Geoff, the way you chased the girls up that last hill and we all thought you were racing them.....:D;)
I also saw a lady physically pushing her team mate up the hill and encouraging her at the same time.
Idealy the faster runner should be navigating and running a head to open gates etc and then took in behind. Gavin my whippet partner did a grand job and only pushed on up the last hill when I told him to, it makes me try harder having someone to chase when i'm tired and on that last climb on leg 4 you need something to keep you going.
It was remiss of me to have posted three times since the event with out saying well done Halifax. Top effort.
PS.. the car crash near the finish didn't involve any runners/teams did it???:(
Must say well done to my partner for turning up to run with a bad chest infection. We could not get a stand in and he did not want to let the team down and kept apologising to me all the way round. Good on ya Graham.
I was running with a team mate who is a little slower than me. He was also struggling after a short distance in to the race. I slowed down and we discussed the problem. I said to him that he should set the pace and I will follow. He told me to run on because seeing me further ahead was the only thing keeping him going. He had to chase me down and this kept him moving. He was screwed after the race but well worth it. So, it works both ways. I never got mile ahead of him anyway as I was already at the next gate to open it and close it. I think he was very grateful of this.
It does quite clearly state in the rules pairs 'must stay together at all times’. However I'm not aware that this is defined and it's therefore open to interpretation. It could mean any of the following;
- Within visual contact
- Within shouting distance
- no more than 10 metres apart
- no more than two other teams between you etc…..
I’m happy to be corrected if I’ve missed some info. somewhere.
As far as I’m concerned, as long as the baton is handed over with the two running team members in close proximity (i.e. 10 metres or so), I don’t have a problem on how close the teams are on the rest of the leg.
As the slower member of a pair I’m happy for my team mate to slow down for and check all’s OK at each gate, stile or road crossing as necessary. If he wants to run a stop start race that’s up to him. I personally hate being verbally encouraged by a team mate! I suppose it depends on how well you know your partner and what you’ve agreed before hand.
You want controversy? What happened to the pie and peas? They're why I traveled up from Brighton, not for soup and a roll; I can get that down here.
Serioulsy, I had a great day, and would like to say a big thank you to all those involved in bringing this together.
All the best - Raymond
If anyone can PM me with corrections / updates / suggestions for the route descripions, I will endeavour to get them updated before laying them to rest for another year. In particular the start of leg 1. But even if it's only trivial, things change each year, so do let me know.
I was on a leg with a lot faster than me runner but he was very
encouraging and his lead at times allowed him to find a better
running surface just off the track for me in some places
which helped my struggling legs:(
I didn't want him to run "at my pace" though, I wanted a slightly
faster pace and only he could supply that by doing the leading.
I was amused to see the variety of kit folk run with. I'm sure some of those rucksacks would be too heavy to check-in as hand luggage. And did "Marshy" really get round leg 5 carrying a telly?
Marshy through he was off out on a 10 mile trek, hense he needed supplies.
Give Sale credit through- it was our 1st fell relay and we managed to get 24 runners out. Some of the athletes had never done a fell race before and didnt realise you needed a 'bum bag' to run.
I'm very proud of all the 24 yesterday- hopefully we'll be alot stronger next year.
Did you see DoubleD (Darren) get slaughtered by Des Gibbons little lad? hehe he was shattered but he is going to be a runner like his Dad! so watch out you lot!!!
Hes only 7 upto now, but he will put you all at your pace for sure!
Being a Salford girl i was impressed Salford won! YEAH!
I was abit miffed about the "Famous Pie and Peas" did no one get them?
Thats it Watto outside! war...fight!!!
I waited in the car for 3 hours with the kids for the promise of Pie and Peas!!!
