Just back from a week of wall-to-wall blue sky and sunshine in NW Scotland.
Some stunning wildlife encounters on Skye, Rum and Eigg and in Knoydart, including Sea Eagle, Golden eagle, Great Northern Diver and Dotterel.
Work was a bit of a shock to the system today!

I saw what I think must have been a mink yesterday down on the riverbank. Weasely / ferrety looking thing, dark brown to black and about as long as my forearm; very agile and also very comfortable swimming in the water

-
Re: Today's Wildlife Encounter
Apart from plenty of Canada Geese (flying overhead and on the reservoir), Curlew, Lapwings & a Merlin over Kex Gill Moor best encounter was the grass snake on one of the paths around Thruscross Reservoir.
-
Re: Today's Wildlife Encounter
I found a grass snake today, unfortunatley it had been flattened by a vehicle.

Saw Pied, Grey and my first ever Yellow Wagtail today at the top end of Littondale, all within space of half an hour or so

Re: Today's Wildlife Encounter
We had a pigeon on the window sill at work today. It sat there for about 30 mins - could have been longer but I went home. I reckon it was a racing pigeon because it was tagged. Everyone else thought I was mad. They're probably right though...

Re: Today's Wildlife Encounter
Read in paper this week it was a 'Painted Lady' year (they're butterflies ). They arrived in mid Wales today, dozens of them coming up the valley and into the garden, had a walk on the hill and they were being blown over the tops. Guess there must be millions of them arrive in the UK? Anyway, great to see.
Otherwise a bloody swallow, they decided that as we leave the bedroom window open, our bedroom would be a great nesting site. Plus we would appreciate being woken at 5.00am by them twittering on the windowsill .

Re: Today's Wildlife Encounter
Swallow omelette anyone?:p

Re: Today's Wildlife Encounter
Got buzzed by curlew going over to Shelf Moor across Bleaklow then a yellow or grey wagtail in the brook - how do you tell the difference between them - I know one is quite common and the other quite rare?

Grey wagtail has a grey head and back, with yellow underneath, particularly so under the tail.
Yellow wagtail has a russet brown back and much more yellow underneath - on breast and belly.:)

Grey Wagtails are the common one - live here all year. Yellows are summer visitors - quite striking.

Re: Today's Wildlife Encounter
A family of Canada geese (two adults defending two goslings) on Turn Edge. I didn't realise there were two goslings at first so I intimidated the adults off the path. Having then avoided stepping on the goslings I turned round to see one of the adults flying straight at me.
Short-eared owl later on the same run, on Cut-thorn Hill. Among many curlews. A lovely evening run. :)

Re: Today's Wildlife Encounter
Dive bombed by irate seagulls all week, changed my route last night and was chased by an angry sounding dog. Made a nice change!

Re: Today's Wildlife Encounter
I rescued a sloworm. Driving along thru' countyside at work and saw a buzzard in the road 'gutter'. It flew off and left the lizzard there thrashing about - there were kerbstones so it couldn't climb out of the road. Stopped the car and picked it up and put it into the long grass, surprisingly it seemed unhurt. Good deed for the day. Missus counted 10 in the garden today, so they aren't exactly rare, but I like them.
