Another good one for me, I felt I was struggleing earlier on but came good heading down to the second crossing. Another PB by 35 secounds

I'm extremely chuffed with a 'PB' of 31:13 (2009 'PB' = 32:12, 2010 race 1 = 33:05). considering how lousy I felt on the 'farm-track; both 'out' & 'back'

My first Trunce, and it lived up to the hype. A great run, and I'll definitely be there for the remainder of the series. 27:35 wasn't too shabby for a first attempt even if I say so myself...it'll probably all be downhill from there though...:p

Think it was you that I had a back and forth battle with yesterday Sim, met at the end as well. Looks like you just pipped me in the end but I was happy with my new pb of 27:40, we just need to try and hang onto the coattails of IDP next time! :)

Conditions were about as good as we could ask for last night, which means the new pb's will be hard to top! :eek:

Still can't believe Rob in those sandals, awesome!

Ah yes! Great to meet you Starsky. It was a good run and a fun battle along the way mate. It will be interesting to see what the weather throws up to slow us down a bit in the future! Judging by some of the photos from last year's races on the website we got away remarkably lightly last night...

IDP is a machine - he's running 3Peaks AND the Downfall this weekend! :eek:

Didn't make it last night so just had a look at results. A quick pivot table shows 119 PB's out of 227 finishers! :eek: Dare I ask if I missed a short course or something :confused:

Mr Little even set a PB in his sandals, ah well, that's my 3-peaks shoe dilema finally sorted then ;)

No short course I'm afraid but it was dry enough, quite cool, Rivers very low and no wind to speak of, plus the course isn't overgrown yet. pretty much perfect conditions

Richard's first video is quite interesting. As we all know, Rob won in a staggering time whilst wearing SANDALS(!). He's generally too far ahead for me to get a good luck at his running style. But looking at him climbing at the beginning of the video is fascinating. He seems to keep the top half of his body almost entirely still, it doesn't even go up and down with every step. He glides at something between a fast walk and a trot up the slope. Its a very fluid and efficient technique and quite different to most others (I'm staggering up at an embarassingly slow walk a couple of minutes in looking like I'd rather be somewhere else).

Obviously, he's still got lungs like zeppelins and the leg strength of a shirehorse :D but I wonder how much he gains through running/ascending style?

I was interested to see just how soon the walking starts, basically after the first 3 runners everyone was walking. The hills in the Trunce don't seem that big but no matter how hard I try the walking on that climb always starts sooner than I'd like!

Not really sure how to get round this, put plenty hills in during training but maybe I should be doing reps on them? Any ideas??

I'm sure you're on to something with the efficiency thing though Simon. Generally I try and shorten my stride length but keep the cadence up and avoid any big steps up if I can as that seems then to be putting more strain on the legs. Guess it's a balance of conserving the legs and getting up there as quickly as you can. Actually I guess I don't really know what I'm talking about so I'm going to shut up now! :o

I can run up here in the race but often you have the problem of others walking up in front. the other problem is you have to go out hard at the start so you don't get stuck in the bottle neck so your muscles are suffering from oxygen depletion. I try and ease back on the field below to try and recover a little bit as runners go past but they are wrecked at the top. I then push on the upper field.

Ah yes but as we have already established IDP, you are a machine! :p

Like you're thinking though, I was wondering whether the fact that we've just come off a fast road section had a bearing on our (or my!) ability to get up the hill well. Think the tendency is to think that it's a short race so you have to go flat out but it would seem you can apply a bit more intelligence to it than that!

hmm not quite.

But yes you have to go off fast but remember it's not the first to the top of that hill it's to the finishing line. I find it easier to run the last hill up to the gate.

A guy kept pushing passed me and Simon going up the hill and he finished way down

I was thinking the same - first glance its balls to the wall flat out, but actually a bit of thought is definitely required. The climbs are short enough, but they are also steep. On the first one I felt slightly held up by walkers, but given a clear run it would probably have only made a few seconds difference. Its a balancing act. Ironically I found the hardest part of the whole race the final track section before the sharp right across the field and the dash to the finish, I really felt it just there, slowed right down then picked up again near the end.

But I suppose thats the good thing about the series - running PBs becomes more than a physical challenge, you learn to anticipate the course and it becomes as much a challenge of judgement as well. Ah, good times...:)

Ha ha! Yes, flipping Elbows McGinty! He nearly knocked me off my feet! :eek: I was briefly annoyed with him but was too knackered to raise a vociferous objection whilst climbing! He was trying to keep it tactical too by blocking overtaking attempts. :mad:

Ian, if you select "Results" and then click "Results For Season", you will get the total points for the season. However, at the mo, it's showing points for last year, not this season :(. I'll correct it tonight...

This morning I took Nick (an old friend of mine who's well on the recovery from Leukemia) for a walk around the full 'Trunce' route, as he came to 'race 1' & was rather taken with the 'spectacle of it' as he phrased it

(t'was first time he'd been in our XKR too, & I think he liked that too)

It probably took us about a hour & 20 minutes to walk it, in entirety.
Yes, we did follow the 'diversion', up to Greenmoor Road(?), & came back down by the bus-stop

I think the climbs surprised him, as he had to stop at the top of the 'steps', saying he was just 'trying to get his bearings, looking back over the valley'



He's a damned fine MTB racer, & has won quite a few races over his 'career' as a 'Sport'/'Expert', & finally, 'Vet' seasons

On the final climb, however, I don't think he appreciated the 'No Pain - No Gain' stone

Based on what he told me after 'race 1', I'm sure he believes we're all loopy. Now having seen the course in entirety - well, maybe I've simply confirmed his suspicions

(he knows the winners times, & my times (over the rounds I've run), & has seen Richard Asquiths images/video clips)


That said, on the drive home, he did suggest that he might start doing a bit of running, & join me for 'race 9'

No. Winning junior last time was round in about fifteen minutes. But there is a minimum age of 10 according to the site.

Start is the same, juniors turn right at the end of the long track (seniors go down the hill) and do a loop which comes out at the bottom of the climb by the first/third river crossing, then follows the same route back as the seniors.

It seem you ran a good race (32nd), & a second faster:D
(nice Insignia estate too, I still like the look of those, if seemingly a small load-space)

I did my usual trick of warming up too soon, & paid for it (plus I left you, & moved too far back - getting caught in the queue at the first gate)

Still, I managed to finish in 31:15 ('PB' = 31:13)


It was a fairly quiet night though for some reason, with only 191 runners:confused:

(so far this year there was; race 1 = 218, race 2 = 226)
