The Myo Xp's diffuser cuts down the light output too much and the Tikka Plus is just too feeble. If you get a chance try a Duo 14LED - it puts those in the shade ('scuse pun... :o). It also has a halogen bulb for those RARE occasions when you need a 100m beam.

(the last link is probably the cheapest source for a new Duo 14)
Thanks Trundler, but already got a Duo....albeit strapped to mi caving helmet :D I'd put a Duo at slightly too heavy for running, too.
The Alpkit's weight, especially as it only uses 3 x AAA, is perfect - it's just missing a bit more flood. They need to replace the traffic light colours with more whites!!
Waterproof too. Should stand up to my washing machine.
I went out on Monday night with my head torch but the reflection off the snow mean't I didn't need to turn it on. Best off-road night run ever!
Cannot disagree with that Dom. Christmas Day 2004, it snowed heavily for the latter part of the afternoon in N. Lancashire. After tea I ran up Nicky Nook under a full moon and a totally clear starlit night. Just my footprints in hundreds of acres of glistening, 4 inch deep, virgin snow. I did not even take the headtorch with me that night.
For the non-facebookers,
Would defo highly recommend the excellent ALPKIT GAMMA.
£12.50 very well spent, free p&p, superspeedy delivery, at that price buy a couple.
Does the job well.
Brilliant people to do business with too!
Unfortunately the Alpkit torches are out of stock until at least April
You're not missing much Toreador. They are good value for what they are and nice and light but have a very tight beam. okay for a steady run out but not good enough if you want to move relatively quickly over rough ground ;) Seems like a nice company to deal with though :)
Our club had a night score event the other night and Alistair Patten was there with these head torches for people to try. His son makes them in Oz and ships them over.
They're at the luxury end of the market but are well made and not too badly priced.

Hmmm, you'd expect question marks over quality at £12.50 wouldn't you?
Has anyone seen the new Silva Alpha headtorch? It has two arrays of LEDs - one for flood at your feet and one for distance (150m!). Costs about £300 with Li Ion battery.
Looks like yet another new leader could be emerging.... :D
It won't be on my list at £300 quid!
Nor mine, but it's interesting to keep abreast of what is at the leading edge.
£300!!!!
You cannot be serious!
On here it's £170-£260 depending on the battery:

Maybe it has a GPS built in ;)
I take it most of you are not familiar with the Petzl Ultra, the Hope Vision 4, or any number of mega MTB lights?
I won't be spending that kind of money but it is not such an unusual price if you want the (current) ultimate.
Nor me. Makes me feel all light headed.
How do you get into the Myo XP to change bulb/clean/dry out contacts? Anyone??
Good luck ;)
Blimey, thats a lot more difficult than dismantling the Duo.....
Think I may give it another couple of days to dry out more............
END OF HEAD TORCH THREAD TILL CLOCKS GO BACK.
SEE YOU ALL IN OCTOBER:rolleyes:
Can you tell I'am injured, off work and board? Oh and a little dyslexic.
Yes :D:D:D
Anyone else found their Silva LX to be somewhat tempremental? I'm on my second headtorch unit after the first one failed (batteries were fine though)
Was out doing BG support this w/e (Saturday am) and fished it out of the bag on Sunday and couldn't get the blighter to work. Left it a couple of days and it seems to be ok now.
How is everyone else getting on?
Pretty much on par with the experience of a clubmate who had an LX for one winter, 3 or 4 years ago. It ended up with the light head going up in smoke! You can't fault Silva's big 478 & 480 quartz halogen orienteering headtorches, but they appear to have 'got it all wrong' with their L.E.D. series.
