I still see the odd one still whizzing round.;)
Suspect they might just be getting a later flight.:D

Re: Today's Wildlife Encounter
Biggest Red (I think) Deer stag i've ever seen at 0730 this morning trotting through the car park @ Barley, and i've spent hours in many forests in the Lakes doing my degree, never seen one that big.

Re: Today's Wildlife Encounter
5 red kites and a herd of red deer yesterday but it probably doesn't count as I saw them after Harewood 10mile trail race and the herd were tame and the kites released there...I enjoyed them though.
Several grouse on way to teach my evening class and a tawny owl on way home...

I drive past Harewood every weekday on way home from work and it's rare not to see a kite or two. Magnificent birds and I think a fair 'spot' :)

They are amazing aren't they? I love watching them flying.
Saw two hares, a pipistrelle bat and helped a little toad across the road and prevented it getting splatted by the car that came flying up the hill.

Forgot to mention the two buzzards over Back Tor mid week.

Camping at a hotel?
I was meant to be camping and running this weekend. Am pining. :(
My rat was back on the nut feeder this morning. Haven't seen the squirrels since spring; thought a new local cat had disposed of them and the rat. They're my daytime entertainment.

Re: Today's Wildlife Encounter
That's a great photo Pilgrim!
Just seen a weasel racing across the road with a mouse or vole in its mouth. It was so fast!

He had the option of a bed but he prefered a night under nylon than a night with me

Re: Today's Wildlife Encounter
Came accross 3 Brown Trout living in a disused lead mine a while back, don't actually know what they were eating as it was pitch black; nor how they got in there. Found a rabbit in another, alive, do you know they can swim? Grabbed it on my way out and released it.

Big stag just like this one
http://i1.treknature.com/photos/6117/red_stag_size.jpg
About 4 feet from me. Happily munching grass.
Although this was in Tatton Park, so maybe wasn't strictly speaking 'wild'life. Still nice to see though.

Re: Today's Wildlife Encounter
Sparrow took off in front of me, trying to fly into the wind. Looked like he'd slammed it in reverse as he flew backwards at great speed:eek:
Poor little chap:(

Re: Today's Wildlife Encounter
Saw two horses leaning into the wind. It looked very funny, wish I'd had a camera, they were stood at a 45 degree angle. Went hare watching yesterday. Two large males in a field full of dopey pheasants.
-
Re: Today's Wildlife Encounter
Not one, but two big stags standing on the path so I had to run round them. Again, not really wild. Also, probably some interesting wildfowl but they were further away. I'll make more of an effort to run closer to the lake next time.
-
Re: Today's Wildlife Encounter
Nice one Noel!!
Better than my effort...loads and loads of rats on the road to Thirsk and I am mortified to say that I ran over one's tail with my motorbike. Silly creature decided to turn around and run back to the side after I'd swerved to avoid it.
Yes...I know there are fell running farmers out there that will be shaking their heads in disgust that I didn't kill it but I'm not that kind of woman.

Re: Today's Wildlife Encounter
One of our guys - Mark F. - had a close encounter with some wildlife on our run tonight. Running up the track from Carr Meadow towards Chunal (near Hayfield) a sheep suddenly appeared out of the heather/bracken and stuck its horn in Mark's leg. Ripped his running tights from thigh to hip, but fortunately no damage to Mark. Then one of RichT's collies saw the sheep off!
It all seemed very amusing at the time, but it must have been very close to doing Mark some serious damage.

Aye Geoff. Pennine country. Where men are men and the sheep are...scared.

Re: Today's Wildlife Encounter
Rare sighting of a deer in Chevin Forest Park (Danefield) today, probably only the 3rd time I've spotted one in about 100 runs up there.:)
