Any idea of the climbing?
stagger have you seen the calder valley teams yet
I'm doing leg 3 this year, did leg 2 last year... that was a good run, some tough climbing.
This may sound a really stupid question...but does the route generally follow the c'dale way bang on?
Im just asking so i can plot a map of some sorts.
Are there any sign posts like there are on the pennine bridleway?
Looks like i am making my Calderdale debut this year. Our captain is asking who wants to do which legs. Any advice on which are the best legs and ones to be avoided?
the race follows the CWR almost completely, but deviates in a few key places:
Start of leg 1 to join CWR from the start line
Detour out to Stoodley Pike on leg 2
End of leg 3 on the road from Hippins Bridge to Blackshaw Head to approach from the right direction, and changeover on top road not lower road.
Start of leg 4, drop from top road to lower road in Blackshaw Head to rejoin the CWR.
Mid leg 4 shortcut through woods to Wade Bridge avoiding Jerusalem farm.
End of leg 6 drops on road to join canal towpath at A629 bridge rejoining CWR on B6112.
I think that's about it, all the details are on the Halifax Harriers web site anyway.
Signposting - yes but can't be relied on, you need to know where you're going.
Yes and yes. But see http://www.halifaxharriers.co.uk/rac...way-relay.html for detailed leg descriptions. Not sure where the OS map extracts have gone, though.
Depends what you like, how fit you are.
Leg 1 is long and tough, but the one I personally like the best. Quite boggy in places, and some difficult steep descents.
Leg 2 is not so long, has the benefit of going over Stoodley Pike, but also has some long road sections and a long road climb in the last 1/4 of the leg.
Leg 3 starts low and finishes high - not much descent. It is short though, and quite nice to run.
Leg 4 is quite long but not too much climb. Long moorland section which can be water logged depending on weather. Big climb right at the end. Some people rate this leg because least road running of all, and most on the moors.
Leg 5 never run it, but believe it has the most road sections and least moor. Probably the trickiest navigation, and the one most people like the least. Second shortest.
Leg 6 another long one, I've not run it, but it's more like a trail leg than a fell leg, suits runners who are fast on the flat. But you might be good at that kind of running.
Leg 3 if your a good man going up. Just under 5 mile but no hassle with cars, you just turn and run back to your own and you can get a shower in the swimming baths where you start from.
Leg 4 if you like rougher off road 1 good down and 2 good ups. 9.25 mile you will get wet and you need to learn the moors for if the clags down.
Avoid leg 6 its a road event.
Avoid leg 1 too many folk and too early in the morning.
Hope this helps;)

as derby tub already pointed out in post 2, it is well marked and on the OS map, any deviation from the actual calderdale route will in the instructions on the halifax site. it all there all you have to do is look!
Did a recce of leg 2 this morning. Enjoyed it that much that I ran back across and got picked up back at Cragg Vale.:D
Best part about this leg is just before turning off at Withens Gate to Stoodley. I stood there for best part of 5 mins. Not a sound! I could have stopped there all day!
Im in.
Leg 3 with a much better runner
how you find out the mens teams tom?
Cheers mate. The positives are that if i do leg 1 you know what time you are starting and are not stood round in the pissing rain waiting for the previous leg runners to come in and you have the rest of the day to spectate. If i do leg 6 i get a bit of a lie in and get to actually finish the race.
Are you still recovering from injury?
Hi everyone,
Just a thought...
Here's an essential Calderdale relay tip...
Here's just a little tip from my experience of hearing others' tales of woa over the years !!
I know we have quite a few newcomers on here who may be new to this linear relay lark... although it could happen to any of us.
When you go to the END of the leg you intend to recci (with both cars) and drop one vehicle off with everyone's dry kit and shoes/ towels in, the driver of the leg-end vehicle should PUT THE CAR KEY ROUND HIS NECK ON A BOOTLACE (or similar) after locking it up!
So many, many times i've heard of the leg-end car driver putting that key into his jacket pocket or bag or whatever, and only after having been driven to the leg-start, setting off with everyone and running the 8 or 10 miles or whatever the leg is, and getting to the car at the end, before exclaiming "Oh no!, I appear to have left the k eys in the other car at the start" (moderated version!)
Hope this saves someone for a VERY long day recciing. Have a good recci and relay run everyone,
Allan G
But you are on the shortest leg 3 Tom with Darren le Talbot. Most folk run that leg and then jog back reverse route, (shouting encouragement to those still competing!! )

Leg 1 for me. Does anyone know if the start is at North Dean Woods or Clay House Park? There is conflicting information depending where you look. If its been moved to North Dean Woods does that mean the 1st leg is a bit shorter than advertised?
Clay House Park last year;)
Right ive heard that leg 3 is almost totally uphill
Please tell me this isnt true
