Yeah agreed but on long rides I'd also expect to spend time at lower HRs - maintaining 84% of max for 3-4 hours is tough!
And one of the benefits of getting fitter is that you can maintain higher speeds at lower HRs ...
120km on Saturday round Edenbridge, Idle Hill, Pilgrims Way, Star Hill, Knockholt, Biggin Hill.
Av speed 28kph, av HR about 80% max.
28k to work just tad over the hour mark.
Feeling better in the less wind conditions and the time is coming down.
Good one Stagger :)
Good one Zoot :)
Yes, keeping a high HR for longer rides is tough, but again, the way to get to racing fitness for me... so it has to be done!
Legs very tired from yesterdays race but the sun was out, so just had a steady ride up & round the Hope Valley to flush the heaviness out
Todays ride to work was a slow, lifeless affair. Ride home wasn't much better, stomach bug's knocked all the energy out of me:thunbdown:
What a morning.
I went out on the winter bike to do my 1hour time trial (its 25.3k with 390m ascent)
Blasted it and came in with my best time ever on any bike. 55mis 30secs Average speed just over 27kph
HR average was 84% and max was 94% I have more in the tank I think.
Oh and the biggest surprize was that I downed a couple or 6 beers last night with a couple of Blues thrown in.
Over the moon
Might go out for a recovery jog after tea.
Had a great ride into Dentdale, Kingsdale. Great to feel the spring sunshine on yer back, finished off with tea and bacon buttie in Ingleton.
Some of us were off biking in the muddy stuff today....

....But what they really need to do is partner with Hope to supply them built up with hydraulic brakes rather than cabled brakes.

Great vid, that bike in the vid looked like it had hydraulic discs Dom, or is that just for the prototype?
Dom, that link is for the "Dirty Disco" carbon fibre cyclo-x frame, not the Ti in the vid.
As for the brakes, the Avid BB7 will be a lot more powerful and more reliable ( not as affected by water & crud ) than cantis and a lot easier on maintenance than hydraulics, albeit not as powerful.
Steve, definitely cable operated Avids, just look at the closing sequence close up of the front hub.
Sorry, didn't spot that - thought it was the Disco in the vid. The Hope pic above is a convertor that takes a cable from a standard STI lever and links it to a hydraulic resevoir that then powers a hydraulic disk brake. Paul Oldham (in the pic above) was racing it in the British champs this year. I have a PX Uncle John with BB7's and they're not much cop. Nowhere close to the hydraulics on my MTB.
I tried mechanical discs on a cross bike and came to the conclusion that my Shimano cross specific canti's are better... Can't afford the hope converter, they are like gold dust anyway, or were last season... and retailed at about £300 :w00t:
Han, Were they Shimano or Avid? A mate has Avid BB7's on both a touring bike and an ATB, he loves them. Better than the BB5's on his short-lived Boardman 'crosser! Had a nasty experience on the 'crosser 15 months ago; the rims picked up moist snow then iced up, hence looking to get away from rim brakes for off-road and winter!
Not quite as muddy as Daz... but another great photo by our very own muddy sports photographer Dominion :)

AAAAhhG this is so frustrating - I can't see the pictures!!!!
No idea what the techno reaon is but posters who put thumbs on I can open up the file but otherwise its just the wretched red 'x' in a box. No idea what the mud looked like or those pesky brakes - quite spoiling my monday morning!!
The things we do for a womble... < sigh > ;)
This better?

Cheers Zoot
Just done the commute to work again 28k only steady though.
With yesterday afternoon being very pleasant and the evenings drawing out, went early to Carwags for a daylight bike ride, rather than a dusk Bat-run. Starting ( and finishing ) at the top of Carwags Lane, I headed along the fell road for the descent of Crombleholme Fold and completed the 25.075 miles of the Loud Vale Catchment in exactly 2 hours 10 minutes ... not at all fast and no long climbs, but constant undulations and many short but really steep climbs. Been pondering this route for several weeks and glad to 'tick it off' on a good spring evening. Now have a yardstick to improve on over the summer!
I am getting very frustrated, as work is getting in the way of my cycling :( It is hard at the best of times to fit in training but leaving home at 6 - 7 am and not being back till 9 pm the earliest is starting to get at me... Top that up with free lance translating work to make ends meet that has to be done outside work hours and there is no time left for myself, let alone eat and sleep :( Feeling run down and knackered and race season has just started :( :(
But on the up side, I think I have sorted my bikes now (none of them were working anymore for one reason or another) and will test them all tonight! Not been on the bike since Sundays race :(
Home again after a warm 28k commute home.
Calf is feeling a little tender may need a rub.
Lovely commute today, 20km and 2 decent hills each way. Not my fastest, but such a nice sunny evening I just had to cruise and smile.
I actually managed to leave work just after 5 today, test rode the three bikes with dodgy front mechs to satisfaction, then cleaned them... Now I need to do an hours training on the turbo :/
