I have to admit I thought you lot were joking about the dripping sandwiches until I saw it on the menu! I don't think I have ever had a dripping sandwich, looking forward to it - see you all then.

But they don't provide Kendal Mint Cake. Just about everything else edible, plus Stollen and dripping sandwiches, but no mint cake. I have to carry my own, which probably loses me a few vital seconds due to the extra weight. Grumble grumble grrr... [wanders off into the undergrowth...]
this is worrying- I did this race last year and have no recollection of either stollen which I love or dripping sanries which I quite like if it is slightly brown (from bacon bits) and salty. Did I just run past?
Welcome Karen to Calderdale Group of the LDWA.
You seem to have missed out previously on some of our gourmet dripping sandwiches. I have to say I prefer Marmite which gives a guaranteed all over taste whereas dripping can be a bit uneven. Not so certain about the cholestorol content of either product but you are probably not bothered about that. Both are a welcome contrast to the sweet stuff.
The sandwiches are at CP3 and a few at CP5. You need to go into Steve Gumbley's workshop at CP3 to find the food grotto where there is a toilet for retiring entrants. It is on the left of the track as you pass through the CP.
Finest grotto in the world, mmmmm marmite and dripping, there's a combo to drool over:thumbup:
Looking forward to another marvellous Hebden, cheers Alan and team :)
The food on this brilliant race, is very very good. There was a good chocolate cake I seem to recall at CP2, and as for the food grotto mentioned above, well it was like stumbling into Aladdin's Cave!
After seeing the superb checkpoint offerings a couple of years ago on a recce of the Wadsworth Trog, an entry has been put in for 2013's event! :)
I have entered this and then realised I have 4 tickets for Liverpool Norwich and taking the family including my 8 yr old grandson to his first big footy game. how could I have forgot. just hope TV move the game to Sunday now?
just back from recceing the last bit (that I didn't do last time) from Broadhead Clough up/down Cragg Vale and in to the end
very glad I did
lots of scope for going wrong
particularly impressed by the number of house gardens you find yourself swanning through
oh, and the "hidden stile" in the holly bushes - genius!
The tricky bit into Lord Wood and the hidden stile in the holly bushes will be way marked as will several other bits in the second half as they have been for the past few years. No way marking in the first half. The house owners through whose garden you go do know you are coming. It is of course a right of way. There could be a nasty collision if someone steps out of their front door. Generally residents are welcoming. Hope you might have been impressed by the amount of gardening we have done this year. Cannot guarantee we got every bramble and holly bush but got most.
Broadhead Clough is a site of special scientific interest and the Yorkshire Wildlife Trust volunteers mainly courtesy of Helen Pedley who lives there have done their best to drain the path.
Hope you and the rest of the forumites have a good day
Hope you all av a good un, I'm out, back to physio on the morning of the run. Going to try to nip over for the finish though.
Good chance I won't make it either, but I'll run if I can. Having an ultrasound scan on my hip on the Tuesday.
Haha that makes sense - I also went out and had a look at the second bit of the route which I don't know and was struck by how many of the holly bushes had been trimmed back. Being a bit daft I didn't associate this with the Hebden and just thought Calderdale was home to lots of keen Christmas wreath makers etc etc. I found the route finding quite tricky in parts but the fact I was going past so many trimmed holly bushes is reassuring... and indicates I wasn't too far off the right tracks.
The old Alfer will be doing this one for the first time. It usually clashes with Ovenden but that race has been rescheduled to February this year so no excuse this year to miss The Hebden :D I have not reccied it but I know most of the route from other runs in the area so it should be straightforward. I won't be hurrying and intend to have a full sampling of food round the checkpoints
If you know you cannot start send an email to Carole at [email protected]
Oh I remember that recce all too well! I remember seeing the groaning table of cakes and thought a.) it was a mirage and b.) when realising it was real that they were for us!
I still blame you/ thank you as being one of the reasons I got into this fell running lark after your excellent recce that day Alf!
Good luck and happy feasting in the Hebden,
you certainly deserve it!

The weather is looking wintery for the weekend! Should be good!
I was thinking just that. Lightly frozen ground means abnormally fast conditions for Calderdale. I remember the deep mud with a gale trying to blow us off our feet last year making progress difficult and energy sapping.
Thanks Rachel nice of you to say that. I always remember that comment you made on the recce when I sank into that deep snow drift
"I'm surprised you sank so deep cos you aren't a fat ******" ! I knew then that you would do well in fell running  :D
See you there mate. Coincidentally I bumped into Dave (dogruf) on Sunday at the Trigger and the first thing he mentioned was that recce.
Hi,
Does anyone who has an entry and can't go want to sell there number and transfer entry for a friend of mine? :-)
seriously looking forward to this now
looks like there'll be at least 20 forumites
I'm targeting a sub-5, so will wear my red Fell Ponies vest to help put me into Ferrari Mode
I'm targeting starting, & finishing will be a bonus. I haven't run a yard since 19 December. My hip's no longer giving me problems, but that may just be because I've not been running. Plans to start running again tentatively last weekend were scuppered by a cold/throat thing that won't go away. I'm just desperate to start running again, so Saturday could be it. Nothing like 22 miles round Calderdale for a warm-up! Getting out of bed on Monday morning could be tricky.
Different challenge for me this year- get round, stay in one piece ready to do another run very soon, leave enough energy in the tank to add 5 miles on at the end
I have been looking forward to this, but must admit it's looking doubtful whether I'll make it now. Have been laid up with 'flu (at least I think it's 'flu) since Saturday, am starting to come round but it's slow. I'm hoping for a miracle cure!
Looking forward to this, but heavy snow forecast for Friday. Hmmmm?
Not just thinking of the event but the travelling up early on Saturday... I'll leaving home at 6-ish.
Would anyone local to mytholmroyd be able to give us reports on here?
The weather front is forecast to move in on Friday night and drag its heels through Saturday as well, with snow all the way (no rain). Could be interesting. If it's looking too risky I won't venture over the watershed in my motor vehicle. I suppose there is the possibility of taking the train on Friday instead and getting overnight accommodation, but that relies on the organisers and marshals being able to travel and make it happen on the day. Oo-er.
The main roads should be fine though.
Looking forward to it...camera is definitely coming too!
