I might as a warm up for the race ;)
Have some how conspired to be committed to camping in Nether Wasdale on Friday and Saturday. Anyone ever been there? Not particulalry convenient for race or post race celebrations - I suppose I could always run over via Sty Head in teh morning.;) How long would that take?
On another topic altogether, my Mudroc 280s are beginning to come away between sole and upper. Do I try to track down new pair or risk it with the old ones?
Nether Wasdale..Top Spot, Screes Pub Does good food and ale. The Strands has it's own brewery now, just don't be in a hurry for your food. Can recommend the chick Pea curry at the screes (Ideal pre race prep) Fri/Sat/Sun There's a festival on at the Bower House in Eskdale, loads of bands playing.
As for getting over to Borrowdale from Wasdale. At an easy(ish) plod it took 40min from wasdale head to Sty Head last weekend and I reckon another 20-30 min to Seathwaite. (I'm nee Joss Naylor)...Much respect if you do that and the race..H.D>
Hello forum - first post here from me :)
I'm thinking of turning up for the Borrowdale on the day. I've got the route checkpoints marked on the map and can see all the obvious paths but is the route marked out in any way or is it a work it out yourself thing?
I'm not especially fast but tend to get round okay but can see myself running a solo race.
I'm guesstimating that I'd probably do this run in the 3 1/2 to 4 hour bracket.
What do you think is a reasonable first effort - I run 35 to 40 miles most weeks all off road in the dales and lakes and would reckon to do the Wharfedale off road marathon in say 4 or so hours. I've run the 3 peaks of yorshire half a dozen times (3 in the proper fell face) with a PB of 4:40 ish but I have been doing much more running of late and (touch wood) don't have any injuries so maybe a 4:30 better fits my current 'speed' ...... if speed is the right word :)
I'm expecting to add 30minutes onto my PB for the 3 peaks. I've got a feeling I could get an "and the rest" comment here.
So 3.30mins with a pb at the peaks off 4.40 may be asking a tad to much.
Its rougher tougher and higher.
Its also my first time, so im just looking to set my self a target for next year.
Gulp! I can see it being tougher (the huge boulder field leading up to Scafell Pike being a good example) but the distance is shorter and surely nothing on earth can be as painful as ascending Whernside! I came up with the 3 1/2 to 4 mile guesstimate from a jog trot I did to the Pike from Langdale returning back round Bow Fell (?) taking me 2:55 ish. That's say 11 or 12 miles so another hour on top could work.
I must admit I'm now worried if its supposedly tougher than the 3 peaks.
EDIT - Just seen this http://www.borrowdalefellrunners.co....esultsborr.htm and have revised my micky mouse assumptions accordingly. Looks like 5 hours would be good!
You will wish you where back on Whernside when you start the climb up Gable! Have a good race.:)
Dont worry about it stolly,
Im just giving it a go without even worrying about times this year.
The 3ps is a lot more runnable, I think and thats why you get round it quicker.
Listen to me, I sound like I know what im on about.
who cares about times
im just hoping it will be clear so that i can take in the day
when your sat here at work in this dump and its chucking it down you dont half appreciate the fells
My only purpose in trying to guess the time is so that I can tell the wife the approximate time of my return home........... should I survive of course!
Hmm I'm really not sure how long it'll take me. As long as I can make it to Barrow for 3pm Sunday I'll be happy ;)
wahay - daz - you'd be proud............ got up GG in 27 minutes this morning!! - mind you hadn't already run 3 hours but all the same!
I have just navigated (well watched huw going round in cirlces!!) off GG over to Windy Gap grey knotts, brandreth etc etc in the thickest clag, howling wind and driving rain I've seen - especially for July! Think we did a really cracking job off getting off that fell to be honest - it was unreal:eek:
only when you come back down to Honister to have a mug of Emmis home made soup to warm the cockles!:D
Flipping hell your putting the miles in :eek:Quote:

Feel guilty sat here doing nowt :(
Bill
I am pouring over maps jotting down bearins for BGR legs mind :)
Emmilou - am I imagining it or did you, on the June recce, have a loose bearing you were following between Bessie Boot and Esk Hause? If so, what was it?
I know we went right of the tarn below bessie boot, but thereafter it's a bit hazy. If the clag is down it would be helpful to have something in mind:cool:
can't remember it Sam:eek: eek - I'll have a think, it'll come back to me - honest!
yes we did Mike - bit of a dilemma to find the right trod - very disorientating in that horrid condition, anyway, Huw seemed to think it was quicker and preferred it but I'm going to avoid as yes agree with you on the not as smooth as you think opinion!!
It was ok and is pretty runable but the time I get there i think my best option on tired legs is straight up as oppose to Moses. My ankle/ligament injury really took a battering on that trod and I'm suffering for it today:(
so sticking with plan A;)
Yeah, consider me 'educated' ;)
I'm still up for it though. I was injured when I did the 3 peaks this year and had a hard time of it. Now I'm pretty fit, have been running alot and I need my cocky, confident smile turned into a grimace by something like this. My main concern is the navigation but I'm sure that with pale into insignificance once I get going.
It'll become the least of my problems was what I meant....... but I was joking
More seriously, given that I'm joining this race on a bit of an impulse and at the last minute (I don't even have an OS explorer map of this corner of the lakes  ), I'd welcome any tips...... from anyone..... about anything to do with it.
I've ordered the race map from Pete Bland which I should have on Monday and have the race checkpoints printed - but thats the sum total of my preparation!
if you want a serious answer Stolly then I'd say don't just rely on your Pete bland map when it comes.
If the weather is as bad as yesterday for example and you have no experience up there then please don't assume you can follow the person in front.
look down to check your footing look up and your lead has GONE - honest!
Get your OS maps, gets your coordinates, use your compass and don't rely on the person in front -you never know it maybe his/her first time too ;)
Just done my last longi(ish) run 10miles very slow. Im on easy street from now until about half way up Bessy Boot in a weeks time.
Best thing is this time next week, Ill be knackered, aching and 2 or 3 pints for the better.
