That's a coincidence, I had a dream about being forced to keep running when I wanted to stop and eat cake.

got my handbook through too
Only problem is no free weekends to recee it
Will have to hope I follow the correct footprints and torches!
Nice picture of Saz on the front of the handbook
Don't forget your spoon everyone !
As its 62 miles would I be right in thinking that most people would be looking at peaking around 40 miles during training? About 2/3 of the total distance?
Is that too much training?
If I remember rightly 40 miles will just get you to Fleet Moss - where the fun really begins ;)
I did the fellsman for the first time last year and my longest prep run was the High Peak Marathon (circa 41 miles but probably nearer 43 using our 'less well known route' on the night ). My training from then was totally messed up though, following a twisted ankle at the Edale Skyline, which I then proceeded to make 10 times worse by going over on it again at the 3 peaks. I had to pull up 4 miles into the 3P and barely ran again until the start of the fellsman!!
All things considered, at the start of last year's fellsman, I therefore felt er... somewhat less than confident of getting round. My twisted ankle was still pretty bad and heavily strapped and trying to run over all the open fell and bogs (and the cobbled monstrosity of a track down into Dent) was a nightmare. On the last hack over Buckden Pike and Great Whernside a team buddy came hugely to my rescue, lending me her walking poles, and that was enough to get me through all the crap up there and I even finished with a fairly strong 3 mile run in along the lane down to Grassington and Threshfield. 18 hours 10 I think.
All in all a long way of saying that if I can do it last year, pretty much anybody can :D
Link to my slightly over the top write up from last year
Good read that, thanks. I'm really looking forward to it. I think!
My longest run in preperation will be the Lyke Wake Walk/Run/Crawl (41 miles?) 4 weeks beforehand. Hoping to do the 3 Peaks on Saturday, but I've got a right stinker of a cold at the moment, so I'm hoping that clears up pronto (the girlfriend taxi/support vehicle doesn't operate on Sundays).
I am doing the Fellsman and then Marlborugh Downs 33miles on the 15 may followed by LDWA Heart of Scotland 100 on the 29/30th of may, so based on the above it looks as if my training strategy for the 100 may be about right:D
Great write up on last year Stolly, lasting memory from last year for me is that fantastic rising moon as we crossed Fleet moss
What`s the best route across fleet moss is it straight through? iI have now been over there twice and i really feel i have yet to find the optimum route any pointers would be much appreciated.
If you subscribe to the Grough web site's mapping tool, thingummybob, (£1.50 per month or thereabouts) you can look up a really good map of the fellsman route. I've only looked at it briefly but their route dips a little south of the straight on, bogs up to the chuff 'oles, route (that I took last year), following a wall line. That I believe is the favoured line.
Great write-up, Stolly.
I've looked at the Grough route and its slightly different over Fleet Moss to previous routes I've taken but think its much of a muchness really. Nice to see a well plotted route at last !
From various descriptions it sounds like Fleet Moss could be hard work. Not one for recce'ing but may check this bit out.
Would I be right in thinking there are around 20 checkpoints that must be visited, but beyond that route choice is open to the individual (although I guess for the most part it's probably fairly limited)?
There are a handful of mandatory bits and pieces, listed in the handbook, but mostly it's up to the individual
Excellent... cheers!
If anyone fancies doing a checkpoint ,the Middle Tongue one is short of a couple of inmates , have a look at the Fellsman website > news
I did the Dodd Fell one a few years ago with Mrs D and it feels good to put some thing back into the event:)
The checkpoint is just beyond this swamp.
It could be dry this year, if so will it be quicker to bash through it or navigate around?
I only heard about this mighty event last night - hats off to you lads btw, I need to practice a bit more before attempting it, I only do the little stuff :D
Anyway, a friend of mine who IS doing it has a question regarding maps for the event, I've had a look at the earlier posts and it does mention a web site but he wants to know if you get the whole Fellsman route onto 1 (one) OS Select map? As I'm no OS Select expert (I had my first look today) I couldnt answer the question.
So, any help gratefully received :)
cheers alan
The whole route is on the OS 1:50000 sheet 98. Bear in mind that if you need to use the map during the event you are likely to be in trouble! If you need to refer to the map at night you are in BIG trouble!
The guys on this forum will tell you which sections need a recce so you can prepare pace notes and key bearings. I last did the event 1985-1989 so paths may now have changed and now be well worn in. I'm doing the event this year and will be popping over Fleet Moss to take a look when my damaged ankle sorts itself out, and a look at the night sections over Buckden and Gt Whernside.

Each competitor has to carry OS Explorer OL2 and OL30 OR Harvey Outdoor Maps Dales West & South; the route therefore doesn't fit on one map.
thanks lads , my mate does check the forum regularly but he's not got round to registering himself yet. Im sure he will find your help useful.
Wow fleet moss is available in Google earth street view yet my house isn't whats that all about!!!!!!
Whilst I can see what you are saying Roger i.e know the route well. on that section and esp at night if you don't have your map in your hand you will be in trouble. The reason most people get lost is complacency, you should be ticking off the features as you go so you know exactly where you are. Waiting until you are unsure is the wrong time to get the map out.it's already too late.:(
Point taken and perhaps this is a better answer than my alarmist response to the original question about maps. However night navigation with a map is tricky so it's best to know the route or hopefully someone in the group knows the way. I've been lost twice and on both occasions it was a miserable experience!
This time I'll be taking a GPS :D
Stolly I'm sure the route fits on OS 98, will check tonight.
The rules require the maps I said though; presumably OS 98 is too small a scale?
As for night navigation on the fellsman; it depends really on where you've got to by nightfall. If its Buckden Pike and Great Whernside, I'd say its quite easy with the only difficult bit being to travel by compass bearing from the GW trig checkpoint until you hit the fence.
Rules:
Maps. EITHER Ordnance Survey OS Explorer OL2 and OL30 OR Harvey Outdoor Maps Dales West & South. Details of older maps are available on the website.

The following map combinations are acceptable:
- Ordnance Survey Landranger sheet 98
Hmm. If a maps's missing from the list does it mean it's not allowed?
I was going to take my BMC/Harveys mountain map, plus one of the old green 1:25K maps to cover the bit that's missing (Gragareth)
if I was still going to do this - which I probably won't be - I was going to question the 'having to carry the actual map' rule.
Does this extend to waterproofed high-quality colour photocopies - or likewise print-offs from online mapping?
I'd suggest the latter are a superior option to the actual map - cos for one, if I had to mess around with a folded OS map and a bloody mapcase in a howling gale, I'd never look at the damned thing.
(sorry if this has already been asked ....)
It was answered two posts back. Hint : http://www.fellsman.org.uk/doku.php?id=faq:maps
My answer to that Zoot is that I don't know; sure as hell don't leave it until the morning of the race to find out as the fellsman kit check is the most detailed and closely scrutinised kit check in Christendom - they even check your fellshoes for worthyness and sufficient grip
Having just read the majority of this threat - My take on all this mapping stuff is - you must carry the OL 2 & 30. I will do exactly this, all wrapped up and stuck in my daysac. My navigation though will be from a selection of choice waterproofed colour photocopies with the leg notes etc annotated on it. As far as I am concerned - I am obeying the rules completely.
First Time I did it i used just the 98 Ha won't do that again.
The last two times I've had just one of the OL which does most of the route and 2 a4 sections of the bits that are missing Fleetmoss I think and this "got through" kit check. I was lucky I think but had all the maps in my hold all just in case.
No walls/fences marked?
Because it was the only map i had and i was 17 and a student= No money.
But that was when it was a real race;) non of this starting and finishing in day light. Every one had to do the night as it was a midday start.
23.21 as a walker in heavy full shank mountain boots. we were hard in them days:rolleyes:
