Three of us set off for todays race but turned back due to a bad accident on m6 causing its closure from junction 34 to 36. Imagine numbers may be down or was the race delayed, doubt we were the only ones who realised the start time wouldn't be met. Hope everyone had a good one, it's a cracking race.

Absolutely superb race. Massive thanks to all involved in organising it.
Was sitting outside the pub afterwards in the sunshine having a pint and had one of those moments when you think 'it doesn't get much better'...
Some photos here.
More photos on Pauline's blog.
Pity you missed the race ~ the weather was spot on and about 250 turned up.
When we saw the queue on the M6 we phoned the 3 Shires Inn to let Selwyn know of the issue. He decided to delay the start until 11.30.
Great piccies from the 'Charters' link in previous threads ~ very professional.
Just thought I'd add my thanks to the organiser and all the helpers and marshals. Brilliant race and so lucky with the weather.
Enjoyed Selwyn's stories at the start! Pity some missed the race.
Had planned to recce some of Langdale today, but am instead at Bilbo's enjoying a relaxed coffee. I don't feel too guilty.
Well done to all and thanks again!
oddly can't see pauline's pictures even trying internet explorer and chrome
Found in Holme Fell car park (!) a very soggy Horwich vest . race number 173. I assume it was from 3 shires. can return if needed.
That would be Tony Varley's vest. Don't know if he inhabits the forum.
Adam
If you are doing the Langdale horseshoe you could take it there for me, otherwise please post to 1 Kensington Drive, Horwich, Bolton BL6 6AE.
Thanks very much
Tony
have you been running round or driving home naked Tony?
Richard,
You are almost correct, this is the first time I have posted for years. I was told there was a message on the forum about my vest.
Cheers
Tony
I believe the forum went down but does no one have comments to make about the clag-fest nav-nightmare that was the thirtieth anniversiary running the Shires? :D
I missed that on Facebook, Lauren! Would love to know how many DNF's there were to make me feel better about my detour-ridden completion. The embarrassment of ending up on the wrong side of Blea Tarn will fade, although the scars from my slides on the way down there will take a little longer.
This is what all Lakeland AL's should be like.
From what I have heard there were 38 DNFs, three of whom did not report to the finish and are likely to be taken out and shot.
A thoroughly enjoyable race. It was particularly entertaining seeing runners who had confidently flown past me earlier on in the race coming into the finish whilst I was supping tea and eating pies.
Facebook: uugh!
Tough Tough Race
I ballsed up the line to three shires, went well up blisco and then fell on the summit and gashed my leg before running waaay too far right towards Blea Tarn. Was 30 mins slower than expected - a disastrous race really, but oddly enjoyable. Unfinished business!!!
ahh so the cool kids went to facebook and I knew nothing, sounds familiar
it was a great race. I was proud to have finished and not got too lost. I was passed by one group of runners three times! Clearly they ran faster than me but their nav was lacking...
I myself found a new contour round the right hand side of the ridge towards the three shires stone. It was horrible and should not be repeated!

Amex shows great delight after Tindersticks shows him the way to the pub!
oh that's who amex is! Didn't you hurt yoursel on this race a couple of years ago? well in fella
looking forward to this now
only done it once before - 5 years ago, when it was my first Lakeland Classic
keep meaning to get back and can't believe I've left it so long
classic Black/White Fell Ponies vest gets the airing...
Very much looking forward to this one, having been out of action for the past 6 weeks due to an ankle injury.
This will be my 26th consecutive 3 Shires.
Here's some of my stats:
First race in 1988 taking 2h27m10s
Best time in 1996 taking 2h10m16s
No race in 2001 due to FMD
Last year's time 2h55m02s
This year's time ?????
I'm sure Selwyn has booked the sunshine as usual
Was really looking forward to doing the race this year, I love this course but I have to be honest and say that my legs/feet haven't really recovered from the UTMB and I'm probably best giving it a miss, which is a bit depressing.
Good luck to everyone taking part, I will probably be at home wishing I was with you.
One year there was a fuel shortage and rationing was the order of the day (no it wasn't during the war!!). I was driving a 4.0 litre petrol Range Rover at the time doing 14 mpg. Luckily I managed to share a lift in a 'normal' car so I could get there. Not many turned up for the race that year. But as Selwyn always says ''if you can get there then the race is on''.
It is looking very likely that car parking will be in the field by the pub this year.
There is also the Langdale Half/Marathon on at the same time. Make sure you go to the correct car park.
Selwyn has decided to use SportIdent and dibbers this year. If you have your own dibber, bring it along.
Long, steep, slippery, no actual path, lots of work still to be done once it is over ....
Once you get onto the climb it's unrelenting, but it's a real cracker. Not as 'enjoyable' as Lingmoor at the end which really is a brilliant test of how well you're going. 2 popular options for Wetherlam, a slightly longer rising traverse straight after the fell gate (bracken dependant), or along the track a bit further and then straight up. Both options meet in a bit of a 'col' just below the last scramble up to the summit. There'll be plenty of people doing both no doubt, and probably a fair few in between.
If it's your first time doing the race, save a little bit for Lingmoor and the glorious feast of fast grassy running from the summit - and remember to enjoy every minute of one of the finest races available. You're in for a real treat :o)
Thanks Chevingbytorchlight!
This will be my first of the classics and nervous, but almost looking forwards to it now!
You'll love it. Don't get carried away on the fast running available early doors and you'll be fine. For my money it offers the best terrain underfoot of any of the classics, as well as some nice easy scrambling in places. That's not to say there aren't some tricky bits, it offers a good all round test of fell running ability, but it's a great introduction to the classics as well as being a supreme race in it's own right.
If you can get round this, Langdale offers a good next step up with much rougher terrain, a mile or so extra distance, and more intricate route finding.
Today I've had a nice leisurely walk from Three Shires stone to the finish and it's extremely dry underfoot. It's been lovely in lakeland today, fingers crossed for something similar tomorrow..... I got lost in the clag last year.
Perfect weather - dry, no wind, not too sunny; very dry underfoot compared to last year and 2011 - even the descent to Blea Tarn was dry - well nearly. Thanks to Selwyn and all the marshals - a great day out.
