I've entered this but my partner's ill and unlikely to be fit enough in time. Anyone know if it's possible to swap to a different partner? Or alternatively, does anyone have an email address for the organiser so I can ask them direct, the only contact details I can find on the website is a snail mail address.
I swapped with someone last year and joined Bob the dog after his partner pulled out late on. I dont think it was a problem and I am sure John (BTD) can point you in the right direction. I still wear my T shirt with pride for a great day out.
I don't think there will be a problem swapping partners. You could send a message to the organiser via the Achille Ratti club. ydt
Yeah, should be no problem so long as your new partner meets the qualifying criteria. Contact details are here

They may even be able to help find a new partner. I searched high and low and then went for a bit of internet speed dating and that is how Simon (Corniceman) and I got together and had a fantastic day out in less than fantastic conditions.
Hope you get fixed up.
Thanks. Yes, the guy that's "thinking about it" meets the criteria almost as well as I do - no cat A fell races, but lots of mountain marathons instead. All I've got to do is get him to commit before he thinks too much and realises what a daft idea it is :)
My partner has also pulled out, as has her replacement. It seems that flaky characters outnumber the stalwarts. I don't hold out much hope, but I have been surprised before...
If there is a dependable character who thinks they may remain healthy up to 19th May, who is not clumsy or injury prone, who doesn't have an over-active and intrusive social life, who really wants to participate in this magnificent event and is willing to put up with a misanthropic churl for 8, 9, 10 or 11 hours in the Lake District, then feel free to PM me.
Otherwise I'll notify the organiser of my withdrawal and I'll be that bloke who you might pass who set out half an hour before you doing the course on his own!
I am keen, and seeking a partner
HOWEVER
I will be VERY slow
I have SERIOUS doubts about making the Angle Tarn cut-off
I think I am right in saying that that is the toughest one, but even if I make it I wouldn't rule out missing the Cockley Beck cut-off or the 12 hour finish
anyone willing to risk being timed out with me?
PM me and we'll discuss it...
I think you could surprise yourself Daz. I did this as my first fell race in 2010. I'd started running the year before to run the Snowdonia marathon for charity and that was my only previous race. It was a baptism of fire (literally in the heat) but I did manage to get round. It was tough (I usually describe it as 30 mins of realisation, followed by 11 hours of hell) and at the time I didn't enjoy it at all, but I look back on it quite fondly now. I've got fantastic memories of the race and it's still my favourite mountain day ever. Go for it!
Missed it last year with an injured back but looking forward to it this year :-)
The Cockley Beck cut-off is the tightest. It's likely that if you only just make Angle Tarn then you'll be timed out at CB. If you make CB you've got plenty of time to get to the end, so think of it as a race to get to CB for the cut-off, then you can slow down after that. We had 30 mins to spare at AL, only 12 mins at CB in 2010. I found the worst bit the Grey Friar climb after CB - the worst hour of my life, so far.......
that's not how it looks from last year's results
of 10 pairs that reached AT in 4:40 or over, all 10 were under the CB cut-off by more than they had been at AT
I actually had a very encouraging training run today - 8 hours out around Kinder (inc. 5 ascents) - I felt fitter/stronger/faster than of late
still need a partner though...
right
just dropped entry into post-box!
DazTheSlug and BritNick are a team!
just need to spend the next 8 days tapering/carb-loading - think I can manage that
I was out doing an OCT recce today with some mates and found an OMM Kamleika smock on the descent from Helvellyn. Looks like it's been out in the open for some time, so I could easily believe it was lost at last year's race. Let me know if it was you ....
Martyn
Don't worry Steve, I'll gee Daz along if he needs it. Daz, I'm sure you'll do the same for me if/when I need it. I'll just give it my best like I always do and see what happens. That strategy usually produces a successful outcome.
I'm feeling good after a successful Brecon Beacons 40 a couple of days ago. My pace seemed to be so slow I was expecting an over 10-hour finish. Strangely I picked up in the final third, which included a climb of THAT corner up Cribyn and one of the world's longest descents back towards the finish. The final 14 miles became my time to do the overtaking instead. I surprised myself to finish comfortably under 9:30. Hopefully that will translate into a sub-11 finish at OCT if we can keep things in control?
Is there anyone still looking for a partner for this? I was entered, then swapped my place with a friend due to injury. Injury recently fixed, but wasn't sure of my hill fitness...did a 22 miles OCT recce on Saturday and felt reasonably good. I'm not the fastest and will no doubt be close to the cut-offs.
Wahey! Nick & I are both listed as Ponies on the entry list on the website
Nick - did you email the organiser and "defect"?
Well Done on your good (injury free!) run at BB40
I am feeling increasingly confident as my taper kicks in, and will be raring to go come Saturday
I am going to whizz round
Positive Mental Attitude and all that...
You're a monster, Brit Nick. How many miles have you done so far this year?
I was all geed up for doing this myself, but with my partner droppping out I've decided to take the opportunity to cultivate some good-will at home and accrue some brownie points to cash in later in the year.
Have a good one.
Met Office:
Mostly cloudy with outbreaks of rain and extensive hill fog. Sleet or snow possible over the highest summits. Strong to gale force east then northeasterly winds over the summits with a severe wind chill.
At least there's not much risk of overheating :)
Funnily enough, I was going to add a PS to my previous post observing that it's about now that the first cataclysmic weather "forecasts" should get posted.
I always find THIS ONE very useful...
I've seen mention of soup/sandwiches, but are there any other foods usually available at Wythburn/Cockley Beck?
Daz, no emailing or defection took place. Are you sure you didn't 'doctor' the form before posting it off? :p I have a dilemma now. Which vest to take? It'll be irrelevant by the sound of it anyway because it will be hidden beneath survival gear. Oh joy.
I didn't know any food or water was offered on this event. I thought it was all self sufficient. Isn't it?
MarkL, >560 miles so far, mostly races.
yum!
meanwhile... 4 days out... forecast improving slightly:
"Saturday
A cloudy start with some rain over the south of the park but drier and brighter conditions across the north will gradually sink south. Strong easterly winds easing a little. "
Two different weather forecasts a day between now and race day - that's up to ten different weather forecasts, eleven including THIS ONE. Hey, there's a reasonable chance one of them might be right!Quote:

It'll do what it does on the day, I've reproofed my OMM jacket and sprayed the remaining nickwax on my legs:thumbup:
Probably be cracking t'flags now:rolleyes:
Metcheck is more to my liking. ydt
I think Yiannis likes the clag down, as it makes it more interesting navigationally :sneaky:
personally, if I'm going to spend 11 hours on the hills, I like to get at least an occasional glimpse of them!
on the other hand, I wouldn't mind testing my new Mountain Equipment Firelite jacket ;)
Does anyone know the rough cut-off time for Scafell Pike? Not doing the race, but was hoping to see some runners coming through if I could get there in time.
Cheers.
What's the crack with water do people carry most of it round with them? I read the organisers say there might not be any at the checkpoints.....
