Well the Fellsman is now full - 450 but they are holding some entry forms as the reserves for those that pull out.
Best get those maps sorted !!:)
What are people running this in? Any tips from people who've been round before?
If I start in fell shoes it's either X-Talons (relatively new, but aside from a small amount of rubbing, bizarrely, on the insides of my big toes pretty comfortable) or an old, battered pair of Wave Harriers (proven comfort for 4+ hour runs in the Lakes, but losing grip and springing holes in several places). The alternative is my Salomon XA Pros. Loads more cushioning, but significantly more weight and less grip. I was thinking of carrying these in my pack to change in to in the latter stages, but perhaps lugging this extra weight round is a bit daft.
So yeah, bearing in mind terrain and distance, "pure" fell shoes or something a little more comfortable?
Reading this post, the answer seems kind of obvious, but, and this is quite possibly very stupid, I feel like there's a psychological advantage to starting in fell shoes... like I'm here to run.
Hank,
I ran it in Adidas Swoops (old design) one year. I wouldn't recommend out-and-out fell shoes. There are some hard rocky tracks that give your feet a pounding. Trail shoes with better padding that fit very snuggly to your feet to avoid getting sucked off in bogs are the best. Worn out shoes with holes will be rejected by the inspectorate.
Last couple of times i have used inov8 315's. Out and out fell shoes will not protect your feet, trail shoes are the best bet, in my 'umble opinion!
It is Inov8 315s for me - but as they are the only off road shoes I have it is a very easy choice !
Can someone explain the exact difference between FELL & TRAIL shoes ....? To myself (uneducated in this area) they are virtually the same - big grip, minimal in comfort and very durable - that seems to sum it up.
Cheers
Paul
I'd say: fell shoes hold the foot tighter, have lower profile soles (i.e., barely any cushioning), have more grip in the way of proper studs, are probably lighter and usually less comfortable. So Inov8 Mudclaws, Mudrocs and Xtalons, Walshes, Montrails = fell; most of the rest = trail.
and there's a few that could be described as either
Not all fell shoes are durable either - the racier models of Walshes and Inov8s have both come in for some stick for being the opposite ...
For summat like the fellsman I'd personally be very much looking at the trail end of things, with a bit of comfort and cushioning. You won't be leaping down many steep descents at top speed after all.
Cheers ZHR - that does clarify things quite a bit.
As for any running in the Fellsman - hmmm only for the first bit then it I will just be praying and hanging out ....
Thanks
trail shoes are made for endurance and supposed to have more cushioning underfoot. fell shoes / those will nobbley grips are not very comfy on the hard stuff. there is quite a bit of hard ground, from the start you don't really get to softer ground until you start dropping down into kingsdale, and the wonderful track from flintergill down to dent! if i had used fell shoes i bet i would have been crippled. using 315's i only get sore feet from the distance and not the wrong choice.
Thanks HH. I find my 315s very comfy and to be fair I found them fairly reasonable in all the conditions I have used them. As you say the soreness is not from shoes or distance but the time on my feet.
They were fine with my BMC map with the extra strip of Gregareth gridsquares scanned from the relevant Harvey's Map and laminated over the tourist info box. If it weren't for the different colour palette used for altitude, you wouldn't notice.
But then I've been forging lift passes for 20 yrs so a race map's no problem ;)
Slightly worrying me all this talk of cushioned trail shoes and checking for grip.
I only have X-talons and was planning on using them, albeit an old pair with studs about half worn off. Any one else using them or used them in the past for Fellsman.
On another note it says for the kit check you need long trousers, breeches or leggings as well as waterproof trousers. Does that mean I can't just take my OMM kamleika bottoms, will I also need tights and if I did would 3/4 ones do. Never worn tights in my life but if thems the rules I'll have to get some
I thought everyone took two sets of kit ;
The first one for the kit check and-
The second one the stuff you actually use
;)
Ah, but what about the random kit checks they do at various places. I wouldn't want to be without my tweed breeches and 3lbs of emergency chocolate then..:D
Interesting... trail shoes it is then!
Another question for those that have done this before... are there any sections that are particularly worth reccying? I can probably get up there for one day before the event, so I'd like to make the most of it.
All this discussion and debate on 'kit checks' is good but I feel that it does highlight an issue with some events and kit checks. Having discussed with a few guys on the OMM the size and weight of their packs etc, it is known that the 'random' kit checks are vary scarce, if in fact they exist at all, therefore no wonder people do not carry the correct equipment and can compete with daysacs weighing 5lb or something daft. The personal choice of do not skimp in case you get caught out in bad weather does not seem to always apply. The other side of the coin though is now for an event such as this where discussions and concerns appear about 'half worn' studded soles and trail shoes etc shows that there is a vast variation / interpretation as to what is acceptable and what is not in my opinion. The mention of 'Thermal' tights I would take as being that any running tights presented at the kit check must have the title of 'Thermal' mentioned on the garment label - not just running tights / leggings - but would they accept the latter garments?
On the shoe side it does say 'First class condition' & 'manufactured for fell walking / running or an acceptable studded sole' - I would read this as any trail shoe / walking boot or fell shoe in that case - but as for 'first class condition' - I have only ever seen shoes like this once - when they have been taken out of the box! So the non-acceptable 'misshapen or worn' is quite debateable.
Quite an interesting topic this - there is no wonder it is contentious as when people have travelled many miles and paid entrance fees / accommodation etc I would be annoyed to be rejected for failing a 'kit check'. I can see a complete set of spare kit being taken for the just in case ...
Is the kit check at the end - Threshfield in the morning before you catch the bus to the start or at the start?
If its at the start and you've just taken all you need on the bus then you get rejected, how would you get back to the finish to get your emergency 'if i get rejected kit'?
Or can you take more stuff to the start and leave it there if not needed?
From memory, in the information pack sent out, I think it says that a kit check is available in the evening at Threshfields (to cut down waiting time in the morning) plus there will still be a kit check on the morning of the event at Ingleton with random checks throughout the route.
I am camping for a few days before hand so am getting 'the boss' to drop me off at the start so my 'reserve' kit will be in the car. Saying that if I am not busy I will try to get it completed the night before.
This is from memory though as I have not got the pack in work with me.
Thanks Sore legs. I didn't see that in the info booklet but it would make sense to do the checks the night before especially with 450 people this year.
I was planning on the Recce of fleet moss car park to maybe buckden pike and back. Does this sound advisable. Will probably book a day off work in the next week or so if anyone cares to join me, ..or should that be show me where to go:D
Ref doing recce's - I am not experienced in this event, but there are plenty of others that are - this is my first Fellsman but having read several threads on this forum and others - this does seem to be the area if that is worth a recce. If I can get off work for a day or 2 I would check that area out and make some notes.
Sorry I could not be of more help.
The bit worth recceing is definitely the Fleet Moss, Middle Tongue to Cray stretch. As for what shoes to wear, I'd say fell shoes for sure.
Recce: try and do Fleetmoss to Yarnbury (20 miles +/-) then you've covered the difficult bit and the dark bit.
Shoes: Roclite 315 perfect for me.
Yet another question!
Anyone know what the deal is with water? I received my handbook on Friday but, although there's an extensive menu of food and drink available at many of the checkpoints, there's no mention of water provision. Are we expected to carry our own supplies? I hope not... I drink shed-loads and don't fancy setting off with 5 litres in my pack!
Went up yesterday and wasn't too bad (although it was first time up there so nothing to compare it to).
Only saw another runner, map and compass in hand throughout the whole morning....not even any sheep up there yet!
Went from road side to Middle tongue, then Hells Gap....then back again just for the pleasure. (Average speed 3.5mph:eek:)
Quick questions......can anyone recommend a sack for this type of event?
I have bumbag, small gelert pack type thing and Karromor Hot Ice 25l rucksack. Just think I need something bigger that the gelert Pac (approx, 3 litres). I like the Karrimor, baceus it is just one single compartment,, can't be doing with fiddly pockets, tabs and zips.
Fellsman is now FULL according to web-site ;)
Good to hear Fleet Moss is "in"!
As for packs, I ran it last year with the OMM classic 25 l sac which was too big for the amount I was carrying. This year I'll be using two of the OMM Last Drop 10 l sac, the 6 l waist pouch (giant bumbag) or the 2 l chestpouch/nosebag which were fantastic on the OMM itself as a trio but I reckon I'll only need one/two of them on the Fellsman. I need to spend a few private evenings on Bleaklow working out which of the three bits work best. I had thought of just attaching the chest pouch with nipple clamps but that might not get me through kit check.
Got an OMM Adventure light 20 for this. Bigger than needed but managed to compress it quite well so sits firm and it is damn light.
Recce'd fleet moss to Yarnbury on Saturday with a small group. Found a reasonably dry route, but some mud jumping was inevitable before Stake moss.
Thanks for the advice.
Tried the Last Drop, Inov Race 12 and the OMM Adventure lite 20 at the weekend and went for the OMM AV 20.
Tried it yesteray on a every winter round of Carnedd Llewelyn and very impressed with capacity, weight and general fit.
Anyone planning a recce of Cray to the finish that wants to car share?
Need to do this section before the event so coul dmeet in in Threshfiled then take a car up to Cray.
Next few weekends should be ok.
Any takers, drop me a line.
Not long now....
Emailed off the organisers to ask if the good old kit check would be avail on Fri night for those who are stopping at Threshfield....Good news on that front came back - one less thing (& queue also) to think about come the Sat morn.
Reply from organisers was....
We are indeed having a kit check session on the Friday night at Threshfield and we are encouraging anyone who can get their kit checked there to do so. Hopefully it should ease the congestion at the start on Saturday morning.
I look forward to seeing you on the weekend.
Aye, not long now!
Yep and the weather is apparently turning wetter and colder for this weekend - just in time to quench fleet moss's thirst and get things proper mucky again :). Here's hoping for fine weather on the day/night though.
I went Fleet Moss to Capplestone Gate 10 days ago and only encountered a soggy patch on the approach to Oughtershaw Tarn (having taken the southern route), then the climb of Gt Whernside was very wet. The rest was very dry and since then it's been warm and dry so the soggy bit's should be well improved by now. A bit of light rain shouldn't change things and may benefit from softening the underfoot. It's 22 years since I last did this event, done very little in between and only started preparing for this back end of last year, out with torn ankle ligaments mid Feb-March didn't help. Looking over from Middle Tongue I could see Ingleborough in the very far distance and it inspired me to scratch FFS onto a stone at the base of the trig point.
Might pop over Blea Moor and continue to Dodd Fell on Sat. Getting lost in Dent village somehow bothers me!
