It would probably mean that I'd have to buy a load of techie kit ( Garmin / sat-nav / fancy 'phone that isn't a phone etc? ). I'm billy-bog basic when it comes to IT.
Also, there was a post on one of the threads about ne'er-do-wells using Strava logs to locate the homes of riders with top-end bikes ( it's inevitable on something with bragging rights like Strava, that you will eulogise about what you're riding ) and helping themselves to the goods.
I guess if I did get into Strava, all my ride logs would start and finish at Lancaster Police Station, or Lancaster Farms Young Offenders Institute?
Ian.
Nah, don't bother, us cyclists don't use it :)
I managed a good 4 hours on the MTB today. Sun was shining but it was still barely above freezing in the lower area's and lots of ice and snow still on the top, and felt around freezing when standing still, but f-ing freezing when descending ;) Took one of my 3 layers of merino baselayers off, still wearing winter sofshell and winter tights though! Spring is no-where near yet, but it was a lovely boggy, icey ride. Great to be back on the 29er, after several months of not being able to ride it :)
I am very unfit though :( Not sure I am up to next weeks first event of the season, may well have to skip it :(
Well done Hann. It can take a lot to "get out there" when conditions are not inspiring. You'd think that years of pushing yourself out of the door, regardless of conditions, would make it easier with the passing years but it doesn't. Looking at mates in Bowland FR and in the CTC group; I'm developing a theory that jetting of for a spot of winter sun in the Med, or where-ever, can actually soften one up and undermine one's resolve to face up to the British winter? To Be Discussed?
I went to Majorca a couple of weeks back, for a week... But as that was also the first week I was allowed back on the bike, I didn't get as much out of it as I would otherwise have done...
It was still cold, even there, but not as cold as here... I don't know if it softens one up.
I am just finding it hard having to start from scratch again while I was going so well last year. I had hoped for a good winter of base building for a great season of endurance racing. In stead, I am starting from scratch! It took me the whole of last season to get to a fit state to win 12 hour races, so not looking forward to having to start from scratch again. I think that and the cold is what I am struggling with right now...
Can't believe that this thread had slipped to page 4 during the past 4 weeks.
Apart from 3rd January ( still recovering from the "blood alert" head wound ) I've managed all the other CTC Thursday rides so far this year, plus all the Tuesday morning rides since late January.
Some days it's been 3 layers of thermal wear plus the windproof, padded tights over padded under-shorts, ME "Alpine" mountaineering gloves and a buff under the helmet.
Point of this post is that yesterday, despite riding between roadside banks of snow, from the weekend, that were above head-height, we managed 58 miles (without any backtracking or route duplication) yet we were never more than 10 miles from Lancaster town hall. All on beautifully dry, clear roads with warm sunshine despite the sharp wind.
Hour and a half on mountain bike. Lots of snow on trails and been over the bars while trying to blast through a drift. Landed in a lump in the snow and burst out laughing.
Think I have damaged my meniscus in the knee so I will be doing loads more cycling. Gutted because I thought I was just getting fit and down to a good racing weight.:o
A tough 50 mile around the Peaks District.. Some interesting moments hitting snow at some speed.
Really enjoying the bike at the moment hope these cycling miles can produce some good running performances.
did Tour D'Ingleborough today on the mountain bike. 28 miles and only fell off 3 times though did crack my knee.
going out with Kent Valley Road Club tomorrow for a 40 mile memorial road ride (Derek Tunstall ride) to the top of Kentmere (if the knee has not seized up)
Just out of interest, anyone on here had dealings with 'Cotic Bikes, based in Belper, Derbyshire? Their "X" 'cross bike looks rather nice, in heat treated CroMo.
Another 80 mins off road, mud and snow certainly make you work hard.
Stopped by 5 foot high snow drifts... we still have too much snow but at least roads seem largely clear of snow and ice now, so road ride tomorrow then :(
90min on the MTB, first ride in over 4 months.
God it was awful, I always forget what it's like for the first week or so. Legs not interested.
Well, went out again. I look forward to the day I can sit down without crying.
Tried a 4 hour road ride yesterday, gave up after 2 hours, managed barely 2.5. I am utterly fedup with the freezing temperatures, snow and ice and have given up cycling. I cannot train the volume I need to train in these conditions, it is simply impossible and doing up to 8 hours on the turbo really isn't an option when training for endurance MTB races :(
The last time I wore shorts and s/s jersey without at least arm and knee warmers was in March last year :w00t: I am not kidding you! On our ride yesterday we were trying to think back when we were last out without all sorts of thermal layers and if you look at my race photo's, even in the hight of summer, I am wearing merino baselayers and arm warmers... They would get stripped down around my wrists if it was a little warmer, but largely, they were worn!
By the way, no personal experience with Cotic, but several friends have and rave about them...
Cheers Hann! Have a look at the "X" crosser on their website; looks about as nice as you can get in real steel, all the "extras" are there in a nice discreet sort of way. I know that you personally won't be interested, having the ultimate Ti cross-weapon!
All The Best,
Ian.
I have a Cotic Soul, I can confirm that it is lovely.
Anybody need owt????

I don't ride 2 of them (Uncle John & Pompino), and I want a nice new shiney bike to get some fitness back this summer (and possibly have another crack at duathlons, but tell anyone that bit... ;-) )
Just realised that there's a complete 9 speed Campagnolo Daytona groupset as well (including Daytona hubs laced to with Mavic Open pro rims.)
Early doors ride, 2hr 5m CX slithering about.
Another CX ride, 2hr 20m. Hills, mud, snow, smiles.
30 mile bike yesterday but seem to be cramping quite a bit possibly miles put in over lakes last weekend but this has never bothered me before so curious i could understand if it was 100 i had done it was only in 1.30hr as well on cx bike i used to use mtb and never had any probs
Just done my 25k time trial in 57.12 minutes. Pleased with that has there is 400m of climb in it and all was into the breeze this morning. Any time my average is above 25kph in the pennines its been a good effort.
Nice morning too.
Off for a long dog walk on the fells now.
Today I made it clear from the off to MrRTS that I was Contador. "I'v took two parecetamol for this bloody cold and I don't care how many times you flick out your elbow, I not taking a turn at the front". So on this understanding we left home for a good 22 miles with 640mtrs of assent. Really good ride with 4 cat four climbs and a cat 3. Would of been even better if someone hadn't stuck Winnets Pass in (I got to the first yellow bin before I died). MrRTS had grown a beard by the time I got up the top, taking to a guy who had just ridden up it for his 65th birthday!
The finish was a sprint for home in the last 100mtrs and I won. I didn't tell him it was a sprint finish but a win is a win :-)
Did my first Sportive yesterday, the Bay Dash from Lancaster. It was 110km and 1100 metres ascent of wet and wind (a magic headwind that knew to change when we headed back towards home) and despite the 100km around Cheshire the day before, i felt ok. Actually that's not true, i felt ok until the last 10 miles and then the world and his wife came by and i was wiped out and sick of everything ever.
Enjoyed this foray into cycling proper and plan on doing a few more in the build up to a solo go at the Fred Whitton in late June. Next up after a few local long rides is the Keswick Sportive in May. I think nothing the day before might help.
I fancy doing a 10m TT.
So I have just done a 12.25m effort with 775ft ascent.
Av speed was 17.6 mph
I need to improve cadence and body position, Oh and effort, plus lose a bit of weight.
So onwards and upwards
32 miles - enjoyable ice cream at halfway. Not so enjoyable getting cramp in my quads on the way back! :w00t:

160 km from Newcastle to Berwick. Stunning scenery and reasonable weather. Up visiting the inlaws who happen to inhabit this very underrated part of the world. Craster kippers halfway were brilliant!
A BIG HEADS UP for a couple of bikes that were stolen today from a Bowland member who lives in the Ilkley area.
A Pinnacle Arrow 1 x 9 MTB, white aluminium, black carbon seat stays, solid carbon stanchion forks & disc brakes. Absolutely immaculate - I was riding it myself at the AW / TWA.
An Odessa aluminium fixie ( no transfers or graphics ) in bright orange with black carbon forks, black semi-riser MTB bars and purple anodised rims.
The owner is offering a £100 reward for information that leads to the return of these bikes, please.
The way these scum work, usually close to home, the bikes will probably be offered for sale in the Ilkley area.
Regards, Ian
20 mile ride to a club 6.5 mile road race, managed to finish3rd on tried legs after racing the Duirsdeer Hill race on Saturday, then20 mile ride home, the legs were wilting a bit in the last 10 miles.
