they are every where:rolleyes: I get tired of either standing on them or jumping a mile as they shoot out of the heather a foot in front of you.
Kinder, Bleaklow, Howden/Derwent edge, also on Blackhill and Chew I suspect. If you get off the beaten track or are early on a morning before the ramblers are out you should see loads.
Best head count for me was 20+ in one view in spring at about 6.30 am near High Stones.

What do we need? More foxes. Or perhaps eagle owls, or even eagles? That would be a nice sight.

Re: Today's Wildlife Encounter
A flock upwards of 200 Curlews at Marton near Barnoldswick this mornin'. Very unusual to see so many inland; must be on spring migration from the coast. Hope it bodes well for a good spring.

House Martin possibly but didn't see any white on it. Black all over and flew in to a hole on a barn roof thin swept back wings. flashed past pretty quick though so just assumed it was a swift.
Lots of Curlews and lapwings dancing in the wind today.
The Kestrel I saw earlier I've seen 3 more times and always close by, once with it's mate. I've not seen one this close in this area before so I'm assuming(again) it's a new nesting pair.

Re: Today's Wildlife Encounter
Heard a curlew on Shelf Moor tonight but didn't see it, what a lovely sound, haven't seen any swifts , swallows or house martins yet but lovely to see lapwings dropping out of the sky on the way to work.

Sand Martins first then Swallows, Swifts and finally House Martins. I think that's the order.
Seen any of these lately?...generally found in the plug'ole or on the bed sheets...

Re: Today's Wildlife Encounter
Saw a woodcock today for the first time.

Re: Today's Wildlife Encounter
Some sort of owl on Cutthorn hill. It was a bit misty, and I'm not great at owls, so I couldn't tell which sort. I can rule out little, barn and eagle. ;)
Other than than some curlews and a lapwings. Loads of grouse on Axe Edge, and some mallard taking advantage of the bogs I was trying to avoid.

Re: Today's Wildlife Encounter
Saw loads of dead worms on the surface of the Scar today.
It could have been because it was the first real rain we have had in a along time.
Still waiting for the House Martins & Swallows to return.

I wonder if they where put off after hearing about our cold winter on the news.
They might book a flight somewhere else this year?

Re: Today's Wildlife Encounter
April 13th for the swallows last year in Masham, 11th the year before, 9th the year before that so I am expecting the first bedraggled little creature to be preening outside my window on the 15th April!

Re: Today's Wildlife Encounter
A couple of Hawks today. Fantastic to see them hover in such a stationary position in such windy weather.

According to the Guardian today "Scientists in Ghana this week reported great flocks of swifts heading north and the first swallows and wheatears have just arrived in southern England from equatorial Africa... Next week we should get a rush of migrants."

Re: Today's Wildlife Encounter
Think I saw two oystercatchers over Longdendal res today, couldn't be sure but I was fairly close and I've seen lots of them up in Scotland but never here - anyone know if this is likely? I looked in my book and the only other possibilty I could find was a godwit.

Oystercatchers is quite likely. Saw some down at Carsington Water a couple of weeks ago. Never seen Godwits around here, though.

First Swallow spotted today :):)

Re: Today's Wildlife Encounter
Weasel (or small stoat) running across the road near Northallerton. Red Kite above the M1 near Wetherby. It's great that they're spreading - 10 years ago this would have been a great surprise.

Re: Today's Wildlife Encounter
My first wheatear of the year today on Wild Boar Fell.
Also a solitary golden plover on the col between Wild Boar Fell and Swarth Fell.

Re: Today's Wildlife Encounter
