Borrowdale Fell Race

my first time too, and thoroughly enjoyed it!
might've struggled in clag, but happily "followed" on the bits I didn't know (Bessyboot to Esk Hause, Gable to Windy Gap, round Grey Knotts, off Dale Head)
only fell on my @rse once on the scree descent (then lost any time I'd gained by having to stop to empty the gravel out of my shoes!)
reached Honister a massive 13 mins under cut-off :thumbup:
pottered in from there to clock 5:37
good to see emmi at the finish

I won a pair of those Innovate Debrigators at the Gt Hucklow race, and I was really impressed - they actually work! Not having to empty my shoes made up a lot of time! I'll definitely use them on Jura next year.

Just need to work on my cramp now!!

I bought some debris gaiters a while back, but miserably failed to pack them [doh!]
it was quite nice to have a sit down though :o

Ta ST. Throwing my toys out the pram because I was convinced I would get round inside four hours this year (having run Duddon in a shade over 4 in May and done plenty of training in between) - but got nowhere near, and in fact was slower than the first time I did it in 2009 when I'd been fellrunning for all of five months.

Aerobically I feel very fit and thought I'd prepared well - but I cramped up at the top of Gable and from then on it was just a case of getting in, a soul-sapping stumble as a procession of people went past. Bit demoralising and just got a feeling I'd be better off sticking to trail running, where there might be a better correlation between my fitness and my times / positions!

My first borrowdale too! Had a very steady run/walk all the way to Honister, upped the pace a little climbing Dale Head but then both thighs cramped up as soon as started descending. Thought I was a goner but after faffing about for a minute and some "Keep moving" advice from Chippendale (thanks Mark) I stumbled down to the Tarn and managed to run to the finish in 3.49. Really enjoyed the race, think the steady start is a must for these lakeland races then a few beers in the pub with the usual suspects from Wharfedale H. Was very lucky to find the youth hostel after circling a few fields in the dark. Will definitely be back next year. Beers on me at Viking Chase.

Had a good run this year 3:48 11 minutes quicker than last year (1st time) thanks to all marshalls and helpers.Glad the weather held out.

The main thing for me was beating the cut off and this I did by about 15 minutes. Didn't think I was going to after climbing Gable, which I found very hard going, but the run between windy gap and honister was not as long as I remembered it and again the visibility helped. Also some encouraging words from a chap from Long Eaton.
Finished in a very slow 5hr 30ish (easy to improve on next year!). Thank you to all the marshalls and organisers. It must be a bit of a pain waiting for us slow runners.
I can see why it's a lakeland classic. Felt much harder than Langdale or Three Shires.
Can there be any better feeling than descending for the last time, with the event field in sight, knowing (a) you've made it and (b) you can soon stop running!

Big thanks to scoffer and team. Great event , a classic and never fails to live up to expectations.I had to run from the bottom of the corridor route with one contact lense. Never had one come out before but after squirting a gel in my face both came out. I just managed to put the left one back in just before styhead tarn. God knows how.A couple of pieces of chocolate off joss and then back to buisness.Ive recced this a lot over the years but still small things make a huge difference. Running over the rocks was hard with only one good eye. I carry a spare but i would have lost loads of time putting another lense in. Tried in vain to catch ted mason going up dale head but he was just too fast.Have to say a big well done to the pennine runners but best of all alison brentnalls run. Very inspirational.
