In the immortal words of Churchill the Bulldog......
Oh Yes!
I couldn't have shouted at you as I didn't know which one of the DPFR vests you were! Daz pointed you out after you'd finished, but I didn't get to catch up with you. I was surprised at how many took the stone path down off Mam Tor, rather than the more direct line straight off to the left. Time wise it's little difference but staying on the grass must have been easier running than avoiding the walkers on the steps.

Darth...... you've (mostly) always had plenty of Quality!
Hat's to the Dark Peakers... (and more)..
Great Event today...!
Well done to you folks who did & helped.. & helped...
(I was more than rather (very) jealous on the sidelines)
The light in Edale is rarely better... special day.
At least I enjoyed the first half an hour!
I felt very good at the start and went off a bit fast - I was 16th coming off Kinder, dropped a few places on the climb up Win Hill, then completely lost it on the way up Lose Hill. By Mam Nick I had dropped to about 35th, and was rapidly running out of energy. At Jacobs Ladder I could barely run anymore and was in danger of cramping so I just jogged back the rest to finish 76th :(
UPDATE - I was no faster to Win Hill than I was in 2006, so I wasn't going that fast.
Boo Hoo...:(:(
well done to all who competed yesterday
as for me...oh dear. was running well until mam-nick then it all went pear shaped, to the extent that my hamstrings/groin/back/shoulders/neck (do not delete where applicable) still feel shot to pieces this morning
i was eating and drinking at regular intervals, and pacing myself comfortably based on who was around me...but the slog over brown knoll was truly horrid and i binned the race at jacobs ladder before going further downhill over to crowden/grindslow
well gutted :(
Hello all - very nice to meet some forum faces before the race. I got round ten minutes quicker than last year (a much easier 4.17) stopped once as I was unsure of part of route between Jacobs and Grindslow, and made a poor choice between Grindlsow and Ringing Roger (no not up and down, just not the best path). Ascending was ok (as in I was passing people rather than the other way round), bog trotting was alright, but my descending was crap crap crap (my ankles are nicely swollen today after turning them over so often)...any tips, books, exercises much appreciated.
Great day out; I actually got to see where we running this year (you should consider yourself very fortunate if you live local to such a landscape) and to chat to some other runners and marshalls. A big thank you to all those involved in making the race happen.
Cheers - Raymond
p.s. there were at least two other Brighton based runners in the race (Arena and Phoenix clubs), so I can't even claim the long distance travel award! I'll see if I can persuade some more up for 2009; pictures of this years glorious sunshine and white fluffy clouds should help.
well done everyone & a huge thankyou to the marashalls, organisers & the weather gods :D Had a great day out tho' feeling a bit battered & bruised today
Stolly, sorry to hear you got injured & to miss you at the start & sorry not to meet up with more of you. I kept my head down before hand, mega nervous & worried I might have a repeat of my Pendle disaster (dnf, injured). Great to get my first AL in the bag, looking forward to a few more now :)
How useless are we? I didn't recognise you either! Hope your leg gets sorted quick
Hey Raymond, we finished in the same time. I would have said hello if i'd known who you were....and if i'd recogised you :D
Daz H
I'm intrigued by the speed of the Down and Up option vs the easier round the houses... I was hoping split times would be published, but they're not on the DPFR site. If you've still got your results slip what time did you reach Grindslow and then how long did it take you to get to Ringing Roger?
I'll look at my slip and compare.
Cheers
CH.
crowhill whats your name ??
here are my splits
grindslow knoll arrive 2hrs48 48
ringing roger 3hrs11 47
so it took me 22mins 59 to do the down and up
id say i took 20seconds to have a drink out the stream at the bottom.
was surprised i still finished 14th so i dont think i lost any places
im confused
cant say i could have gone any quicker, the up was a struggle and its rough ground for the first quarter of the climb , no easy choice and you aint got time to really think about it.
like i said Alan Yates of the rucksack club was a big help as he was standing on the path and said you have the right line lad, my thoughts now was that it made the last part of the race more intresting
i now want to know how much extra climb it is on top of the std race stats
andy b cmon work it out ;)
forum anonymity forbids me to tell ;). I'll give you a clue - I usually wear a red and white striped vest with a ram's head on it and we spent a fair bit of the race running fairly close together. Because we were running a similar speed it'll be good to compare the times between grindslow knoll and rr i.e. Down and Up vs round.
Also, I was feeling strong at the end so wasn't hanging around (although I did have to stop to get my bearings - but only for 20 secs or so.)
Unfortunately I thought I had my slip with me but I must have left it at home. I'll take a look at times tonite and get back to you with the comparison.)
Cheers.
[QUOTE=daz h;117050]have you binned those shoes yet
how they got through kit check god only knows:QUOTE]
What was wrong with my shoes... :o
Yes they've now gone in the bin where they should have gone about three weeks after buying them:mad:
On the kitcheck front:
To the best of my knowledge only 4 people turned up with no phone and they were able to borrow one off friends or partners. 2 people turned up with out any windproof/waterproof pants which we were able to aquire some off the marshalls.
Mr G Manhood seemed to be carrying a full telephone exchange.
Strider it was a close finish, you came in 4 seconds behind me. Did I run past you on the finishing field or were you catching me because I couldn't bend my legs for the last 100m, They were like frozen licorice;) ouch
Stolly's report on his thread makes good reading.
Thanks to AndyJ for taking it all on.
Aright Ian, I still owe 50p for the t-shirt!! I'll be getting one of those retro t-shirts that will be available shortly so will send an extra 50p to Richard!!
I wonder how many sheep close to the route are experiencing a sugar rush today? Navigation was no problem at all yesterday - just follow the line of jelly babies.
Still counts as giving you a good kicking Slippery Stones even though you blobbed!
Thanks to those who showed some concern for me when a rather large piece of gritstone came away and scrapped down me shin bone on RR. Shame it happened at the beginning and not at the end but at least it gave me a tailor made excuse for the shabby performance that followed!
Great organisation as ever and great cozzie Darth...suits you.
Thanks for a great day out everyone, it was my first time but I'll be back for more next year (in proper fell shoes, not my Highlanders which I nearly lost in the bog :)) Great marshalls, lovely route and I never realised that Bertie Bassett had such nice legs. Cheers all.
I was too tired to contemplate doing the down & up from Grindslow Knoll, so trailed round the top to Ringing Roger in 22:26 (which also includes stop for a drink).Quote:

Not that trimming 33 secs from your lead made any difference :).
[QUOTE=IanDarkpeak;117068]You passed me on the last part of the zig zag descent, due to my amazingly poor descending skills.... the times I passed people on the ups only to see them again on the downs..... very dispiriting. Something my trail and road running background never prepared me for. :(
P.
Splits are up on the DPFR site.
http://www.dpfr.org.uk/news/2008SkylineSplitTimes.html
DazH - you didn't lose any time going down and up (nor did you gain any time) and it didn't knacker you as you ran the last section as quick as Lloyd!
I wish they would stop updating the resilts. Every time they do I move down a few places!:(
I notice John Stephenson was 2½ minutes in front of me at Grindslow, did the down and up and arrived at Ringing Roger 1½ minutes after me. In fact we met as I was on the way down and he was climbing up.
OK, here is my assessment based on Tracklogs. The route I took round the edge was 2.2 miles and 416ft climb - sounds a lot of climb, but it does go up and down a bit. The route from GK to RR via the bottom of Golden Clough is 1.1miles/630ft, and the direct line GK to RR is 1.0miles/555ft -going via the bottom of Golden Clough takes you slightly further down Grindsbrook clough than the direct line.
So how accurate is all of this????
I don't believe that the elevation model used by any of the digital mapping companies is able to accurately reflect the small ups and downs you encounter when running this sort of race. However the trackpoints recorded by the GPS are not accurate enough to position you accurately on the path - a few feet of error to the right going round the edge could easily reduce your apparent height at one point by 30 ft, and if the next one doesn't have that error, you've climbed 30ft.
I think the round the edge route I've quoted is a substantial overestimate of the climb, whereas the down and up is probably not far out. The overall distances are probably about right.
So what does everyone else think?
Right, I'm only going to race against him on steep downhill only courses from now. Although that might limit my options a bit!
After a quick scan of the results it looks as though Aengus McCullough is the king of the downhills. I think he had the fastest split for both the Win Hill descent & the Ringing Roger one as well.
You must be joking. As you know I tried it twice and decided it was right out of the question.
Hi Swoop,
I was right on the tail of a club mate (lady) at Grindslow Knoll and decided to test the direct line. It took me 8 minutes longer then her! and my legs were like jelly on the last climb up to RR. The down & up looks viable in the comfort of home but for me I'll use the other route in future.
Belated Greetings Folks (Not had internet access these last few days :( )
Anyway - Good to see many of you for a glorious day out at Edale. Was hoping to get inside 4:30 this time round but did start to tire rapidly after Brown knoll / Jacobs ladder, did better last years time by 12 mins though.
Performance of the day has got to be (I hope he doesn't mind me mentioning this) has got to be Swoop for meeting the cut off.
Sorry to hear you having to retire injured Stolly - will you be Ok for the 3P's ?
Great organisation & grub by Darp peak - knew I should have lifted a tray of flapjacks & a T shirt for a quid.
Congrats to you Manhar, Swoop, IanDarkPeak and PlumBum! :D
