Re: The Hebden, 5th January
A good do indeed Merrylegs! Classic views of Calderdale, lashings of mud, dripping sarnies and stollen, cheery marshalls and excellent organization - brilliant!

Re: The Hebden, 5th January
Agree - a grand day out. (But why do my legs hurt so much???)

It was a great event, your legs probably hurt cos it was blinking hard.
I really felt tired today, but glad I made the effort and got myself round.

My legs hurt too and they are merry, maybe i should rename myself hurting merrylegs or merry hurting legs or legs hurting with a merry feeling or maybe i should shut up. Seriously though its always good to make that effort and get round and have that happy tired feeling and a sense of achievement, well done everyone:cool:

Re: The Hebden, 5th January
Well done Ozzy, absolutely phenominal performance. Just how can an ex rugby league player who's 8 foot wide and tall power through an event like that? Your power to weight ratio must be amazing.
Anyway, well done everyone, and special thanks as ever to Alan Greenwood and Carol Engel and of course all the brilliant helpers.
No aches as yet but need more sleep night night!

Yeah, well done Ozzy, met him in the pub after. Just goes to show it does not matter what size or shape you are. Just crack on and get it done, as they say in the Paras;)

Great event really enjoyed it - even the slight navigational errors!
Superb organisation and food by all concerned, much appreciated.

Re: The Hebden, 5th January
Good to see so many of you yesterday. Very enjoyable, though definitely tough ... my legs reminded me that I haven't done any big mileage for a couple of months. Half way through I decided to switch allegiance from FRA to LDWA. This was around the point when, though 'running', I was overtaken by a walker. And it wasn't uphill. :o
Anyone know (roughly) what the ascent was?

On my Fugawi package, i make 5340ft of assent, the most assent of any of the LDWA ones I've done. It's still no excuse though for spending half hour - buns, tea adn getting your feet up, at each check point....or is it me that's loosing the plot??

And well done Chris for your placing! 8th!
That recce must have paid off in the end. Did you manage to get revenge on the cow that attacked you?

Re: The Hebden, 5th January
I use Tracklogs for my mapping and carry a GPS. The ascent on Tracklogs is 4635 feet on the long route and 2711 on the short route. I think the GPS is a bit unreliable because it is counting every little up and down such as stiles and jumping over bogs!! I have never registered over 5000 feet and our intention in stating over 4000 feet was not to put too many people off particularly runners. I think it worked but now the cat is out of the bag. It might well have felt like over 5000 feet but that is another matter.
A word of thanks to all you runners who entered. You bring a real buzz to the event as does your forum. It is truly amazing to us walkers how quickly you get round. Of course you are all LDWA members in the making when you reach the third age or possibly sooner so keep coming back but please try and get your entries in sooner.

Re: The Hebden, 5th January
Thanks to all who helped with the organisation of this fun and very friendly event.
Loved the check points with food and the veggie stew and crumble and custard at end was yummy!!
Really enjoyed myself even though the mud did get a bit much in places. This was my first LDWA event and will be the first of many.
I decided to do these to train for ultra in May (grand union canal 145miles!) and have discovered how much fun they are.
Thanks again for great day out.:D

A fair number of us are LDWA members already!
Thanks for putting on a very enjoyable event. I'm not really bothered whether the ascent was >5000ft or merely >4500ft....
but I don't think you need worry about the amount of ascent putting runners off, as we're mostly masochists in any case.

Re: The Hebden, 5th January
Can you believe the last turn of the day (the right after the good shepherd centre and under the bridge back to the hall) I went completely wrong, went over the road. Down the side of the railway track and ended up on the main car park for the event.
I had to skirt back over the other bridge. Round the front of the main toilets on the main road and back over the other bridge into the hall. reckon that cost me 5minutes.
I would have been under 5 hours as well.

Mind you, the first turn of the day was pretty funny as well. Two runners missed the left after 50 yards and were set to carry on up Cragg Vale. Maybe they'd reccied it as a clockwise route?

Re: The Hebden, 5th January
Alan and Carole
This was the message I tried to email you. Not sure why it didn't get through:
Hi Alan and Carole
Just a quick note to thank you for the super event you organised last Saturday.
The organisation was faultless, the marshalls all lovely and friendly, the food
was delicious and the chocolate cake especially made my day :-)
You did a great job to put on a great day for such a large of people. And I
bet you were more shattered at the end than the people who participated.
Many thanks and see you next year

Re: The Hebden, 5th January
Thanks for your kind comments and as I said before we look forward to seeing you again next year.
I have a pair of Lotto leggings in grey, a pair of Nike trousers in black and a Mountain Range hat in blue which were left behind after the event. Have you noticed yet that you have lost your trousers?

That's why everyone gave me funny looks in the pub afterwards, and i've had a draft round me nether regions ever since. Seriously though the only thing i've lost is my mind, thanks to you Alan and all your team for a good do, good health and see you next year;)

I entered online last week. It's worth getting in early as last year it filled up and a number of people who tried to enter on the day were turned away.
