It's taken me a long time to come round to joining the "NEW" forum. Ask JJ. I feel I've nothing to contribute.
Thanks Socks. Why do I bother ??
Cheers Daz, see you Sunday.

oooooh this is soooo exciting -
i think i'll be there (as long as dom wants to too!) espcially as it's a 'three peaks training course' !
When an organiser close to me couldn't make the "height" criterion for inclusion in the FRA Calendar I told him to count every large stone on the route and add 4 inches for each one. He made the height, his race got included.
He did not broadcast that fact and there is a bottle of Champagne if any Forumite can identify the race, which is now defunct because of hassle when some people got lost.
Race must have been a real challenge after all!
I'm 5'7" and I'm hoping to do the White Holme Circular do I meet the height criteria ?
Looking at the map it seems quite straightforward (in a roundabout way).
From google earth it looks like most of it is on an obvious path.
What surface is it? Should we be wearing fell shoes or not?
Looking forward to this but trying not to get too excited!:)
Swoop the moorland will be very wet up there, though you're right the paths are pretty distinct. I'd definitely wear fell shoes though.
If i've got anything left in my legs from tomorrow in Heaton Park i'm going to have a jog round as i love it up there. If my legs are shot i'll still be around somwhere giving you a shout.
See you tomorrow
Shall we all just run up and down the first hill a couple of times extra to make the height up? If not with the FRA, where would this race be registered? I doubt it could be a trail race as it's not marked and marshalled with drinks stations and Km markers, but apparently it's not a fell race as it doesn't met a specific criteria. It's a damn sight harder than most of the 'fell' races that I did last year. In fact it's on a par with the Puma Derwentwater race which was bloody hard, and held in harsh conditions on exposed ground - with no kit regulations. Bugger... just remembered, technically that wasn't a fell race either... :(
Or perhaps not.
Fell races as listed in the FRA Calendar are those that supposedly meet the FRA criteria. If they don't then they should not be FRA Calendar listed fell races.
No one forced Allan to put his race in the FRA Calendar and no one forced him to lie about the height figures to gain inclusion.
There are several well known "fell" races not listed in the Calendar that survive so if Allan's race is so attractive presumably people would beat a path to his door anyway...?
What next? Can I organise a race round my garden and special plead that my race doesn't quite meet the FRA criteria but I 'd like it to be included in the Calendar, oh and insured by the FRA as well?
Thirty years ago there were only around 40 races in the FRA Calendar. Not many I agree but at least they were fell races and not a tour of my lawns.
jeez , no wonder alan gets cheesed off with it all
he tries to introduce a new race to the calendar which is not easy, gives up his time etc etc, okay criteria should be met but im sure he just really wants to put a race on and give a bit back
no wonder on his website he says it could be his last year :(
im surprised he doesnt stand outside the summit pub and shout bollox to it all.
see you all tomorrow
alan, the words patience and saint spring to mind ;)
I want to organise a fellrace round the valley/woods i live in - you get about 500ft in 2miles - do you think it would make it into the calendar?;)
you have to do the course four times to make it 8m and 2000ft but it would be REALLY confusing for the competitors!
the race will be called the 'gledhow w' as it involves running up and down the same tiny bit of innercity woodland 5 times ! plenty of parking at tesco - infact - they can sponsor it and provide us with tea and cakes after the race, an opportunity for them to contribute to the community perhaps!:D
dont think we can call it a fell race though - daz - we have to call it an 'suburban steep sided offroad non competitive community excercise opportunity' (sponsored by tesco)
yes infact sponsored by tesco and daleside breweries - anyway - sorry for trashing the thread on this tangent - I'm looking forward to the race tomorrow - kind of - it was a really nice warm day topday - so hope tomorrow will be similar - it looks quite open and exposed on the map and i will definatly be taking a map with me as I feel I somehow may be at the back by myself - i dont want to get lost on the moor by myself - is the race actually in yorkshire or lancashire?
Yep, I'll be there. I've got my way through a few beers and the first bottle of wine is being fought to a standstill. Could be good tomorrow (up at 8.30, what!)
I seem to remember doing a similar race last century. Turn around at Stoodley Pike (?), and a run back into especially ordered gale force winds. I was so cold at the end I couldn't even finish my stubby of lager.
It's a bit breezy this morning. I think Swoop might need some ballast.
How was it today?
I was on the hills opposite and the head wind was very strong. Running west was very hard work but I neraly flew going east!
Well the chip butty and soup were very welcome. I enjoyed the race in some masochistic way, head down into the gritted teeth of the wind. It was nice to be on the fells again, and any more climb would have killed me. This was definitely a fell race, and given the time of year and exposure it's always likely to be. Thanks to Stringman for organising it, and his hardy breed of marshals for standing there.
It seemed to be a forumathon today. Coach Clamp kindly blew up at the end and I sneaked past him. It seems that I've been bumping into Wirey Manc for a few years and didn't realise it. Swoop, Breeze, Chris, AP, Daz H, Dominion shouting "come on fat boy" or something, and JJ ensconced in the pub (obviously). All in all, a good day had by all.
A fine bracing morning up on t'moors. Fortunately the cloud level was high enough to let us see where we were going. Just as well because that area was all new to me. The wind was the biggest enemy today and made it a hard struggle for a lot of the race.
I'd just like to echo Pudgy's comments about the race organisation, hats off to Stringman and team. Good to see plenty of forum folk there. Now, after being on the receiving end of a good hiding from Pudgy for the second time in as many days, I've just got to figure out how to get in front of him next time.
I was another forumite there today - I was the one wearing the silly hat with sheep on (I mistakenly thought it was part of the official Calder Valley kit).
Really enjoyed the race, and especially the fact that so much of the course was runnable. I'm used to most routes up there being lumpier. Generally, I lurch about falling over at irregular but frequent intervals, living up to my forum name.
The wind was certainly a bit gusty - it looked like the tide was coming in on the far side of White Holme Reservoir. Nevertheless, it was a particularly fine morning of muck and heavy breathing, and I managed to get round with both ankles intact, which is always a bonus.
Well done Stringman.
BTW, I'm afraid I've trashed another of your nice plastic numbers - the wind ripped my safety pins through the holes and I had to perform emergency repairs en route. Wish I'd been carrying an industrial stapler.
Ran the race today & just got home after visiting family- I'm cream crackered!! Despite the "banter" on the forum b4 the race, it really was quite tough (& fast) mostly due to the wind and wet bogs everywhere! having read edam's pre-race posts I hope he/she enjoyed the race today as much as I did, big thanks again to Allan, Linda & Co. for organising/marshalling. If it's on next year, highly reccommended alternative to standing in front of an industrial sized hair dryer....
yes a very testin run today
certainly a fell race, fell in the bog twice, thanks to stringman for the race, a nice view of stoodley pike gave me some idea as to were i was.
fair play to the marshall for standin in that wind.
a good forumite turnout, nearly collided with a peacock comin through the farm yard at the end:) and then promptly fell over in the shit after( the peacock was def laughing:(
my legs arnt talkin to me at the moment so i must have had fun, made a nice longish run in preparation for edale
Well done all you guys and girls for running in such conditions.
If it helps, Standing on the balcony of Stoodley Pike (on the way back home) was much much grimmer than marshalling next to the route. !Not sure of the results, but here are the results where I stood above Warland drain, was that about halfway? Have emailed them to Stringman.
Shame I couldn't make it to the Summit for prizegiving etc (walking would have probably got me there far too late) but as my local, the Fox and Goose has Youngs Winter Warmer, I ended up in the proper ale pub!

Thanks to all the organisers and helpers. I found the wind very hard work on the way out on the Pennine Way. My quads were screaming from yesterday's XC champs. Was glad to get round even if it was near the back. Well done to Mad on beating me again. Can't say the same for Danbert Noshow!:D
yes i too found it very hard work today - although those paths are very runnable and distinct - it makes you think what makes them so well defined, who's walking up there everyday to keep it such a well worn route i wonder. i feel more tired after a race than i can remember for a long time, well done on your fall daz - i fell real heavy on the track about 200m before the farm and thought as i went through the field after the yard - 'I'm glad i didnt fall here' - i think the peacock was still giggling!! actually - at least it would have hurt less falling into soft think squlechy (smelly) mud!.
BTW - Clive you have me to thank for not keeping you out there too long as I was 'last 'man' through' at 11.34. Thanks! That's actually made me feel better about nearly coming last = one chap went the wrong way and started to go round the reservoirs again - so actually came in after me - but he will have run about 14miles today not 12, i tried to wave him back but he was determined to continue on his second loop. shows he enjoyed it though - thanks string man - a really worthwhile run - very tiring but excellent!
On that last point, I am slightly confused - I have measured it on Memory Map and it comes out as 11.9 miles and 1190ft. Can anyone else confirm or deny these figures? The figures that Stringman gave made me think, because I measured the 'Race to the Summit' route as 875ft in 4.3 miles, and having run the route today there was obviously a few more feet to add to that even though the loop around the resevoirs is obviously relatively flat. Anyway, whatever the figures, the route is a good work out for this time of year. Lets hope it continues.
Sounds ok to me. So 12 miles, 1200' is just about spot on.
The run up to the White House has a lot of up and down (repeated at the end) and
it was quite a drag up to the Pennine Way to the point where we retraced our steps.
Thanks Danbert. I'm sure you realised I was only joking (as usual!)
Good race. Definately counts as a fell race in winter months. Some people are so pedantic.
There was a Manx Fell Runner in today's race. His name was Allan C.
It could have been a misprint!:)
