Just recently bought a pair of these and am well pleased up to now. I’ve done two runs in them so far, the second one being a 17 miler over Whernside and Ingleborough on Saturday, and they’ve been great.
Compared to my previous Mizuno Wave Harriers (which are great shoes that I’d recommend to anybody) they are a bit more ‘clumpy’ with a stiffer sole but for long training runs over mixed ground they are excellent and the stiffer construction is probably a bit more protective (your feet can take a bit of a pounding in the Wave Harriers after 4 hours or so).
The other great thing about the Cheviots is the very aggressive, grippy sole, which was a boon on the muddy bits of the route on Saturday. I was a bit worried they’d be treacherous on wet stone slabs but they don’t seem any worse than the Wave Harriers in that respect (ie – not great but not bad either).
For less than £30 they represent top value for money, provided they last a few months (which is the best I’ve ever had out of a pair of expensive Inov8s)
Hi,
I wrote this review to go on the More Mile website but it wouldn’t fit into their parameters. Also, I wrote it before I’d read some of the excellent reviews already posted on this thread. Anyway, here’s my two penn’th…
The first thing to say is these shoes are obviously a fell shoe as opposed to a trail shoe - the extremely aggressive tread let's you know that (had seen reviews elsewhere where people had only done light trail in them). I just did the Eccles Pike Race circuit (about 3.4m 1,000ft ascent) in them in wet and muddy conditions. They gripped in the mud and wet grass and even coped with wet tree root and rock well (I'd say nothing's 100% grippy on wet rock and tree root but these were in the 90%s. I bought these Cheviots hoping they would be better than my old Addidas Swoop in this respect and the Cheviots didn't let me down.)
The shoe was instantly comfortable and remained that way for the 36mins it took me to run Eccles Pike (bit slow I know!). The rubber rand round the front meant that not as much water came in as did with my old Addidas, which was nice. The nice new big aggressive tread did make me feel like I was running on tractor tyres on road but let's face it they're not meant for that and that will no doubt lessen with wear. The last, or mid sole area, looks very much like an old pair of Inov8 Mudrocs I used to have but (fingers crossed for the future) the padding around the Achilles’ heel area looks a lot better and won't rub like they did ( - those Inov8s actually made me bleed!)
So, in summary, these are a really comfortable, really grippy fell shoe (probably most akin to Inov8's MudClaw), which at £30 are less than half the price and they are designed by a British company. You could do a lot worse than buy a pair of these for your next fell shoe. (Having said that I haven't done hundreds of miles in them, yet!)
Well, on the basis of the reviews on here I have taken a punt on a pair. Got a 'free' fleece and pair of socks for 29.99 plus 4.95 postage. Also got a further 10% off with the code posted previously. I haven't done a proper fell run for ages and have been using New Balance 749s for road running and light trail running so will be interested to see how these More Mile shoes compare to the NB 101s I was using at the start of the year when I take to the hills again, hopefully on Saturday if they arrive in time. the NB 101s have brilliant grip on grass but are deadly on wet concrete/rocks, etc.
Anyone any thoughts on sizing, do these tend toward the large or the small, look like a bargain for training.
If you think MT101s have a good grip on grass, wait until you try the Cheviots! The 101 has an OK trail sole but the Cheviot has a proper, aggressive fell sole, rivalling the Inov-8 Mudclaw. They are not great on wet slabs or rocks but no worse than most other fell shoes.
Size-wise I bought the same UK10.5 I’ve had in Wave Harriers and Inov-8s and they seem fine. My only comment is that the end of the shoe is a bit ‘flat’ (square) so your toes can make contact if you don’t have them laced tightly enough or if you have feet like Sideshow Bob.... The Wave Harriers have a little bit more length (tiny difference though)
well the shoes arrived and out the box I have to say I was well impressed with the quality of them and how aggressive the sole tread is. I ordered a size 8. I need 8.5 in NB MT101 and 749 trail shoes which fit me quite snugly. The Cheviots in a size 8 have plenty of room for me and I would say they are a generous size 8.
I got a pair of more mile socks and a long sleeved 'fleece' (microfleece?) and used the 10% discount code so the whole lot came to around 32 quid. The socks are good quality and I was well chuffed with the top - I thought it would be rubbish but it is very good. I wore the fleece and the shoes to a cyclocross race on sunday and while it wasn't very muddy I could feel the shoes stick to slippy wet grass slopes like shit to a blanket.
Looking forward to getting up into the Campsie Fells on Saturday morning to try them out proper. Hope this review helps - I wouldn't hesitate in recommending them and have no affiliation to the company or the shop that sell them.
oh, and the fleece is excellent as well. Very thin and lightweight but I wore it without a base layer on Sunday when the temperature was in single figures and I didn't notice feeling either too hot or cold which I guess is perfect, right? It is also very comfortable against the skin, didn't make me sweat and seems to have good quality stitching and reflective trim as well.
I'm definitely a convert to More Mile gear now - think i'll try their cycling clothing as well - can't go wrong with a cycling jersey for a tenner
I'm fairly certain I stood next to someone wearing these shoes at the start of one of the races I did at the weekend. They looked much more 'felly' than I thought
Has anyone used these, and Roclite 295s, and can give a rough comparison? Size/fitting etc.
Quite impressed with these, they do feel cheap. But they are effective, toe box is a little odd but comfy enough otherwise.
Think I may actually record my mileage and see how they do.
First run in mine today, and I was impressed too. At least as good as a Mudclaw, and possibly with more potential for longer distances, making it an alternative to the Wave Harrier for long trails when it's on the muddy side. In damp conditions it could perhaps even be a Fellsman shoe.
Startfitness were great as well: I got free socks and an excellent warm top thrown in. The top didn't arrive with the order, but customer services were easy to reach, apologised and sorted it out. That was in complete contrast to my recent experience with Field and Trek, who were useless and from whom I'll not buy again.
my only reservation was going to be their durability
but I have now done 170 miles in my first pair of Cheviots and they are bearing up remarkably well
all of those miles have been either training runs in Lakes/Snowdonia or "proper" fell races
the surface/cosmetic trim is coming adrift (but who cares?)
but the uppers are showing very little sign of wearing through
the "join" between the uppers and the soles looks good as new
the studs are wearing down a bit, but nowhere near as much as my Inov8 Mudrocs would've done by now
Using mine for easy training runs and there working a treat, not as good as Mudclaws, but certainly punching well above there weight.
Comfy and grippy, sold!
Happy with mine for training, just done 11 more muddy miles and no probs...the free socks and shorts are ok too.
I bought a pair at the stall that was set up at the 'Withins Skyline'.
I've not tried them properly yet, & had intended saving them for running to work, when it snows, as they're cheaper to ruin than my (birthday pressie) Mud-Claws - the salt dried out & split the rand on my last pair of 330s
I may try them on one of my local footpath/woodland runs on my days-off this week, to see how they do
I wear UK 9 in Roclite 295's and purchased Cheviots in the same size by mail order. The sizes and fit are very close, if you wear your Roclite's a little large as I do for long distance trails, you might possibly go 1/2 a size smaller on the Cheviots for the fells, but if in doubt go the same size as the Roclite 295 and you'll not be wrong.
I got a pair from my local supplier who happens to live next door but one! I've always liked mudclaws once they had been worn in for a few weeks - initially my first pair caused horrendous back of heel blisters as I wear orthotics. These seem to have less of a problem in that area with the Cheviots. Ran XC in them on Saturday then yesterday a 12 mile run over Great Hill. I didn't feel confident as they slipped on the wet paving slabs between Great Hill and Spittlers where the temperature must have been heading to only a degree or two above freezing (it was about 4pm) - may have been as bad with Mudclaws or anything else (Roclites may have been best combination). I didn't really notice at first but they do seem a slightly bigger fit which I remedied by adding extra insoles that were spare in the cupboard. Mudclaws are fine but at £80 a pair that wear out inside a year, they make a mockery of (fell)running being a cheap sport! If I'm happy with them after a year, £30 will have been a bargain.
I thought that they are only available through Start Fitness!?
Tried them earlier this afternoon on my usual 'xc'/footpath/bridleway route.
As with everyone else, I was impressed with the grip, but they're not the most flexible of shoes.
I was impressed after stopping every so often at the really claggy bits to look at how they'd cleared/left an impression, & was more than satisfied. although for mixed terrain like I still prefer my usual Roc-Lite 315's
If anyone's interested, they're being sold at an even better price just now!!

50 miles in and no complaints from me. Just orderingf another pair.
An ever increasing number of converts in my two clubs.
Are you listening Inov8?
(doubts it)
I've just come across these shoes on Sport Pursuit, interestingly going for £23.70 when they're priced at £19.95 on the Start Fitness website (here).
Just wondering if anyone's got any added opinions after over a year's worth of use? Did they fall apart after a few months or are they still going strong?
Is the mk1 identical to the Running Bear Ground Control? They look the similar on photographs; if so why is the Ground Control so much more expensive?
Quite a few recent opions here http://forum.fellrunner.org.uk/showt...hlight=cheviot
