I am doing the 100 next year too!
With the BG done in 2012, it had to be the L100 in 2013 for me. It looks like there'll be quite a few familiar faces on the starting line.
The only sections I've done so far are Braithwaite to Dalemain (then ran to Rheged and got the bus back). I borrowed some Hoka Mafetes and, on the whole, loved them. Next time I'd need half a size bigger ( see earlier post somewhere about half sizes ) as the toe box is a little too small for most feet apparently.
I'm up for big reccies on the course as well as the usual BG reccies.
Coniston here I come....I can't wait.
ps derbytup..did you get my PM?
I wish this was in a couple of weeks time. I'm actually feeling reasonably fit at the moment and would like to get on with it. Having said that I'm going to need eight or nine months to decide which shoes to wear :closed:
I will be running the Lakeland 100 for Cancer Research UK as just before I got my comformation e-mail through me and my wife got some bad news about a very close family member and thought it would be a great way to raise the profile a little more. A good wat to keep me mottivated in training and keep me going on the day.

I was wondering are we allowed to get kit like new shoes, clothes from a helper on the way around the 100.?
I don't think you're allowed to receive anything en route
You can drop a bag at the half way point:
"The Lakeland100 starts at 6.00pm on Friday July 26th 2013 in Coniston and the maximum time allowed for the event is 40 hours (10:00am Sunday final finish time). The event will be very well supported, food and drink will be available at each checkpoint and details of each will be provided in advance. At registration you will be allowed to hand a bag (we will provide a specific numbered bag) to the organisers which can be collected at the Dalemain Estate checkpoint, anything you leave in this bag will then be returned to the finish at Coniston. This will be the only point where you can access your own food and equipment, it is against race regulations and the spirit of the event for personal supporters to meet you on the route and provide outside assistance which other competitors may not be able to access."
Ah! I hadn't thought about the drop bag at Dalemain!
I have completed the L50 twice now, and support from outsiders on route is a definite NO!!! And could result in DQ. As mentioned by someone else for the 100 you do have a drop bag at Dalmain and its up to you what you leave in there, many people put another pair of trainers as well as full change of kit, extra food to carry etc...
What about Piggy Backs Ash....i'll need one :w00t:
Having a crack at the 100 this year myself and beginning to have doubts about my shoe choice.
La Sportiva XC. They have done me well over the Vegan welsh 3k's the other week and also a 45 mile Exmoor ultra earlier in the year but im beginning to worry about the sections of hard surface on the LL100...
All that said its very late to change my plan now and the only other shoes I have that are worn in and in reasonable nick is a pair of inov8 285's.
Gonna stick a set of poles that I have never used at Dalemain just in case im a broken down wreck by that stage
Im not sure if I should start with my lighter and thinner soled salomon sence ultra's first then swich to something more roomy and softer new ballence leadville's at half way or just go with the more cumfy ones for the whole thing. What half is the harder on the feet..?
Its all hard on the feet Chris. Leadville's from the start for me. Really don't know how people get round in minimalist shoes.
Thanks, I do like the Leadville's. Are trekking poles allowed, just thinking for things for my drop bag.
Poles allowed Chris, not got any myself tho. Toothbrush and paste going in my drop bag.
It's certainly the cumulative effect that takes its toll. Got round in x-talon 212s last year. I changed pairs at Dalemain. I also changed socks 3 or 4 times which helped to keep the feet slightly drier than would have been the case. My lack of skill on slippery rock means I needed more grip than most.
I would suggest going with what you know and trying your best to keep your feet dry. I also have a little home made foot lotion remedy. Designed by my mother-in-law. She's a swimming teacher and uses it to good effect for healing cracked heels etc. I was not so sure at first but as I'm almost 300% sure she doesn't read this, I'm more than happy to say it worked a treat. Had cracked heals in build up to L100 last year from effects of long wet training runs. Cleared it up and along with regular sock changes got me through with no feet trouble anyway.
let me know if anyone wants the recipe.
Totally agree. The terrain is pretty tough underfoot for both halves of the race. I see a lot of people on the FB page thinking of changing shoes now - crazy.
I'd say, if in doubt go for better cushioned - you'll have 24-36 hrs on them.
Personally - Salomon Speedcross :)
I'll be using last seasons Speedcross 2. Slightly knackered but just that bit better than the 3's I've been using. Never got a blister in 2's but getting them a little with 3's. So 2's will be out of retirement!!
Competitor notes are here: http://www.lakeland100.com/downloads...rnotes2013.pdf
Yes i find the Speedcross2 a bit wider but the 3 more stable and better underfoot
Was just having a bit of a last minute wobble I think. Firmed up my mind now on the La Sportiva XC. Have done most of my training and all my long off road runs in them without any issues.
My only concern was that down here in the south its now bone dry and the trails are as hard as tarmac. Anyhow La Sportivas it is and never before used poles at Dalemain for 'just in case'.
 hehe. I've bought some Black Diamond light weight poles "just in case" and had a play with them - didn't like it much - they'll be going in my drop bag too. I've got visions of slithering up Fusedale propelled only by the poles, something like the Terminator when he's had his lower half shot off
An interesting image lolQuote:

Went for some multicoloured Mountain kings myself but hope not to use them, very pretty mind you lol
Seriously thinking of wearing road shoes for the 100, going for comfort and sacrificing some grip. It's not like I'll be moving fast over anything tricky! Done 3 of previous 4 ultras in road shoes and not had foot trouble. Last year did L50 in Salomons and got blisters. Maybe due to wet feet, I will have a few pairs of spare socks to help keep the plates of meat dry!
Up for a bit of a recce this week :)
I've got some of those Black Diamand ultra poles too, hardly used since I got them .... I tried them again this weekend at Osmotherley and they definitely make a difference on the climbs, the thing I don't like is not having your hands free for food, drink, nav, scratching arse etc. If I could work out a way of quickly storing them out of the way I'd be much happier, my Saloman pack has got what are meant to be restraining straps for them but to be honest it's a proper faff and not worth it.
