Hows your training going Tahr ?
Have you reccied leg 2 yet ?

Hi Will
Training has been a bit frustrating to be honest, I was hoping to have recced 3 or 4 legs by now, but have only managed 1 and a bit, this has mainly been due to bad weather on the weekends I have been able to get to the Lakes.
I managed to get part way round leg 2 with Vespa last week before we decided that discretion was better that valour and headed back. In truth I wasn’t really recceing the route above Clough head as every time I raised my head the wind justblew ice particles into my eyes.
I am looking at getting back down next weekend for another crack at leg 2. Phsically no real injuries as yet to bother me, I have my entry in for the Glasgow to Edinburgh Ultra at the begining of April, bit flat but it will be time on my legs.

We're over leg 3 or possibly 1 next Saturday if your over then
I'll mostly be doing weekdays initially (maybe a couple of weekend days nearer the time)
I usually just pick the day with the best weather forecast
hoping to do one this week actually
Monday & Tuesday horrifically wet
Wednesday horrifically windy
so looking like Thursday or Friday atm...
I'm up there too. Up for anything except leg 1.
Thanks for all the offers of company on the Legs, I will have a chat with my mate and see which day is best, of course the weather may make that choice for us nearer the end of the week, so I will let you know.
I can only really get down to the Lakes at weekends due to work.

Last weekend in Feb was first trip to Lakes in 2011. No need to get too obsessed about recceing in january and bear in mind 1) there are only five legs 2) many BG'ers are so knackered by say half way round leg 4 that navigation is the last thing on their mind 3) leg 5 doesn't take a huge amount of learning
Just get out in the hills and practice walking up steep slopes and running down similar
hi stolly were over leg 3 i think on saturday as we dont know it and done leg 1 and 2 a bit lately but if our plans change we happilly jump onboard were up next weekend i think too if you find yourself after company and a day out would be good to put a face to a name over coming weeks
sorry nigel meant to say if you fancy leg 3 youre more than welcome mate
Thanks old un but I don't think I'll have time for a leg 3, especially at this time of year. It could be 7 to 7.5 hours (maybe longer if the weather gets dodgy?) start to finish at recce pace.... and you then end up in Wasdale when you finish :). I do know it pretty well though and I'm sure I'll be up for another leg 3 outing in a couple of months time.
Hmmm Thats true may end up doing an out and back , will no doubt get to have a day out soon and meet :)
I'm up for leg 3 (any leg but leg 1, really) but it is a ballsache unless either a car is left in Wasdale the night before or a circular route is designed. I still have nightmares of doing leg 3 (with 2 cars) and spending more time driving than on foot on the hills. How about something like up from Dunmail as far as Bowfell and then down into Langdale, and up at New Dungeon Gill and back across to the start? I'm not looking at a map - is that too far? I'm sure somebody will have a better idea.
I could be up for a shortened leg 3 but maybe we could have a car already parked in Langdale? The "back across to the start" bit mentioned by Nigel looks a good trek on its own :)

Weather forecast doesn't look too bad at the minute either
Yes, even as I was typing it I thought it was too far. A car in Langdale sounds good, though. If we took two cars to the ODG first thing and left one there we could do leg 3 until Bowfell (perhaps a bit more?) and then come down the band to the valley - couple of pints in the ODG and back to Dunmail.
... and if I'd looked at the map that's exactly what you'd drawn!
...... and then Sunday I was going to go out from Keswick up Catbells, High Spy and over to the path up Dalehead (down into Honister for a quick cuppa - optional) and then back to Keswick along leg 5 route.
Hi Nigel, stolly, that sounds like a good plan, at the moment it's only me and old un coming up from Hull on Saturday, so plenty of room in the car to get get back to Dunmail. It would be good to meet up with you guys. As old un said we've seen a lot of leg 2 lately and only done a bit of leg 3 in pretty poor conditions so we're keen recce at least the first part of it.
Bill
The start of leg 3 is pretty straight-forward, so another recce option is to park in Langdale, straight up to Stickle Tarn and on to Sergeant Man, then the BG route as far as you want.
There was a multi-forumite recce early last year and we went as far as Sacfell Pike, then took the Corridor Route down to Styhead before heading back to Langdale via Esk Hause and Angle Tarn. A good day out. I think Derby Tup and I did the same sort of run the previous year too. It's a good way to get the meat of leg 3 done without having to worry about leaving cars or the inevitable out-and-back over the easy section from Steel Fell. It'd be feasible to go as far as Wasdale and then climb up to Styhead and back on to Langdale.
Ha! Yeah, having a massive great chocolate cake waiting at the end of the run is recommended. https://twitter.com/i/#!/geoffcumbri...com%2Fo0k8yhzj
Sounds like an even better plan and still means I get a couple of Guinness in the ODG. Thanks Geoff.
Wow that's some cake!! I've still got some Guinness birthday cake left if you need an excuse to come out...;-)
Depending on where you are based or is easier to drive to, you can park in Borrowdale and head up Greenup Edge to join the route just after Calf Crag. Then do as much as you want, or weather dictates, before heading back down to Borrowdale. Once past Great End you are heading away from the car somewhat but it's not too bad even if you drop down to Wasdale as the path back over Styhead is steady going.
Okay. Let me know what the crack is - I'm happy to run from Dunmail and down to a parked up car in Langdale from Bowfell or take one of the other routes from Langdale, whatever is preferred. What about a start time too?
hey bill ,simon I would be up for this also let me know details ,now im recovered from problems, no racing stolly:thunbdown:
Hi Mate
I know were you are coming from, but if I am running with nil vis’ and on snow I am not really getting to know the route???
It takes me about 1:30 hours to get down to the BG ground depending, so if I stop local I can run for a extra 2 to 3 hours in character building weather on “my own hills” and save some fuel money, but no good pasties in Keswick mind.:o
If there is space and no objection I might tag along with you chaps on Saturday.

bill what do you mean 1 car at this rate mate we will be needing more I also know that there is large group of bg,rss going from borrowdale yha as well over leg 3
We could hire a mini bus Roy:wink:
morning all, looks like saturday could be a another forumite recce then. havnt had chance to look iver map and work start time out, but dunmail is 3 to 3 1/2 hr drive for us hence start from there for a day trip and langdale would prob be another 30mins im guessing so a start time would be around 10ish for us if we leave at 6ish or 9/930 from dunmail. some intresting sugguestions for a day out have come up though and will have a pour over map tonight and a chat with bill and see whats doable for us but hopefully hook up with a few of you you guys too theres even a chance mr stu little may be out too ;-) any other sugguestions welcome as our total knowlege of leg 3 is steel fell is steep and its claggy on top when we go up there
Why don't we start from Dunmail as originally planned (at say 10 or 9:30). I will get to Old Dungeon Gill half an hour earlier with my car (which could fit 4 passengers or 5 at a squidge) for the return journey. If need be one other driver could park there too with a third driver picking us up to whiz over to Dunmail. I personally love the climb up Steel Fell and it'd be a shame to miss it. Also that stretch to Calf Crag and Seargeant Man is really good for all sorts of reasons whereas all the boulders and crap after Bowfell I can quite happily miss out :)
Also Dunmail to Bowfell on a 23 hour schedule is something like 3 hours 20 or so and we'll still have to descend the band so we'll be out a good 4 to 4.5 hours if we're tootling along quite nicely. We could always add in Esk Pike if we feel like it and then descend to Langdale via Angle tarn?
Or carry on over Crinkle Crags and Pike o' Blisco to get more fell work in:o
Any of that sounds good to Stolly were just happy to be out and 23/24 hr pace sounds good to us so we can get a few bearings as were going along just looked on route planner and it gives abit quicker travel time than we thought so could maybe do anywherestart will have proper look tonight as im on a scaffold at mo :-) but we're Defo up for it and the more the merrier Tahr if it fits with your plans. And do you mean the hill or the weather martyn. :-) but yes I'm sure you're right mate or hope so anyhow made peace with Fairfields over last couple of weeks and had a couple of goes on steel fell coming off seat sandal so getting there  stu passed his regards on last night too was telling how you've been s help with the Garmin.
