Jodg, he finished 17 seconds behind you, do you remember running with him over the short course?

Being very basic in the computing terms and even worse with forums, I will post photo's when I work out how to do it.
Any help / suggestions (constructive) gratefully received.
The 2hrs 29 mins for the long route I am going to assume, unless someone can confirm different, that the guy registered for long but ran the short.
Got decent photo of you, jodg, at the finish.
IanDarkpeak, grid reference for the LTP near 1894 stone was about 12.6 metres out.
Try better next time.
Took Brent on Sunday morning to LTP, hand stone on Barrow Stones and to the source of the river Derwent.
A glorious morning out.
You're complaining about a grid ref being out 12 m out:eek: Perhaps the modern technology you were using was 12 m out!!!:D
I might try for the Source tommorrow and some other LTP's there are two between Barrow and Grinah
Spoke to Rob and he will post some pics on our site, Perhaps he'll add yours...

Entries are now being taken for the 2008 "Grin and Bear It" which will be run on Saturday 4th October
The event is run by 'Three-Six-Zero' the funding group for Woodhead Mountain Rescue Team who will be manning the checkpoints.
It incorporates a 15 mile, 1950ft fell race and a 23 mile challenge walk/run.
There is an improved route for the 23 miler I believe but I'll confirm that tonight and post tommorrow.

Ian
I sent my entry form off on Friday, i'm looking forward to it.
I've mentioned it a few times on http://www.fetcheveryone.com and I think its one of the fell races in the Handsworth Roadhogs club Championship too. So should get a bit of support from there.
Im going to have a crack at this. I dont race this sort of distance usually and i think i could do with mileage, plus i want to do Pendle later in the year.
I'll see if i can drag someone with me.:D
Posted off my entry fee a few weeks ago and was looking forward to it having ran it for the first time last year.
Yesterday found out that I have to do a pickup from M'ster airport on the morning so might well miss out..... :(
IanDP - I take it the 15mile route remains unchanged?
What's it like under foot?
Is it going to be Fell, Trail or Road shoe terrain?
Cheers
Hi IDP,
It's a shame this clashes with the Long Mynd Hike otherwise I'd be there. I did this a few years ago (different route) and quite enjoyed its challenges, especially the man-eating bogs on the top. :D
Nick.
I've got another question. Is the route marked, or does it require navigation?
Cheers
Hi Jan Yes just the same.
Hmmm! Yes!
Path through woods and up cut gate is rocky or good path with patches of wet stuff. from there it's the Derwent edge. Definitely fell, lots of bogs as it's been quite wet recently. After you cross the woodhead and the brief bit of road you run on trail (save something for this as it is fast and easy to pick up places. Finish is through woodland and then good paths.
I Would probably runit in well studded trail shoes. Definitely not road shoes
The first part is quite easy to navigate. there are marker poles along Derwent edge after Outer edge but if the clag is down a compass will be needed to keep you on track as they may be beyond clag visibilty.
There will be plenty of team members on the course acting as marshalls etc.
The only fiddly bits are after crossing the Woodhead and in the woods near the end but these should be marked but keep an eye on your map and you should be fine. If you were thinking of the long course make sure you take the correct route when they split. There is a high route and a low route.
If we havent posted any one by Bull clough (the dip between Cutgate and OE) go round or go under!!!;)
Any thing else you need to know.
Seems like I'm back on for this one as plans have changed! Hope to see a fair few of you there. I'm trying to rustle up some support to get a few more runners interested. :)
Been Poorly Sick with injured knee, which put and end to my 3Peaks, so haven't raced as much really. then was busy with work ....oh woe is me , but have been getting in some good work on the bike and am back running as well now, so am looking forward to the grin and bear it and some other races . see you in October
Just got my route description for the long walk/run. There's no path marked on the map between 2 (Featherbed Moss) and the road. Is there one of the ground? They mention the cairn several times so I guess that's important! Looks nice route.
When I did this last year, they had to pull a few walkers out of the mud. At one point a very kind and well-organised marshall had put his rucksack down to indicate the line we should take from his checkpoint to avoid the bogs.
It's certainly wetter this year than last year. Lets hope for a dry spell or the bog monsters may be well fed.
If you check out google earth it's pretty obvious. Its funny as on some maps this path is marked. The path continues past the cairn and down to the upper Derwent valley via the Sheperds meeting stones. a lovely quiet arera.
T'was I indeed. Hope to be there again this year as it's the best fun ;)
I ran round the course last week end and I went up Cutgate tonight. Derwent Edge is very wet and heavy going but wasn't as boggy as I thought it was going to be. The Bogmonster was looking very hungry however!
Cut gate is a doddle now as it has all been relaid making for a faster climb.
Thanks Ian. Will have a look at google earth.
Only two weeks to go and the week dry weather has started to dry out Derwent Edge...sort of.;)
It's a good race so if you haven't sent your entry yet then get it sent off.
some not so good news.
Whilst out on a training excercise WMRT search Dog Bryn was involved in an awful accident resulting in a very severe injury to one of it's legs. The result is around 12-18 months convelesence and a vets bill around £4,000 which the handler is having to pay.
The team have rallied round and have already raised a substantial amount of this. One of the team members sons has offered to have his legs waxed by his older sister for charity and for your pleasure (and if he can hold his nerve) will have this done at the Grin and Bear It  So if you hear a young man screaming in agony to the sounds of a giggling girl please be generous.
Bryn is a very experienced search dog and has been called out all over the country by police and other rescue teams not just on the local hills.
Ian
Aye, was out around Mickleden and Cut Gate this am and still wet in places. Didn't meet the bog monster today but I sense he's lurking just below the surface...:p
Poor critter, hope he recovers and is well looked after. Was he not insured by PetPlan or some such then?
I'd go for fell shoes every time - as IDP has said, the climb out of Langsett is a well trodden path with loose rocks/stones then you're into open peat land - very springy after dry weather BUT very boggy in parts after rain..there are some deep bogs too!
In the main the last few miles are steady paths and trail, but I would recommend trail shoes and DEFO not road shoes.
Yep, if the clag is in you'll defo need to navigate...but on a clear day like today you can see Manchester..well...;)
Hey Bluebike, why, errm, "Bluebike"?
Quite a lot of runners out there today, not to mention the ramblers and MTBers. Maybe there was a recce on, or just plain enjoying the sunshine. Glorious day for it! :D
I was up Cut gate this am ...9ish and found the going very good, ran round res' and up Howden Clough, Margery and Outer to pick old Mickleden back to Langsett... have never seen so many mountain bikers...but like a peleton! I must say the advent of pavements here there and every where is really changing usage in the last 5 years!
Not that open country is just for fell runners..
Maybe Cutgate and Mickleden Edge ought to be a no - no for fell races due to the erosion etc....I remember the change of route for Mickleden as a result of this in years past.
From what I understand it is very difficult to insure search dogs as by definition they go in to hazardous areas and so are high risk. I believe we have found some sort of scheme but it has only partial cover although I don't know the details.
Lets hope for some clag then;)
BlueBike, do you run for Penistone?
I run where I can ....;)..up hill and down dale! :)
..and tomorrow... I will be running out from Horwich..

The wife's a vet and she says that none of the insurance companies will offer cover for working dogs for injuries incurred whilst working, be it sheepdogs, guide dogs or rescue dogs...
Can't do Grin n Bear It, I'll probably be out on the Sunday at Hope (like you Ian?). Get a donations box on the go there and I'll contribute
Are there still places available, I could do with a trot round at the back maybe.
Toying it with it myself Graeme. Hmmm not sure if I could manage a 23 mile stroll more than a 15 mile run!
Ian..... I really am quite shit at navigation - as much as I try  Am I going to get lost if I come up on my own and more importantly will you have some flap jack and jelly babies in the back of your boot at a random junction?!! It just wouldn't be the same without it! ;)
