Re: All LDWA events thread.
Sorry but this is a bit random.........but
does anyone know anything about the walk referred to by this chap here
http://www.nicholasrhea.co.uk/yorkshire/crosses.html
its a stone crosses walk over the north york moors and he says its 53 miles.
I read a little booklet about it in a library I think,,,,years ago and it really interested me.

I've now got an entry form but they dont appear to be widey available. Its organsied locally by 15th Airdale Scout Group. Let me know if anyone want any more details
How much is the entry for this race Chris so I can get it sent off. I did the Hebden Bridge which was great. Two pieces of really nice chocolate cake at the last check point which was very civilised.
Moo, I'm not the Kevin from Darwen. Sorry to be such a long time commenting on that. My new years resolution was to cut down on technology time. So I ended my internet access at home and only use it occasionaly at work.
The Cumbria Ldwa is doing the three rings of Shap in June which is three separate rings around the fells. The rings are 18 miles, 24 miles or 20 miles and you can do one, two or three rings. The three rings which total 62 miles has to be done in 26 hours. So for people who are thinking of doing the BG it's a good test to see what you've got. The website is http://www.ldwa.org.uk/lgt/web_page.php?c=7&p=26 I'd like to try the BG in 2008 and so getting in these ldwa long distances is a great way of training. I don't underestimate the BG though. After Hebden Bridge I got home at 6pm and was with tired legs having a cup of tea. It occured to me that if doing the BG that day the runner would still only be 10 hours into the run. Thousands of feet of ascent to come and another 14 hours on your feet. Very sobering thought.
I hope to see other forumites at the Rombalds if I get my entry in ok.

Re: All LDWA events thread.
I can recommend the Trollers Trot Sat 3rd March as a good tough walk/run. Last year there were quite a few runners and I suspect there will be more this year. I took 4:30 (although I am sure it was advertised as 26 last year) and was around 15-20th. The meal is good at the end but I could not the face hotdogs at the penultimate checkpoint.
Details below
A tough 24ml walk from Upper Wharfedale Scholl, Threshfield in the picturesque Yorkshire Dales National Park, via Threshfield Moor, Winterburn Reservoir, Rylestone Moor, Barden Tower, Trollers Ghyll & returning to Grassington via Burnsall & along the banks of the River Wharfe. 3047ft of climb. Tracklogs route available via email. Start 8.00 am. Entry £8 (£9 on day) inc refreshments on route, cert & badge for all finishers & light meal at finish. Proceeds to Yorkshire Air Ambulance & Burley Methodist Church. SEF accepted, cheque to Trollers Trot.

A great LDWA event - the best
A most civilized way of manning a checkpoint. A few years back I did take a crate of beer on a checkpoint the missus and I were manning, a very hot day and a few indulged with relish.
There is also the 'real ale ramble', organised by Gordon Green here locallly in Wales, I've never done it as I believe it can be a bit spartan with regards food etc. and a lot of forest track work (boring). But he does put a couple of barrels of ale out in the woods to help yourself on the way round. I believe this has resulted in some interestingly slow runs :D

Re: All LDWA events thread.
A big THANKS to the East Lancs LDWA for a cracking day out.
Please, please, please try one of these events. They're as competitive as you want them to be - well done Mick and Ozzy btw (1st/2nd), food/drinks all the way round, cheap to enter and a great way of getting a long run under your belt on a weekend.
To follow up on Chris Browns' post - CP6 was high on the moors so not really practical to carry water up there so it was a choice of either Whiskey, Rum or Sherry - and not a UKA/Claim Direct official in sight........
Do you eat or drink soup? Ans. Neither if you gotta run after ;) thanks Moo!

Anglezarke Amble
I can highly recommend the Anglezarke Amble on Sat. 10th Feb. It's a brill. route ( a little bit of overlap with the 2 Crosses) with good refreshments en route and at the end. Entry forms are available online at http://uk.geocities.com/west_lancs_ldwauk/amble
or via the LDWA website.

Re: All LDWA events thread.
Combined with the Winter Hill race the following day it makes for a great weekend.
-
Re: Anglezarke Amble
I've seen the route for the shorter course for the anglezarke amble, where does the longer route go to?
-
Re: All LDWA events thread.
Anglezarke Amble - some vague recollections from doing this two years ago:
Rivington Pike
Winter Hill (past TV masts)
Down the hill over road (A675 I think)
Can't remember anything between there and Darwen Tower, except some very nice cakes
Great Hill, I think by way of Slipper Lowe
White Coppice
Past the reservoirs back to Rivington
Hope I remember correctly. If I ever find the route description again, I'll post some more details. I enjoyed this event - the weather was bad, but the refreshments were first class.

I've not done it but did and "enjoyed" the 2 crosses (just under 5hrs - crap i know! - i only saw 1 cross? cos am that fast!). Here is a detailed link - grid refs, entry details and route desc for the anglezarke Amble
http://myweb.tiscali.co.uk/yorkshire...arke_amble.htm
Its looks tougher than the 2 crosses coz of more climb but given a good day it should be ok
-
Re: All LDWA events thread.
Anyone else run at Anglezarke today?
I followed some iffy gen on the route desc and added some extra on (not for fun either).
At least I had some studs in the snow to follow when I rejoined the field.
Good scran afterwards as ever.
Made for a decent alternative to Wadsworth.

Re: All LDWA events thread.
I'm glad I found this thread. I was keen to do the Ambleside LDW but it's the same day as the Edale. Anyhow the tightarses on LDWA are waaaay worse than any at FRA. They were giving nothing away! Talk about elitist and not even giving the bloody dates of walks! And I quote, "only brief details of events in the near future are available to non-members which makes long-term planning very difficult."
-
Re: All LDWA events thread.
You could join.
You could look on the local group websites - they almost all carry details and entry forms.

I think you may find this will soon be history as the National Committee of the LDWA have decided to open up the full Gambit to non members , not sure as to when as the decision has not long been announced.

Re: All LDWA events thread.
on the LDWA website there's reference to a harveys map of LD Routes ............ is this any good?

After much badgering they are going to change it and put all events on the website, but don't hold your breath waiting, as ldwa don't move that fast ;) .
In the meantime ..... cough up a few ££££s and join :) .

I'm not tight, contrary to many's belief, but I only wanted to run ONE walk so I didn't think it was worth it....
I'm a fully paid up member of FRA, although i do owe club subs for this year....

I'm sure you really want to do 2 events ,
The second being my 40+ miler in August :D

Re: All LDWA events thread.
any information fss would be great (!)
-
Re: All LDWA events thread.
It is a tricky route to follow, very easy to overrun a turn or mis-count the number of stiles. The 09:00 start has the advantage of people on the route in front of you for much of the way round. Look out especially for Dwerry House - you don't see until after you turn right - make sure you know where the Grid Ref is.
Send me a pm with your email address I'll try to send you a map with the route (what I think is the route) on it. It won't all the twists and turns but it should you where you ought to be going.
Me & Mrs FSS have done three times and got lost, or at least have been off route, every time and always in different places but never very seriously.
-
Re: All LDWA events thread.
For info, anyone thinking about doing this years 100 at the end of May http://www.cantcanolbarth.co.uk/index.htm
I have just heard that the event is not far off full, so get your entries in quick.
-
Re: All LDWA events thread.
It's too far Moley!!! Haven't even done a 50 miler yet. (will work up to it though I hope)

Re: All LDWA events thread.
The Missus is marshalling on the Marshals - I am meant to be, but the Dragons Back takes priority ;) . So guess I shall be somewhere helping on the actual 100, otherwise I shall be drummed out of the Brownies for good:(.
No doubt see you there, will be in touch. :)

That's the one, same as last year but with my extra little loop added :D.
Think it comes in at around 7000ft ascent total (very aprox.). Which isn't bad for an area with no mountains ;)

Re: All LDWA events thread.
Anyone on the South Shropshire Circular this Saturday?
I was aiming to give it a blast, but pulled a calf muscle last Friday  will almost certainly be there, but taking it steady - more walk and shuffle :( rather than run.
Still, a day out in the long Myndd area can only be good for me whatever the pace.

I was there... thought it was a cracking route & the good weather helped... Particularly enjoyed the Christmas cake at Wentnor too :) Shame that 40 people didn't turn up. Had to be towed off the parking field though :$
-
Re: All LDWA events thread.
Good route, I thoroughly enjoyed that with some good little climbs and plenty of interest navigation wise, to keep the brain ticking over.
I was also towed out, but fair play, Neil had the tractor and driver all ready and waiting for us. That is what I call good practical organisation that thinks ahead, I can think of a few events where we could still be pushing each others cars out of the mud
Chris Dawes did a good checkpoint (as always), just wish I had been prepared to stop long enough for the fresh cooked 'bacon butty' :D, just imagine a fell race with the offer of that half way round, be queues around the mountain
