Or was it Extreme Running by Ranulph Fiennes ?

Survival of the Fittest is pure inspiration if you're getting on in years (like me). There's a whole thread about how we are socialised into believing that as we get older we need to slow down physically and ultimately give up hard physical exercise, and how this just doesn't stack up either historically or physiologically.
Like Sol I found that the book made me change my life. It made me realise that I've still got time to do the stuff I want to and that I might be a grey haired owld bloke but that's not going to stop me chucking myself at physical challenges.
Extreme Running by Kym McConnell and Dave Horsley
Another good Christmas book:
Long Days In Lakeland by Ronald Turnbull
I assume you have all got Joss by Keith Richardson
As a relatively new fell runner (unattached at present) I am in need of some basic technique advice and have been looking for Kev Shevells Uphill and Downhill Techniques respectively. I saw them referenced in the last Fellrunner and here on Xrunner's post but have exhausted the usual and obvious Amazon and Abebooks route with no success. Any advice/direction?
Try the Trail Guides website
Is 'Joss' only on sale on the site you linked xrunner?
No, many other bookshops will have or can obtain copies for you. e.g Pete Bland Sports
Fantastic, thanks for your help.
I recently discovered a copy of 'See The Conquering Hero Comes' in excellent condition. As it was from a print run of only 900 in 1973, I suspect this may now be quite rare.
Anyone any ideas as to its scarcity/value?
what a great discovery these books are hard to come by, you are looking at about £25-£40 for a copy, lucky me though i have 4 copys of the book which is a great bit of history about the senior guides race at Grasmere Sports.
Thanks for confirming what I had suspected MarkMc. I found it in amongst a stack of old climbing mags in a club hut and will now have to pass it back to the club librarian for safekeeping. As you said it is an excellent history of the guides races up to 1970.
Grey Stone Books have republished another edition of this book by Ronald Turnbull and Roy Clayton:
The Welsh Three Thousand Foot Challenges. A Guide for Walkers and Hill Runners.
The new edition has 207 pages compared to the original edition which had 128 pages.
IIRC this book covers all the disciplines - hound trailing, wrestling etc. I'm sure it is this that I had a copy of in the mid '80's and gave it to a work colleague who was into the hound / terrier scene and the pro-sports thing ( back when we got suspended for showing an interest ).
"See The Conquerining Hero Comes" by Michael Miller and Denis Bland is a history of the Guides Race at Grasmere Sports.
"Grasmere's Giants Of Today. A Pictorial Record" by Rex Woods is about all sports at the Grasmere Games.
There are several copies of the excellent book "Some Records Of The Grasmere Sports" by Hugh Machell (1911) on ABE.
I'm crap at running up hill so am tempted to get Kevin Shevels' Uphill Techniques For Off-Road Runners. Would you guys recommend it?
I've set up this page on my website in an attempt to keep track of classic fell running books for sale on Amazon. See 'Fell Running' tab.
A couple of interesting books have emerged in recent weeks; not purely fell running in content but well worth a mention in this context.
First, Tim Noakes' Waterlogged which surveys current thinking about hydration in endurance exercise. A review from Joe Uhan on iRunFar here:

If you like to read on a Kindle, 'It's a hill, get over it: fell running's history and characters' is available for Kindle for 99p from Amazon for this weekend only .... also note that 'The Round: in Bob Graham's footsteps' is also available as an e-book.

If you like touchy-feely books, I will be signing copies of both books in their proper format at a talk at the Keswick Mountain Festival next month.

Has anybody read this book yet?
Tripping Over Clouds by Lucy Bennett
Some reviews indicate that it contains poems about fell running.
Here is a YouTube reading by the author.Quote:
