So, in essence, you are saying that Cumbria is the best place in Britain and you will return time and time again?
Agree wholeheartedly with you there (Cornwall's good too mind you):D
If you are serious about a BGR then we may be able to team up for recces over the winter and next year - how often might you make it up this way?
PS - 5 legs in 5 days? - That was some plan :eek:
As long you enjoyed it though, thats the main thing. Sometimes, when driving home from work I stop and marvel at the splendour of my surroundings without even getting out of the van.
I know there are walking holidays that split it up that way. Seemed a reasonable idea to take it easy.:p Just a shame about the weather on Wednesday & Thursday.:( (Not that my legs complained about the rest!!!)
Cheers for that... I'll have to strengthen my legs a bit (read: a LOT) first though!:o Not sure yet how often I can afford to get up. May sort out some lift sharing with Moo & Huw.
just back from Lakes, where I did my first ever BG "bite-size chunk" last Thursday
also want to apologise publicly to Baggins for wussing out on the intended 10am start and leaving him to trog round the whole of Leg 4 in atrocious conditions :o
I started about 3:30pm and managed Yewbarrow, RedPike, Scoat Fell (took a nice photo of Steeple, but didn't bother actually running out/back) and Pillar, then back down Black Sail Pass
everything above about 700m was in cloud, but I managed OK and really enjoyed it :D
You wouldn't have learnt much about the route if you'd gone with me.
(I'm ignoring all these paths because I'm heading for a grassy ramp, its out there in the mist somewhere. Compass bearing? no no look at the shape of these rocks we're on the right line :D)
I must admit if I didn't need to get out I wouldn't have set off but I was on nights so couldn't wait till the weather improved.
It did start to clear as I came off Gable, strangely this was when I saw the first walkers of the day :)
Baggins - at least if I'd been with you I wouldn't've gone the wrong way off Pillar... twice! :o
at various points I was following what were presumably your footprints from earlier (triangular studs?) - maybe I should practice my tracking skills rather than navigation!
I only saw one couple of hikers (near Red Pike) the whole time I was out - they asked whether I was alright - I replied fine - we both agreed it was a lovely day to be out :)
Later on in training when you do more than one leg at a time things get easier but the legs can be done on their own.
As has been mentioned leg 1 is easy - start at Keswick and jog back on the old railway track after Blencathra or catch the bus from Threlkeld.
Leg 5 is easy if you start from Little Town and go to Honister and back. The road bit can be run out and back on its own if you wish for route finding or just driving it.
Leg 2 is more tricky but I would start at Dunmail Raise and go to Threkeld. Walk/jog or catch bus back to Keswick. Options then are: bus/hitch back to car that day or stay the night in Keswick leaving the option of reversing the route the next day and picking up car.
Leg 4 is very feasble to do coming back on moses trod or if this is too much then just drop back down into Wasdale from wherever you get to eg Blacksail or Kirkfell.
As already mentioned leg 3 is the hardest but you can do an out and back from either end, go for the hitching back to car option or if you can afford the luxury then book a night in a b and b in Wasdale and walk back to your car at Dunmail the next day.

Morning all
Does anyone fancy pacing legs 1 and 2 of our BG attempt this coming weekend ? We are setting off at midnight on Friday on a 23 hr clockwise schedule and are a little short for legs 1 and 2 pacing ! The weather forecast is good so it should be a nice night to be on the fells. :)
If anyone can help, please drop me an email at [email protected] or call me on 07714 766 179.
Many thanks,
Pete
Will be in the lakes on 26th October, staying at Braithwaite. With the family but hoping to reccie at least one leg. Done legs 1 and 5 so fancy a look at any of the other 3. Nice slow plod round, if anyone fancies joining me, get in touch. If i go out on my own i'll probably get lost and be late back and be in trouble..........again:rolleyes:
I am running my Autumn marathon the following weekend so would only be running 10m or so on the road.
Hope you get some company. Re getting lost, leg 2 should pose no real problems, all you have to do is head south and keep to the path for 90% of the time.
Sadly, can't get in anywhere on these dates (must book earlier next time) apolgies to Baggins and Splinter;)
My only hope now is Park Coppice (near Coniston) who appear to have vacancies later in the week. Going to try to get in there on Friday 31 October. If i do, i will be running from there up to Coniston Old Man on 1 November, wife wants the car so i'll have to run from the campsite, not exactly a BG leg, but it will have to do. Going to ring first thing in the morning and hopefully book a pitch:)
Merrylegs
I just sent you a pm about wed 29th run and then read you're last reply. Pity you'll not be about then.
I'm planning on doing a long recce wend nov 20th-22nd, anyone about then? hopefully a leg each day. I've not done any of them before so hopefully wont get too lost!:)
Irish Carol
DTS,
Sorry put in wrong dates... will be there Fri 21st til Sun 23rd, you free the friday 21st? was planning to do CW section 1 on Fri but open to suggestions/changes. You know any of the sections?
IC
That's my birthday weekend so may well fancy celebrating it with a bit of BGR recceing.
Friday 21st sounds like a goer to me!
The sum total of my BG-recce'ing experience currently stands at half of Leg 4, so Leg 1 would be fine
I intend to take a day off work, which I can do at short notice, but would probably want a half-decent weather forecast before I did so :o
MxHornet,
i'm liking your happy b'day celebration plans! :)
you thinking sat and sun?
DTS.... you letting us off-roaders down...looking for good weather:), it's almost winter, you're supposed to get wet, dirty, cold and muddy :D that's the whole point!!!
IC
I could be up for this... I have done Leg 1 counter clockwise... as a loop from the Latrigg carpark... worked well, would like to do it the other way around :)
listen, if I want to get cold, wet and muddy I can do that on my local park!
if I'm gonna have a day off work and drive up to the Lakes and back, I at least want to be able to SEE the bloomin hills! ;)
I'm still game for Leg 1 on Fri.21st, and was also going to suggest Latrigg car-park, although anywhere around Keswick would be easy enough to meet up I guess...?
DTS,
I can meet anywhere. What time you thinking we should set off at? I'm driving over that morning so not sill o'clock! Think we'll get wet feet even if we can see the hills :)
Hannelle, all welcome, so great if you can make it.
MXhornet, thinking of setting off about 10 on Sunday (there's a couple of friends driving over that morning who can't get there before then). That ok with you?
Booked into the YH in Keswick for Fri and Sat with two mates if anyone is round for the whole wend?
I'm so sad... I'm a bit giddy about it all! :)
IC
I was planning to go up next weekend, but still recovering from a sprained ankle, so now it is looking like the weekend after, so yes, looks like a go-er!
Trying to get the Friday off as well, so I get full benefit out of the long drive up, as I will be coming from South Wales! May book myself into the Keswick YH as well and will let you know when I know for sure what my plans are.
IC - got your PM - will get back to you, so can organise time/place...
am now thinking that although we don't really need to do Moot Hall to Latrigg (from a recce'ing point of view) - it would be nice to do the whole of Moot Hall to Skiddaw to get a better idea of the schedule time for that section...
(see - you're not the only one who's sad/giddy!)
and you're right - I think we would get a special award from the Bob Graham Club if we could get round Leg 1 in November without getting our feet wet!
Hi,
Just picked up on this thread, I'm also hopinh to make an attempt in June 2009 to celebrate my 30th, unfortunately I can't make the 21st as I have already made plans to do the three peaks that day but I have Fridays off work and am planning to use this to my advantage.
I like the idea of doing Moot Hall to Skiddaw too... does that make me also a saddo? ;)
Not sure I'm going to be able to afford to venture up at all now :(
I am with Marvin on this.
I set out back in 1985 in very thick fog, hadn't reccied the route across the Fitz Park and spent too much time finding the way out. The goal posts helped!
It's a hard enough job for the vast majority of us, so don't make it any harder by not looking over every inch of the ground. That's hardly a chore is it? :D
Morgan
I understand that there was a group last year that reached Little Town on a clockwise round with time in hand, went wrong on road back to the Moot Hall and finished outside 24 hours.
ooh, while we've got a few more experienced types on here, how about a really "back to basics" question:
has anybody done Moot Hall to Skiddaw by going via Applethwaite-Millbeck-CarlSide?
I can see that the traditional route has a steadier gradient (rather than flat + very steep), but just wondered if anybody had tried it out time-wise...?
There was talk of this some time back. A couple of people had "raced" against each other. The general perception was that, in terms of time, there was little in it but that the Carlside route took more out of your legs.....which is not too good at such an early stage!:o
I supported on Leg 1 and we nearly didn't find Fitz Park... not naming names of course ;).
