I have decided not to race Langdale... Too unfit, it would have taken me something like 5 hours and that would have buggered my legs up for the relays next week:eek:
Still going up to the Lakes though for a little run around, so Al, I will see you wizz past at Esk Hause then :D what vest will you be wearing?
It is beautiful and sunny down here on the Welsh Borders :)
Last year the weather the day before was atrocious and it took me something like 8 hours to get to Ambleside from S Wales, through floods and storm... Everyone said the race was ging to be cancelled... But lo and behold, the weather on the day was absolutely perfect! Even though the going was a bit wet in places... Had to drag a bloke out of a bog on Martcrag Moor... Saw him disappear up to his armpits a few metres in front of me. That is exactly why I like to follow someone along there :D Perfect bog detectors :D
I have ridden a penny farthing... actually, I have ridden a penny farthing more than once... Twice is was a small one, so I could put a fut on the road in case of wobble/having to stop quickly...
The third time it was a proper sized one... as in you had to have 34 ins inside leg length in order to reach the pedals! It was damn scary, I tell you! First, in order to get on, you run with the thing, with your hand on the handlebars high on top of that huge front wheel... then you sort of hop skip and jump via a small pedal thing sticking out, onto the saddle and quickly find the pedals that are turning around, to put your feet on them to gain control of the bike. Riding the thing through Chelsea, in London, down a narrow one way street with cars parked on both sides. Most scary was having to turn the corner  and hit King's Road
Defo a never again thing, I tell ya!
The guy who owns the penny farthing tends to hold onto lamposts and the like when stopped for traffic lights, as it is such a b*gger getting on and of...
Hanneke - sounds scary enough riding one on a road then?
actually I thought of you yesterday after I found I'd won a Runner's World competition for a pair of shoes and a long sleeved top, see here:

Best thing about riding a penny farthing in London is that absoluetly no-one will overlook you, as the thing is so tall and obvious, you get given a wide berth by all other road users... You should see peoples faces when they see it coming past!
Maybe we should all get one and re-name them Pony Farthings:cool:
Can just imagine Master Boneboy atop one with a flat cap on:D
minding my own business on an out-and-back bit of the Dave Bray race over Tintwistle today, pleasantly surprised by a "Well Done Fell Pony!" shout
twas Manhar coming the other way (well ahead of me I might add) :D
Cheers Daz & Merry - although I must confess I am now (& I do have The Masters blessing - "Once a Pony always a Pony") an erstwile Pony.......
Where's Ricky?
