Fellsman

Also on the kit check, be wary of fell shoes that are looking knackered. Ideally I want to wear my now 600 mile plus mudrocks but many of the studs are looking worst for wear. I'm kind of thinking that I'll have to get a new pair just in time for the fellsman to satisfy the kit check - my nice and comfy 'run in' pair are ideal but ironically I'll have to wear a brand spanking new pair and trust that they'll fit as well :thunbdown:

There is no ambiguity here. I'm quite surprised at people's different interpretations when reading the same thing. It clearly states that you can wear short or 3/4's, but you MUST also carry full length leg wear which is IN ADDITION to carrying waterproof trousers. So if you wear shorts you must also take longs and waterproofs.

Hank, why would you think that you could leave one behind ? Again the rule is unambiguous.

And don't get me started on the idiot who thought Marigolds would pass for waterproof gloves. Some people shouldn't be let out !

I agree 4c is unambiguous, that's why I referenced it in comparison to the base-layer/three long-sleeved tops bit, which could be read as if your base-layer is long sleeved it might be cosnidered part of the three long-sleeved tops. 4c states the full-length trousers should be in addition to the waterproof ones; rule 4g doesn't state the three long-sleeve tops should be in addition to the base-layer in 4f. Likewise, if we're beaing really pedantic you might infer from the 'not cotton' statement in 4g your base-layer in 4f could be made of cotton. I wouldn't, but someone might.

Like I said, I think the rule is intended as one base-layer and three additonal long-sleeve tops and a waterproof jacket (5 layers in total). I don't think it's totally unambiguous though. You might want to check post #2066 too. I've never run in 5 layers in my life, so if I could leave one behind, I would.

I agree. "Open to interpretation" would be my comment. And seeing as we have to carry those those three extra tops, here is MY interpretation/kit list:

1. Waterproof/taped jacket
2. Waterproof/taped trousers
3. Long trousers (ie. tights), probably worn on day with wicking pants. If very warm I might wear lycra shorts and then carry the longs to change into later
4. Baselayer (worn on day)
5. 3 x long tops : i) soft shell warm layer ii) extra baselayer iii) pertex lightweight windproof jacket
6. Windstopper gloves + waterproof mitts
7. Warm hat but also a couple of buffs
8. Extra socks. I'll be wearing Sealskinz waterproof to start with, but these are for emergency back-up

I might consider an assault on K2 afterwards :D Seriously - DMD - will this do the trick?

You might have a bit extra to carry. It's all lightweight stuff, you'll be fine. Fancy carrying a couple of 9Ah gel cells as well as a mast, some computer gear and a laptop too? That's what I'll be doing on the Friday afternoon, on the Saturday afternoon, and maybe even a retrieval trip on the Sunday.

Absolutely :p I'm currently debating whether or not to use the bladder in my rucksack or just take bottles. Water will be freely available to refill and there is little point in carrying the extra weight of a full water load plus the extra weight of the bladder itself.

I think one small plastic bottle of drink is fine
