Does the fragment printed and marked map (not Harvey/OS original) pass for kit check?
Wouldn't this sort of thing go through the RO? There's a waiting list on the CFRA site so I imagine people would be pretty miffed if they were on that and someone jumped the queue.Quote:

My favourite stream water comes from the gill crossing at the start of the climb to Seatallen, the stream just after the start of the contour round Kirk Fell and the one by the path between Styhead and Esk Hause.Quote:

IN general terms IMHO OS maps are better in valley floors and built up, where Harveys are far better on hillsides for getting a quick appreciation of contours.
To save weight and annotate, and what I use as actual racemap, you can photocopy or scan parts of a map and highlight routes and bearings (I do , generally starting with Anquet or that Harveys)
But for the price of a pint you can buy a Pete Bland race map offering which has the coordinates and route marked, and save a lot of weight - order it online , or ring and phone order to make sure they have one, and to make sure of getting it, I can imagine they run out quick on raceday particularly for a championship race.

Agree with the above post. I have been running in and around Wasdale for the last couple of days. The streams high up are very weak, and it is very hot even on the summits. Keeping cool will be a priority, if you can't drink it dunk a buff or a hat in it is my advice. Good luck everyone.

I know this is probably a silly question but with mudclaws hurting my feet on hard ground and it is likely to be dry most of the way round would Hoka one evo's be any good tomorrow on Wasdale (thinking about cushioning)

I will ignore alfs comment. I have just done a very short run tonight in them and was very impressed but Forrest you are right it would be a risk too far to wear them tomorrow so it will have to be mudclaws as they are the only fell shoes I have. I have got the evos for the Lakeland 50 so can give them a go next weekend instead.Quote:

Wow, amazing run out today, so hot, plenty of water about tho, carried a bottle and kept dunking hat, I was soaked most of the race. Had a bad run last year 6:22, about 5:10 this year, well pleased. Manic fast descent off Pillar, good line off Scafell and a good descent down Lingmell. Thanks to all the Marshalls en route, and everyone else involved in the organisation of this great race. Last year I said "never again". Well done to all the runners today.
Wow way to hot for me told my mate to take it easy through first two cp's as I climbed with ben and simon to whin rigg what a idiot I am wish id listened to my own advice (payed the price later on) 27 mins down on last yr. cramping started around pillar just before marshall asked me if id wanted to drop out! thanks for that, I carnt of looked good!! Massive thanks to Neil and his mate at the foot of gable for the food n drink :thumbup: started to feel better around sprinkling tarn. Well done everyone.

Most were taken the start/finish field or at the wildebeest-like watering hole of Greendale Gill, where some amusing ways of cooling off were demonstrated. At the finish I stopped taking photos for a while because I could't simultaneously perform my timing duties, so there will be quite a chunk of you missing from there.
Out with the family swimming near Shepherds Crag and Scoffer passed...running! He told me there were 280 starters and 104 drop-outs!! I'm now hoping for a top 50 by default!

A rather chastening experience, but toughed it out to set what will hopefully be a personal worst which lasts until I'm a V55 at least! Well done to all who got round and thanks to all the marshalls and support out there. Cheers to Digby, Tindersticks and Stefan for chatting to me when I felt reet crap over Seatallan/Scoat Tarn way!
Well done one and all for being on the start line, giving it a go and finishing or retiring to do battle on another day.
I also salute all those who like me pulled out to give others the chance to run it. But seriously, well done those who managed it - it sounded a proper ordeal.
Thanks a lot from me to all involved in putting it on. Must be a massive job. Surprised only 280 turned up from 400 on the entry list, plus waiting list. Would be interested to know if anyone had a bearing from the top of Great Gable that they'd recommend. I went left towards the tourist path, but get the feeling it's maybe better right. I deliberately took it slow on the first climb and also in the baking heat across the valley to Greendale, and set off up to Seatallan thinking that I would retire unless it got a bit cooler/breezier higher up, which it did, and I started to perk up and work a bit better, and was quite looking forward to pushing on up to Pillar, but arrived at Seatallan CP about 4 mins over cut-off and was timed out.
had a very pleasant jog back to the finish with a load of others that timed-out behind me, and at least I beat the bulk of the traffic out of the valley ;)
