Today's Movie

We also went to Ripon's funky new Curzon cinema a few weekends back. I'm not sure why they chose Ripon for venturing out of London but their poor judgement is our gain :) We saw Blue is the Warmest Colour which was brilliant. Really intense and although the seven minute sex scene was a tad too long...there's only so much bum grabbing and 'bits' snuffling I can watch in the company of strangers without being tempted to look around to see what everyone's reaction is...the actresses were amazing, so brave and genuine.

I read that the director was a nightmare to work with and neither actress will work with him again but he (and they) made a great film.

As an expert on all things The Hobbit and Lord of the Rings, I'm a bit pissed off that they've yet again taken huge great liberties with the story and characters and folklore and the humour of it all. Suffice to say the Tolkein version of the hobbit is far less drawn out and doesn't take itself nearly so seriously. The goblins in the hobbit, just like the orcs in the LOTRs, were just much more 'fun' and individualistic in the books than the all same as each other psycho headcases that Peter Jackson comes up with. Still a good film though with some fantastic fight scenes. 3D plus IMAX was too much though, especially as much of the filming is close up stuff. 2D will I'm sure be miles better.

I was referring to it as the viewer but as the actresses said that it took ten days to film that scene and the director was an arse, I'd say they thought it was too long too! Of course, if you are talking about real life and being a participant, it wholly depends on your choice of partner, the situation, its level of precariousness and the urgency involved. :p

I love a good film where the director is in touch with the viewers perspective and understanding of the deeper meaning to the scene. Dont get me wrong, I love a good battle, but when the director films it in a way that you get the....how can I put this....absolute true passion, now thats what gets my tummy excited.
Often you see great films, with incredible story lines, of mixed genre and class, but its ruined by the lack of true understanding of the greater meaning surrounding the underlying story which should be present from the mid to the end, without causing a rift with the start, middle and end.
People often misunderstand this, or perhaps wish to ignore it it altogether. I for one, always find that absolute true passion. Yes sir'e, I know what I'm talking about, and I know what I like.

And not forgetting the correct levels of sound and lighting.

The only film I have seen in 3D was Avatar. It blew my mind maaan! But also felt nauseous for the first ten mins while I grasped it.
I don't go to the cinema often, maybe once or twice a year and it goes up in price every time. £8 for the Hobbit. Is this standard rates or was I paying extra to sit in a nice place with no kids messing around.
Thinking about it I don't go often because I'm anti-social..

Despicable Me 2

Intellectually a bit of a stretch for me.

Alan Partridge Alpha Papa, adequately entertaining.

The Worlds End, also adequately entertaining. But slightly less so.

Kids ruin cinemas for me, and restaurants.

Not that I'd ever stop folks taking their kids places. But sheesh they can be annoying. Oh well.

I watched The Last Stand with Arnie in it the other day also, not a bad film one of those you can just sit and watch, no brains no fuss.
I watched it at home, alone, no distractions. Other than my dog wanting out for a poopy..

The Hobbit was £11 a ticket at IMAX so I think you got off lightly! I also had to sit with someone behind me kicking my chair all the way through but, to be fair, the legroom was designed for someone that was 5'2" so he may well have just been trying to get comfy. Other than that, it was good :)

Side Effects - 2013 Rooney Mara, Catherine Zeta-Jones, Jude Law directed by Steven Soderburgh. Very good thriller though the resolution of the plot felt a little rushed.

Watched 'The Worlds End' by the guys who did Shaun of the Dead.
Fell asleep half way through and only finished it to see what happened.
Waste of time..

I loved world's end. It also made a great point about of the blandness of a lot of towns nowadays (and the starbucksation of everything). Also I loved how everyone got better and better at fighting, the more they drank. Simon Pegg is my hero :)

I thought I'd enjoy it but wasn't impressed! Seemed a bit 'starbucksation' itself. The fighting was pretty good though!

Not many of these about...a British road movie. You have to excuse Lenny Henry's dodgy Scouse accent though. Good soundtrack, Pete Postlethwaite, there's even good old Bobby Knutt. :)

talking of British road movies, I watched Sightseers the other night and was pleasantly (if that's the right word) surprised
very well directed/acted/scripted
probably the best film I've ever seen about [Spoiler Alert] mental people randomly killing strangers ;)

It is good isn't it.

Scott Pilgrim vs the world - very good. It's like a new genre.

Scott Pilgrim is brilliant as is Sightseers in a dreadful way. Mind you I'm confused how in Sightseers they managed to see Ribblehead Viaduct from what looked like the top of Wrynose (or Hardknott?) Pass in the Lakes

It starts well and just gets better. The final 15min or so are cracking.

Just tried watching Thor the dark world.. Sacked it off after 10 mins might try again after a few beers some time..

Lone Survivor with the missus today. Very good. Typical American hero action film. But it is "based" on fact.

The action sequences were good, which is where sports films usually fall down. The rest of it was spread a bit thin, once upon a time 2 sports stars did not get along (and apparently they did) and they vied for the title.
