Having a bash at this cracker again on Saturday; there were rumblings last year that it wasn't going to be on for 2015 so glad to see any preventive issues got sorted out as I love this event. The weather is forecast to be dry and cold up to and through the weekend so should be fairly speedy but...
... has anyone been up there this week who can report on the state of the dreaded flags? Expecting treacherous, compacted snow-ice but hoping todays warmth has sorted the worst of it. I took a painful whack down Keighley Gate a few weeks ago when conditions were similar - about time they got the gritters up there :p
I was up there Saturday and must admit I preferred the flags being under about 1-2cm of compacted snow/ice for at least 50% of them as opposed to just thinly ice-glazed over. Although my More Mile Cheviots were fine on the snow/ice on Saturday I'm seriously considering wearing (or at least carrying) my yaktrax snow/icegrips for the main moorland section as I doubt there will have been a great change this week given the recent and forecast sub-zero night temperatures up to and including Friday night.
Here's a pic from just before the start of the Rocky Valley section showing what conditions were like last Saturday:
I just had a quick trot up to the Radio mast from Dick Hudson's last Saturday and the flags seemed fine under a wee bit of snow. Hopefully they won't be icy this Saturday and I can get over this lurgy : (
Any idea why they were suggesting the Stride wouldn't be run ? That would be a terrible shame..
Can't run this now due to other commitments, please PM me if you would like my place
I've just been for a run to the Trig from Ilkley and then up rocky valley
The flags are fine, 95% clear of snow, a few patches of freeze/thawed ice in places, no issues there really
Rocky valley and the approach is however an Ice Rink! I'm hoping that with the forecast this may melt but its always in the shade so could still be an issue on Saturday am unless we have a significant rise in temperature
Or me!! http://forum.fellrunner.org.uk/showt...084#post597084
It's telling how people are now running to the side of the flags to avoid them.
And hopefully creating lovely new boggy paths for us!
Place now taken
Another great morning despite a few tumbles and managed to locate all the knee deep bogs on the climb after Whetstone Gate.
Heard a lady broke her ankle in Esholt Woods, hope it wasn't too bad as far as broken ankles go; of course could have been worse in terms of location but still not nice, poor lass.
As usual huge thanks to marshalls and organisers. Hope everyone else made it back in one piece.
I went to the path at Cowpers Cross today so I didn't have to go into the bogs. Super conditions out of the course apart from a few patches of ice, given the recent wind and snow we were really lucky
yes it was 2:38 Graham Pearce. I was 4th in 2:44 1st lady was Jane Mccarthy in 3:05
I was running behind a girl in a Baildon vest somewhere near the Swastika Stone when she took a nasty fall .... I helped her up and there didn't seem to be any obvious blood or damage, but I didn't see her finish. I hope she's OK.
I thought the route was generally OK yesterday. Still a bit of ice up Rocky Valley, but like most I managed to avoid the bad bits.
2:28 is an outrageous time isn't it? Well done to Graham and Jane.
The Baildon runner was probably Michelle Morris. She's training for the MdS, so while she's tough enough to finish under almost any conditions, if she'd picked up an injury that would have been aggravated by another ten miles of running she might have decided to bale out rather than risk it.
Another brilliant Rombald's and a PB in my 16th consecutive year (those flagstones have some use ;)). Missed you protodoc; sorry you couldn't make it.
Just uploaded my race photos (make that checkpoint photos due to a bit of running being involved).
Cor - there are a lot of photos for a PB! Well done.
Has anyone seen the results yet? I know it's often a while, but some folk get them mailed out I think.

Thanks Pragmatic! It worked perfectly. These were eagerly awaited.
Cheers Nick, see you at the Hobble
If anyone has an entry, but can't do it, please let me know. Ta.
likewise-any unwanted entries I would take?
Me too :'(
Wouldn't mind an entry or two pretty please :-)
I just missed it
So.. looks mildish, damp and potentially very windy for the Rombalds. Deep joy.
I have one place available for this event on Saturday 6th February. Any takers?
However, the organisers need to know details by Wednesday at the latest.
Hi. The place has been taken up.
looking a tad wet on the forecast FFS!!!!!!!!
I noticed that. It's a lot worse than it was nearer the beginning of the week. Did you get a place then, T_C?
yep I'm in thanks to Harry & Tony ta.:)
Is that you Coal Humping in your avatar?!?!
Surprised nobody has posted about how lovely this was today. Perhaps they are still thawing out - it took me a long time in the bath. A wonderful trip out in Aire and Wharfedale with well hydrated moors inbetween. Knowing the route well was a definite advantage today.
I enjoyed it. First time I've run over 2hrs in about 6 months so not really an attempt on a fast time, but it was great to be out running long again and battling with the weather. Rombalds is one of my favourite events, the route is challenging and it's usually in poor weather, making the hot meal afterwards especially welcome. Great atmosphere always
Yes, always a good 'un.
It was my tenth time yesterday and I volunteered to act as chaperone to a first timer. That made for a slow time and even longer out in the rain...so even better vfm than usual.
