Having a bash at this cracker again on Saturday; there were rumblings last year that it wasn't going to be on for 2015 so glad to see any preventive issues got sorted out as I love this event. The weather is forecast to be dry and cold up to and through the weekend so should be fairly speedy but...

... has anyone been up there this week who can report on the state of the dreaded flags? Expecting treacherous, compacted snow-ice but hoping todays warmth has sorted the worst of it. I took a painful whack down Keighley Gate a few weeks ago when conditions were similar - about time they got the gritters up there

Don't get me started on those bloody flags. Ugly, dangerous etc. should have let nature be.

I was up there Saturday and must admit I preferred the flags being under about 1-2cm of compacted snow/ice for at least 50% of them as opposed to just thinly ice-glazed over. Although my More Mile Cheviots were fine on the snow/ice on Saturday I'm seriously considering wearing (or at least carrying) my yaktrax snow/icegrips for the main moorland section as I doubt there will have been a great change this week given the recent and forecast sub-zero night temperatures up to and including Friday night.

Here's a pic from just before the start of the Rocky Valley section showing what conditions were like last Saturday:

I have to agree with you there. The only time I run on the flags is when there's a fair covering of snow on them!

I just had a quick trot up to the Radio mast from Dick Hudson's last Saturday and the flags seemed fine under a wee bit of snow. Hopefully they won't be icy this Saturday and I can get over this lurgy : (

Any idea why they were suggesting the Stride wouldn't be run ? That would be a terrible shame..

I've just been for a run to the Trig from Ilkley and then up rocky valley

The flags are fine, 95% clear of snow, a few patches of freeze/thawed ice in places, no issues there really

Rocky valley and the approach is however an Ice Rink! I'm hoping that with the forecast this may melt but its always in the shade so could still be an issue on Saturday am unless we have a significant rise in temperature

It's telling how people are now running to the side of the flags to avoid them.
