Re: Today's Wildlife Encounter
Took the up and coming pup for a walk this eve about 8 ish before it went dark and the bats were out in force catching the midges and stuff.
Then when it got slightly more dark either and owl or some small ish bird of brey (looked brown) was screaking its head off in the woods.
And I saw a fox last night cycling home from le supermarket de la sainsburys.
-
Re: Today's Wildlife Encounter
Also as we were watching the pelicans on the lake by Horse Guards Parade ground one of them caught a fair sized fish - must have been 8 - 9 inches and another came up and nicked it as it was manoeuvring it down its beak.

Re: Today's Wildlife Encounter
I have the most forlorn looking dove ever sat under my tree in the wet grass. Yesterday it was nested down in my ground feeder. It's lost it's mate; probably to my new neighbours cat. Will it die? It's making me really sad.
Edit:
Hurrah I saw the pair of doves looking as happy and healthy as ever....so...I think I have a baby dove not a folorn lovesick one. It's all fluffy!

Re: Today's Wildlife Encounter
Found a heron with a very badly damaged wing today, tried to catch it and throw my jacket over it but it was having none of it and nearly got speared so went to the vet who gave me the number of RSPCA wildlife rescue who came out and put it to sleep so a bit of a sad day.

Re: Today's Wildlife Encounter
I got called out today to look at a swarm of honey bees livin' "wild" in a field ditch above the little village of Cononley near Skipton. Must admit I was a bit sceptical 'bout what I'd find. Well what a sight it was!

Re: Today's Wildlife Encounter
Just lately i have seen lots of Quayle running around, lots of Roadrunners, Rattlesnakes, many types of lizard, some very big Eagles. And yesterdays highlight was a couple of Coyote crossing the road in front of us. Still looking for Scorpions!

I can see it too. It looks like you were stood about 2 feet away from them. How zoomed in were you? and were they aggressive at all?
-
Re: Today's Wildlife Encounter
I can see it now!
I was about 10' away from the "hive". Zoomed-in; 300mm lense. Not aggressive one bit..even when the beekeeper sawed-off the branch they were attached to. I think they were desperate for some human help. They wouldn't have survived the winter. Hopefully the beekeeper will gain a few jars of honey from the swarm next summer. He's promised me a jar. Nice one!

That's one fast raptor! Must've been a long-legged Eagle if it could reach the pedals.

Re: Today's Wildlife Encounter
well I saw veritable plethera of wildlife at the RAB
I was only saying after the LDMT that seeing deer in the Lakes was unusual. well I saw 3 herds this weekend one with around 15 deer and one Stag.
Also found an unfortuanate freshly dead Badger( still had all it's soft bits entact) skirting low Raise. no obvious signs of being shot etc??
Did any else see the eagle over the campsite at Dusk?? I'm pretty certain it wasn't a buzzard. but for completeness I did see 2 seperate Buzzards on the drive home.

Re: Today's Wildlife Encounter
Disturbed a red kite on the ground with a bird caught in its claws. A magnificent sight as it struggled to get airborne.
-
Re: Today's Wildlife Encounter
My dog has had an encounter with a pile of Fox droppings! She was covered in it and needed hosing down. Does this count as an encounter with wildlife??
-
Re: Today's Wildlife Encounter
Another foxy encounter last night - very bold fox joined 10 of us for a track session, getting closer and closer as it got darker until it eventually tried to run off with a Lowe Alpine fleece.

Re: Today's Wildlife Encounter
a really wild experience today
Went for a run today and I was just dropping off Lost Lad when I spy a red grouse, (not the Grouse but a grouse), I expected it to fly off laughing like they do but no he stood his ground and after I passed him he seemed to be following me down the path so puzzled I stopped, He came really close about 1ft away! so I took his picture with my phone, then went to set off when he came really close, I'm thinking, wish I'd brought my sac with me, there's plenty of meat on this one when WHAM it went for me big style, It was a bit of shock so I backed off WHAM he went for me again, just like in a cock fight. so me being a big burley fell runner waved my hands and shouted to scare it away(he says in a deep manly voice):o. no such luck and it went for me a third time both pecking and trying to scratch, by this time I'm getting bored so I set continue on my run(definitely NOT running away):w00t: and the thing "chased" me for about 20m!! wings flapping close to the ground
I continued on my run, all 2.30 hours of it when on the descent to Strines Inn another Grouse flapped its wings, followed me briefly and clucked at me in the same manor.
Now has this happened to any one before, It's not nesting time so no chicks to protect, was I running provocatively or are the birds trying to get there own back for being shot out of the sky. Its all very Hitchcock......
Wharfee HELP!!!
-
Re: Today's Wildlife Encounter
That made me smile Ian. Can you imagine the indignity of posting on Today's Injury thread: Grouse peck marks? :D
Must admit, I've never heard of anyone being savaged by a grouse before

Re: Today's Wildlife Encounter
Three years ago there was a grouse near the fords on the pennine way up from laddow rocks. It used to follow you and be fairly sociable. It was there several weeks displaying this unusual behaviour. My running partner at the time thought that it was being fed by walkers.

I must admit that was my first thought when it followed me, it is on a popular path. but when it attcked me....
Perhaps it was defending it's turf, Is it mating season??

I've seen bats at dusk too, yesterday and today.
Are they an omen?
