Acceleration due to gravity varies with the sine of the angle of the slope - from my GPS data the average angle on the fell is about 18 degrees - sine is 0.3, so acceleration would be about 3 metres per second every second - you would be going jolly fast at the bottom of the slope if you were not braking!
The action of running downhill involves eccentric muscle contractions in your quads. These cause much more stiffness and Delayed Onset Muscle Soreness than concentric contractions. The cause is microscopic damage to the muscle cells. It's nothing to do with lactic acid or lactate build up. I don't suppose knowing the cause makes much difference as there's not a lot you can do to avoid it, other than running downhill more often! Recreating the eccentric contractions with weights may have some benefits.
I'm going tommorrow, but staying up to watch Beetlejuice tonight so might not have my a-game with me.
What a difference in 24 hrs!
Yesterday a few of us had a run(swim) around the cancelled Whinberry Naze course and it was a real eye opener....the power of Mother Nature is incredible.
Today up in Lakeland (which has had a terrible few weeks) it's gorgeous. The sky is clear, there's no wind and it's vest weather...very strange indeed.
Even though it's by far the mildest Wansfell race I've done, climate wise, it was still up there with the snowy ones for slip-sliding descending. The fell was sodden and keeping upright was a real challenge, in fact it was almost impossible...bum slides aplenty.
Before we reach the fell, we've the short road section to contend with first....blimey all them Christmas goodies made this harder than it should've been. I honestly thought I was gonna collapse at the cattle grid, note to self- don't be such a greedy sod next year!
Some great performances by some of the younger runners today but the master that is Rob Jebb came out on top...crikey, he can climb!
Thanks to all involved at Ambleside and fingers crossed that the weather starts to give you guys a break.
Cheers to all the Ambleside AC team for another good day. This is one race you shouldn't do on an easy training pattern, i reached the summit with bad jelly legs and was still waiting for them to wake up as i stumbled gingerly over the cattle grid. It's a descent that suits my style, but every year i'm off the big climbs through injury and not able to put in a good account, i had enough on just trying not to fall over or give up entirely. You need to be racing solidly on big hills in the lead-up to this really, it's worse that Bofra Sedbergh Gala for exposing any chink in your armour.
Happy birthday for tommorrow Tindersticks, and i think a shout for Kirsty Hall who came in 1st LV40 very soon after having her knee put back together after a skiing accident, stoic stuff there.
Phew my legs hurt a bit, looks like i was a whole 10mins slower than Kenny Stuart.
Anyone seen any results up for this? I know they tend to go to twitter or somewhere these days.
Is this race confirmed? It's on the Ambleside website, but not the FRA calendar. Cheers.
It is on, i've been told.
