A Hard Day on the Lakeland Fells by Andy Holden, on Flickr
Cheers Andy, I feel honoured having my picture taken by a tv star!!!
Received my certificate the other day. Thanks a lot to whoever posted it (maybe Richard) and Joss for signing it.
Great to receive.
Any idea when entries open for this years race? I'm sure I read somewhere before that its this month sometime, just not sure when.
Apologies for last year's race details left on website. Now corrected. Entries are open, no champs this year so expecting normal field. Please can I have volunteers who can man up checkpoints or help on the ground? I am short-handed this year for checkpoints on Pillar, Gable & Lingmell Nose. On terra firma for car parking & manual stop watch plus the usual odds & sods jobs like collecting tallies at the Greendale Road crossing & finish.
Cheers for now, Richard
Quick question re Wasdale training and the race itself.
I'm coming off a decent spring running Coledale, Waltz and Butteremere with some top 20 finishes so the legs have had a solid working over, haha
How many and what distance are peoples long runs for Wasdale? I've done a good few marathons in the past but haven't run a long long lakes race yet (Langdale the longest so far) I've got a couple 16s, an 18, a 19 bagged with regular midweek runs around the 10-13m region so far. Planning on a couple more 18-20s.
Also how much fuel/water do people carry too? I'm looking at the inov8 3L waist bag with 5ooml bottle. I guess a fistful of gels too and couple mini mars bars thrown in, lol
Any tips greatly appreciated :-)
Personally I've been doing quite a few long races this year (Ennerdale(ish), Jura, TWA) and so that's been my preparation. Sounds like you've got the speed and your training runs sound long enough. The ascent is the killer though; what kind of ascent have you been packing in to those 16-19 miles? I think get a few days with 7000ft+ of ascent isn't a bad idea.
How much water and what bag size really depends on the weather. If it was really good weather I might consider taking a 3L bag, but normally it'd be a 6L bumbag or in bad weather a 15L rucksack with a spare layer or two. If it's not too hot then I'd take 500ml of water but if it's scorching then I'd probably take 1L. Other people will tell you different things though, it's really a personal preference (some people can go back further on much less water!).
Food-wise, a fistful of gels and a couple of mini Mars bars sounds good. I'll probably take two mini Mars bars and 10-15 jelly babies.
Hope that helps!
Cheers for the advice Sam. Sadly where I am it isn't very hilly at all so the long runs are pretty much on the flat, however I do tend to do a few miles over some "hills" at the back end of a long run. The proper steep training I've only really done in lakes races this spring as well as the odd trip to lakes with my Dad this spring where I've gone off on a long training run.
As a result I do blocks of leg conditioning training in the week, so 40 min hills in the gym alternating in 10 min blocks between hard resistance seated on a bike and jogging on the highest incline on the treadmill. That and use of lots of long reps up steps within a normal run. It's not ideal but it's the best I can do really.
I'll just have to bare the lack of ascent training in mind when I set off and keep the pace sensible. Im definitely better suited to longer stuff but I'm fully aware I'm going to suffer in this whatever training I get in, haha
Hope this helps.
Regarding long runs, I don't think you need to do anything beyond 18. If it's flatter where you are then the pace will probably be much faster, so the fitness you get will be spread out over a longer time at a slower pace on the day (that's my theory and I'm clinging to it!). Definitely pace yourself. Try to get to Greendale at least in decent shape!
Regarding water, Wasdale has lots of water on the route (streams) so there's plenty of opportunities to re-fill a 500ml bottle.
I'm not saying that's advice to win it, I'm afraid, but I hope it helps you get round.
Don't start racing until Pillar!! Sounds a bit daft but seriously don't. A nice easy pace till there then if you feel ok you will pass loads who have set off too fast. There is plenty of water on route if you don't mind drinking from becks, so don't worry about that. Buttermere HS runs it close but its still the hardest race in the calendar. Just gutted I can't do it this year. Have fun.
Great thanks for the tips folks
Gonna race it for the first time 6l rucksack plenty of gels ,I know there's plenty of water on route it's gonna be tough
Anyone know why Wharfeego's excellent Wasdale video is now unavailable on YouTube or more importantly if it's available to watch anywhere...need some inspiration!
That was a great video!
If anyone is in/around Ambleside between now and race day, please could I hand over the men's trophy. It weighs half a tonne (you can't cycle with it), is an awesome trophy (worth picking up just to have a good look at it) and, most importantly, needs returning to Richard for race day. If you could email me, that'd be awesome. Ta.
I'm enjoying my mini taper for this. Not that I've battered the mileage but it's still good to be resting the legs a bit. Since Buttermere Sailbeck 2x16s a 17, 18, 19 & 20, that'll have to do. Giving the legs one last working over on the rower and spin bike hills today and an 8-10m tomorrow and that's me. Foolishly started looking at weather forecasts, haha
Everybody set for Saturday then ? I'll be on Lingmell nose offering encouragement / counselling to guide you into the finishing field :) so do say Hi.
Looking forward to coming up to Wasdale on Saturday, sadly due to injury I wont be starting the race but I'll be up on some mountain side cheering you amazing athletes on, have a good 'un guys 'n gals.
Ready as I'll ever be, haha
What do people make of the forecast? Seems like patchy rain/ cloud coming in during the afternoon. Just hope the clag isn't right down all the way round the route. Atleast it's not going to be baking hot!
Yeah you never can tell really. The number of times me and my Dad have gone walking in the lakes and a front has taken longer than expected to come through or nice versa. Looks like the persistent heavy rain won't be til 5/6ish or later but I wouldn't be surprised if it's very cloudy summits/showers last 3rd of race. Very hard to predict though, just wait and see.
Been on weatherline forecast not good, could be a tough day ,take care everyone
We needn't of worried about the weather, it was fine. A little warm perhaps but nothing like last year and the cloud was above the summits, apart from scafell pike for the 5.30hr and beyond finishers, who were also treated to a fine cooling rain. Well done race winner Simon Harding and run of day must be Jasmin Paris who was 1st lady but also 3rd overall. Many thanks to all involved and a special mention for the catering ladies, they're up for a laugh and they make bloody beltin butties, thank you ladies.
Every time I do Wasdale and the 2.30hr drive home, I climb out of the car and do the Wasdale walk, which basically looks like I've shit myself....for the record, I haven't.
First Wasdale loved it, hated it and then loved it again despite it ruining my feet a bit. Awesome day out on the hills today, I seem to have gotten quite sunburnt. Agree with Tindersticks about it being just a touch too warm, I think it was lack of wind. I think Jasmin was just off the record (less than a minute) from what she was saying at the finish but it was a great effort, when she went through Greendale Joss seemed surprised as she was in 2nd overall then!
Big thanks to all at cfra for all their organisation, marshalling and catering. A particular thanks to the group of little ones at styhead tarn with their goodies and cheery shouts of encouragement-much appreciated at that point in the race. The route beat me up today-I'll have it next year!
Enjoyed watching the race today, well the bits I saw, but considering there was not much sun it was blooming boiling going up Scaffell Pike, and I was only walking. Hats off to all who took part, I really enjoyed chilling out in the finish field watching the everyone coming in, top respect to you all, also the ladies in the food tent 10 out of 10. Great to meet the legend that is Joss Naylor, even got him to sign his book for me, top man!
Well done everyone yesterday.
In short a tough, tough day on the fells for me yesterday. I haven't suffered like that in a race for a long time, maybe London marathon 2007 in the heat when I was under the weather. I knew it was going to be hard but having gone off fairly sensibly I just started to feel extremely heavy legged and tired after Seatallan. On the descent off Pillar I pretty much knew I was for it and abandoned expectations of finish place/time. Took on plenty of water and fluid but felt a bit light headed and just generally not great. Still I was glad to grit my teeth, grind it out and come in in 5.30. Was really losing my legs coming off Sca Fell pike, so had to be careful on the final descent.
Bastard hard race combined with what I felt like was "one of those days", just extremely tired from the off. No complaints though and great to be part of an amazing event. Great that the weather held off for those epic views and Joss Naylor handing out drinks. Definitely be back to give this another crack again sometime.
Well done everyone again, an epic day on the fells.....a true brute of race. Awesome stuff.
Really pleased to have been one of the women to get round this tough race. There weren't many of us! Happy with 5:36 as a first timer. Well done to everyone involved. Here is a link to some photos. http://www.granddayoutphotography.co...fell-race-2014
Really enjoyed yesterday's race (most of it anyway). A good improvement on my time from my first attempt a couple of years ago. Helped that the cloud was above the summits until Scafell Pike but was a little bit tricky crossing the boulders on the approach as the rain had started by the time I got there and my legs were a tad wobbly by this stage.
Thanks to all involved. Great tea and butties at the end too.
What a brilliant race! My first time around it and it is every bit as tough as it's made out to be. I took it nice and steady and consequently I thoroughly enjoyed it and finished feeling pretty strong, in 5 hours 35 minutes. It's a bit of an odd route when you look at it on the map but it makes for brilliant racing; it gets tougher and tougher the further around it you get! Amazing run by Jasmin, impressive stuff.
Thanks to everyone involved, and especially to whoever's idea it was to have a tub of fresh pineapple chunks at the end, perfect post-race food!
I think I was chatting to you at the end? I was the guy that passed you and Huw from Bowland going up Scafell Pike.Quote:
