Full Tour of Pendle 2010
I last did this in 2006 and remember getting very wet and it having 3 pretty big climbs in the second half. Have planned to do it last 2 years but always seem to get some kind of horrendous cold the week before. BUT this year I've got a cold now so that gives me 3 whole weeks to recover! Looking forward to it. Was vaguely wondering about going for the early start option mentioned on the CLEM website? Anyone else got any thoughts on that? One upside I suppose is you'll get overtaken by the leaders at some point:D
Get your entrance fees in to avoid a £10 increase on the day and no guaranteed entry!!

Re: Full Tour of Pendle 2010
Normal start for me Tractorboy ! Looking forward to this one.

Re: Full Tour of Pendle 2010
Are there water points on the race, or is it self-sufficiency all the way?
-
Re: Full Tour of Pendle 2010
Self-sufficiency 3rock.
Water at Ashendean Clough seems clean enough. I've drunk from here with no ill effects.
Stream at the bottom of Geronimo is brackish so I've steered clear.

Re: Full Tour of Pendle 2010
Right I'm in for the FTOP. I blame AndyA from the 3 Peaks thread for this.
So what have I let myself in for ?
Toughest I've done so far is the Hope Moors and Tors 20. FTOP I think has another 1000 ft climbing but is 3 or 4 miles shorter. Not sure if that makes it harder or not ?

Re: Full Tour of Pendle 2010

And i take full credit for that!!
Don't worry, you'll have a good race. Don't get sucked into the charge up the first tarmac section; just start near the back and settle into your pace. FTOP has several unrunnable ascents (well, for most of us anyway) especially in the second half which you will need to pace for so just take it steady.
There are no water stops but it's not a race that you need to carry water for. Ogden Clough (at CP4) is fine to drink, although you shouldn't need anything then, so is Ashendean Clough (just after CP5) and Mearley Clough (CP7). There is a spring on the ascent from CP9, complete with metal lid and pewter mug (no, seriously!) but you have to know where it is!!
The running will be wet and peaty, it always is; wear your grippiest fell shoes.
Post Race; the savvy locals will be cooling off and washing the mud off their shoes by standing in the stream at Barley; don't forget to join us!

Thanks Andy. I'll take your advice on not charging to quick at the start. I've gone off too quick at the Hope Moors and Windgather and suffered for it later. Like the look of the route, don't mind the unrunnable ascents, I tend to make up a bit of time on those and lose it on the descents.
I tend to carry an energy drink but I'll top up with water at the points you suggest.
See you in the stream at the end.

Re: Full Tour of Pendle 2010
Looking forward to this one. Don't know why, though.
-
Re: Full Tour of Pendle 2010
I only asked about confirmation as I've heard of cheques going missing in the post & people turning up & not being able to race.

Jez, I sent my form off on 20th October and the cheque only got cashed yesterday so I wouldn't worry mate. I had been wondering the same thing.
-
Re: Full Tour of Pendle 2010
Cheers mate, appreciate that.

Re: Full Tour of Pendle 2010
Anyone got a decent map of the race ?
Have seen the one of the race website but thats not particularly good.

I've got the Harvey race map. Its worryingly barren! Will probably double up with a look at the OS version. Also hoping to make Andy's second half recce but its not looking hopeful at the moment...

Will, I'll be really interested on your thoughts of the route and the unrunnable ascents after you've finished :D

A useful bit of advice - if you're not going steeply uphill or downhill you are probaly off course. ;-)

Sounds a hoot! Everything I've read and heard has been along those lines, yet I'm really looking forward to getting stuck in on the 13th. I'm sure that will have all changed around about CP4...

HA HA I'll let you know Stolly. Probably on the Monday, Sunday I'll be too stiff to log on :)
I quite enjoy slogging up the unrunnable ascents. Its the descents I'm not so good on so that Geronimo one looks a bit of a worry.

Just borrow a marshalls bib, having watched the above the bib's optional:D
Can be done in Walsh's as well as X-Talons.

Re: Full Tour of Pendle 2010
The part that's funniest - or, to be more intellectual, most evocative of the Human Condition - is the guy who comes down Geronimo perfectly, and then falls over trying to get through the gate.

Maybe he forgot to fall and just remembered going through the gate and didn't want to dissapoint anyone?
-
Re: Full Tour of Pendle 2010
The guy doing the flawless bum slide at 1:10 is none other than Neil "Legend" Worswick, a veteran of this race (now in age as well as reputation!)

Re: Full Tour of Pendle 2010
I was out this afternoon, trying to get an idea of the route. Didn't get on too well - as you've said on here, the Harvey map lacks detail, so I found it difficult to work out where I was. I've got a South Pennines OL21 map, but that only has half of the hill. Which OS map has all of it?
-
Re: Full Tour of Pendle 2010
I'm glad I'm not the only one ! I found nowt ont net ! I'll just try & follow Brotherton Lad !

Re: Full Tour of Pendle 2010
