Re: Today's Wildlife Encounter
As i was running to work this morning a fox came tearing round the corner and nearly ran into me, turned tail and skidded off over a wall, up close and personal with the culprit who leaves the stuff that my mutt rolls in, guilt was written all over it's face, cheers Basil:rolleyes:

No, there was one outside the tent both nights, is was scratching about and even left muddy prints on side of the tent. We left tent door open and went out a couple of times with the torch in middle of the night (it was making Possum noises about us) but couldn't catch it. Saw them a couple of years ago in a garden every night. Missus very pleased to see the Echidna, went up to it and took some photos.

Re: Today's Wildlife Encounter
My good karma banked saving that tawny owl a few months back nearly wiped out today when a barn owl narrowly avoided getting thumped by my windscreen this morning. Luckily it missed, but oh so close...

Re: Today's Wildlife Encounter
Two otters hunting in Lake Windermere in the rain. A first for me :D

Re: Today's Wildlife Encounter
Lapwings, a buzzard, 3 herons, canada geese, a reed bunting and what was probably a peregrine. Not a bad haul considering I've been grouting the floor all morning and haven't left the house.

Re: Today's Wildlife Encounter
A heron flew over my car near Harewood House yesterday evening carrying nesting material. The most red kites I've seen on the way past too. Difficult to count whilst driving but must have been 20+ at least

I saw a Massive Fat Hamster in a little carry box today being carted about by a student, does that count as an encounter? (Todays student possibly?)

I wouldn't rule it out! Although a whole student in one go is quite a big meal for a hamster ;)

Re: Today's Wildlife Encounter
Had a large owl swooping around my head a couple of times on my hill rep session last night (Sheffield Porter Valley area - in the car park next to the NHS building in Fulwood for any locals). Couldn't identify it for repeated tentative ducking out of the way, but later heard Tawny Owl calls in the same spot. Don't think it was attacking, just interested in my new headtorch...

Does waking up next to the missus count???

A flock of perhaps 20 waxwings right in the centre of Leeds this morning. Second time I've seen some this winter (last lot weren't far from home) but I've still not had a proper look at any

Re: Today's Wildlife Encounter
I saw a lovely roe buck on my run today. It stopped to have a good look at me before bounding off into the woods. Really beautiful.
Loads of squirrels, oystercatchers, curlew, lapwings, a woodpecker and some interesting looking geese that I haven't dentified yet.

saw 3 bumble bees today The first of the year!
1 stoat/weasel (Dead) 6 pure white hares, a vole and a flock of startled birds(torch dead by this time) so all I could say is they were small!
-
Re: Today's Wildlife Encounter
I'm very envious of the white hares and have a fondness for bumblebees. Shame about the stoat/weasel though.

Not exactly 'wildlife'...more like 'life in a wild place'. Last Sunday's Kendal Winter League Cautley race. Cautley Crag and Spout in the background.

Re: Today's Wildlife Encounter
Great spotted woodpecker seen in Breary marsh this morning at about 6:30. Heard it tapping away from quite a distance and started looking for it when it sounded close. Stood under the tree where it was and watched it for a few minutes, it was a belter. Sun was in my eyes a bit so couldn't see it super clear but it was only around 10 feet away and I could see the red colouring on it's rump.
