Swallow? I've spotted an odd Swallow very early in April in previous years but 24th March?

was on the half on sunday and a runner in front of me nearly got run over by a startled deer which then doubled back and was followed by another five. lovely healthy looking deer too.
Oh yes, and I found a very cosy little mouse nest in my ball of string up at the allotment. That will explain who ate all my apples and just left little shreds of red skin!
Roe deer spotted on club run tonight down Woodland Drive in between Horsforth and Apperley Bridge. Nice
plenty of chiff chaffs round here but no house martins yet. got a woodpecker knocking hell out of my scots pine!
Just seen a barn owl hunting near Mickley. There seems to be a fair few around.
Very handsome red squirrel this afternoon at the north edge of Buttermere. That's a sight to cheer up a cold windy day!
Female Roe Deer in the woodland at the side of the A59 near Blubberhouses, plenty of pheasants around too
A 'herd' of seven red deer in the field behind the house on my evening jaunt. Not seen them out in the open before, usually just glimpses when out on the trails of Grizedale. Very good views, very curious
Startled a flock of geese today on Bingley moor, scared the bloody life out of me. They kept flying back over my head honking at me as well.
pretty sure I saw a snipe today, lots of Hares, curlews, lapwings.
Sparrow Hawk took a starling on our back garden at Penistone. Just a flurry of feathers and then it was away with its lunch.
Two wildlife encounters this weekend. The first was two baby rabbits trying to avoid being seen after my dog dug down to them in the garden. I felt a bit sorry for them, but they were just next to the vegetable patch. Max was very restrained once we'd found them.
And finally, our first two swallows. :)
Oooh I'm jealous of the swallows. I got buzzed by some greylags on my river run and raced by two wee lambs! Everything is so gorgeous at the moment. Blackthorn blossom is out, celandines, violets, anemones, wild garlic...I love spring!!!
Not current, but forgot to post that I saw a kingfisher at the end of last year whilst running at Worthington Lakes near Wigan. Surprisingly 'dull' whilst sitting in the shade, but as soon as it took flight the colours were incredible.
Kingfishers are wonderful, their iridescence always amazes me.
I saw a little hedgehog tonight. It was wandering across the road and I had to brake hard not to squash it. Luckily I was able to wait for it to recover itself and potter off into the hedgerow. A small vole shot out as well and I managed to miss that too. Am not enjoying toad slalom, those amorous amphibians make driving to my friend's house very tricky. Sometimes I have to get out and carry a dozen or so to the side of the road so I can get through.
Yorkshire: One very proud Mallard and her 14 tiny new ducklings (4 yellow, the rest standard brown with yellow patches). She brought them almost to my feet. :closed:
Lakes: Meadow Pippit, Wheatear, Skylark; they're back at last.
Grey Seals at the bottom of the road, waiting for the tide to go out for a lounge on the sand banks!
Flushed a green woodpecker today. God knows how it got in the toilet in the first place...
Lateral thinking wildlife encounter...
Great run until one of my dogs rolled around in Fox shit (that is the word)... cant believe how much it stinks!
Saw a roe deer and a hare on this evening's run at exactly the same place that I saw them last time. Also curlews, sandmartins, bats and the primroses are out along the banks for the Ure.
On a similar yukky note, my cat had not only left the guts of a mouse (or vole - it's hard to tell) on the kitchen floor this morning, he had then sicked it all up on the windowsill and on our cactus. Cleaning cat sick off a cactus is not an easy job.
Harry's best 'rolled in a dead thing' is a mole I'm afraid. But he's got to start somewhere.....
Driving over the tops tonight I saw a couple of hares who both tried to race me down the lane and an owl flying off a post across the front of the car - no idea what kind but quite small
bringing the thread back on track, loads of hares on an early morning wander, now changing slowly to brown, not really a run as my calf is still very tight. Curlews, an owl, a little lizzard and loads of grouse
ha.. my Edale Skyline pre-race preparation involved cleaning up pools of dog sick, urine and runny sh*t off the kitchen floor....all mixed together in some places.... not good, when all I wanted to do was eat something!!! still not sure of the best/most clinical way to "pick-up" doggy diarrhoea.... suggestions please!!!!
on a different note... seeing lots of kamikaze pheasants in the Derbyshire fields/roads at the mo... not managed to hit one yet, but getting closer. Also seen a couple of MASSIVE birds of prey, perched on fence posts.. one near Winster and one near Grantham. I'd say they were buzzards, but they looked bigger...
You need other pets that will eat it. Some dogs do this well with horse poo! My dog has cleaned up after 'accidents' made by the kids when they were very little. I think the key thing you have to not be there to watch - I don't know what's worse, cleaning it up or the thought of your mans-best-friend eating it.
hmmmm, yes, but they don't eat their own, do they....
on the smell post earlier (lowering tone again).... my dogs used to roll in all sorts when younger... but nothing beats the smell of a rotting fox cub head paraded through the house with pride by one of my dogs. Presumably must have been killed/eaten by another fox and dumped in the garden....
Over the last week or so, my labrador has gradually eaten his way through a dead pheasant that he keeps going back to on our regular walk. He's down to crunchy wing bones now, and liberal amounts of sheep shit as some kind of condiment I presume.
My collie is above such things, and will only eat cheese when we're out.
Swallow in the conservatory today - Mrs WH rescued it before the dogs had a snack!
